vet_ffffffthumbnailWilliam “Bill” Adams Jellison passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland at the age of 82. He was born on August 12, 1934 in Ellsworth, Kansas to the late Arthur Asa and Alice Juanita (Bair) Jellison. After graduating high school in Wilson, Kansas, he attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence for two years before joining the United States Army from 1956-59. Following his tour of duty he returned to the university from 1959-61 majoring in Electrical Engineering. From 1973-75 he took courses in computer programming languages, operating systems and computer mathematics at Penn Valley College. On December 3, 1977 he married Eileen Woodmark in Kansas City, Missouri.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Bill began his career as an airborne combat reconnaissance photographer in the Army while serving a tour of duty in Korea. After being honorably discharged, he applied his photographic knowledge to laboratory instrumentation throughout his career. These included: industrial and high-speed motion picture photography, Midwest Research, Inc. Kansas City, MO; design and instrumentation of small computer systems in laser optics projects, DuPont Experimental Station, Wilmington, DE; and engineering laser chemical vapor deposition (CVD) systems, Containerless Research, Inc. (CRI), Evanston, IL.

Bill also partnered with John Brannigan Associates in Overland Park, KS, on a part time basis, to produce commercial and industrial films. He was the co-founder, director and past President of Computer Network of Kansas City, as well as co-founding the Forth Interest Group of Kansas City and the Macintosh Developers Group of Kansas City. IN addition, he founded a company known as Cutter Charts, in which he designed and created software applications to collect sea surface temperature data from NASA satellites. He then translated and converted the data to a temperature map of the sea surface. He planned to sell these maps to sport fishermen who use sea surface temperatures to locate specific types of game fish.

Bill designed and built a growth chamber for manufacturing high-temperature ceramic fibers at CRI. The chamber was designed with a growth tip to which gasses were fed and heated by laser. These superheated gasses formed ceramic fibers. Because there was no material that could withstand the extreme heat of the laser, the growing fibers were held in place with the use of sound waves. The design included a computer interface, allowing scientists to control the growth rate via a computer keyboard, thus providing an intuitive, simple interface for managing fiber growth. In addition, he created a video system to monitor and record the process.

Bill was an avid motorcyclist and boater. Upon his retirement from CRI, he rode his BMW from Chicago to Annapolis. In addition, he loved spending time on his boat, a pocket cruiser, named “Gunker.” He took the name from Chesapeake Bay boaters’ practice of “gunk holing,” which is simply finding a quiet anchorage in a peaceful cove. Recently, he had been working with Arduino and Raspberry Pi microcomputers, creating applications to monitor his boat. Indeed, he spent many delightful days taking motorcycle trips on the beautiful country roads, or cruising the rivers and bays of the Chesapeake, in Maryland.

Bill is survived by his wife Eileen W. Jellison of the home in Edgewater, MD; stepsons Mark Olson and Eunice Hansen of Woodbury, MN, Mike Olson and Teresa of Berkeley, CA, Matthew Olson and Sandra of Galesville, MD, Martin Olson and Sandy of Tonganoxie, KS and Mitchell Olson of Mission, KS; siblings Charles R. Jellison of Yelm, WA, Ken Jellison and Sue Walenga of Paradise Valley, AZ, John Jellison and Jane of Omaha, NE, and Martha ( Jellison ) Hole and Rollin of Wichita, KS; 9 grandchildren; and 2 step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur Asa and Alice Juanita Jellison, and grandson Connor William Olson.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church in Wilson, KS. Burial will follow in the Wilson City Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
