Obituaries – December 14, 2016

David T. Smith, 75, Delphos, died Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at the Ottawa County Health Center, Minneapolis. Dave was born November 12, 1941 in Strong City to George Thomas and Genevieve Marie (Hasker) Smith. At a young age, George was killed and Dave’s step-father, Leo Max Lubbers, stepped in and became Dave’s father.
Dave was a graduate of Cheney High School. He and Catherine Garst were united in marriage on May 29, 1970. Dave worked as a welder for Cessna and ElDorado National. He was also a farmer and rancher. Dave enjoyed hunting, fishing, and sports, but his greatest passion was his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father; and brothers, John and Dan Lubbers.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Catherine Smith of the home; daughter Tami Allen and husband Scott of Minneapolis; step-children Greg Brown and wife Susan of Clarinda, IA, Glen Brown and wife Jackie of Germany, and Dixie Dooley and husband Don of Salina; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, December 17 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Minneapolis. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery, Delphos. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday at Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Minneapolis High School Athletic Department and may be left in care of Wilson Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 166, Minneapolis, KS 67467.

Eunice Marie Herrs, 61, of Salina, and formerly of Norton, passed away Dec. 12, 2016 at her home. She was born

Sept. 1, 1955 in Washington, Kan., the daughter of Verlin and Arlene (Scheele) Wiechmann.

She was baptized Sept. 11, 1955 by Rev. Clifford Larson at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Barnes, Kan. She was confirmed March 30, 1969 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Barnes, Kan., by Rev. A.C. Leimer.

Eunice attended elementary school in Barnes and Linn. She graduated from Linn High School in 1973. After attending Brown Mackie College in Salina for one year, she was a professional secretary for an insurance agency in Linn, Kan.

On Aug. 9, 1975, she was united in marriage with Steven Allen Herrs, at St. Peter Lutheran Church Barnes, Kan., by Rev. Harlan Meier.

For the next two years, Steve and Eunice made their home in Manhattan, Kan, where she worked as a secretary on-campus at Kansas State University.

In 1977 the couple moved to Concordia, Kan, where Eunice established her career as a dental assistant.

The couple moved to Norton, Kan, in 1978 where they made their home for the next 38 years. During that time Eunice worked as a junior high school secretary, dental assistant, and day care provider.

Eunice and Steve were blessed with two children; Dustin Allen and Sheena Lynn.

While in Norton, Eunice was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and LWML.

This past September, the couple moved to their current home in Salina to be near family. Eunice was a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church, Salina. She was an avid flower gardener and had a passion and gift for decorating her home and garden to the delight of all. She loved entertaining and will always be remembered for hosting her traditional Easter weekend family gatherings and K-State tailgating festivities.

Eunice is survived by: her husband, Steven Herrs, of the home; son, Dustin Herrs (Jessa) of Salina; daughter, Sheena Lobmeyer (Nicholas) of Hays; grandsons, Paxton and Elijah Herrs; sisters, Anita Ohlde (Ronald) of Palmer, and Beverly Winter (Scott) of Manhattan; brothers-in-law, Harvey Herrs of Linn, DeWayne Herrs (Roberta) of McPherson, and Rodney Herrs (Karen) of Tonganoxie; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; brother, Ronald Lee Wiechmann; brother-in-law, Ralph Herrs; and sister-in-law, LaDean Herrs.

Friends may call noon-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina where the family will receive friends from 5-7 that evening.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday Dec. 15, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Salina. Burial will be at approximately 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon in the St. Peter Lutheran Church Cemetery, near Barnes.

Memorials are suggested to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Norton, Kan.

Funeral services for Joan F. Johnson, age 88, of Abilene will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 19, 2016 at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene with Pastor Shane Britt officiating. Mrs. Johnson passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at the Village Manor in Abilene.
Joan was born March 8, 1928 in Pawnee City, Nebraska the daughter of John and Ethel (Kier) Williamson. She graduated from high school in Pawnee City and received her Normal Teaching Certificate. Joan taught in a one room school for one year and then attended Sterling College graduating with a bachelor’s degree in teaching.
When Joan started teaching in 1951 in Abilene, she taught kindergarten and first grade at McKinley, Lincoln, and Kennedy Schools for over 40 years retiring in 1993.
While teaching Joan met and married Darrell D. Johnson on March 28, 1928 in Pawnee City, Nebraska. Joan was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church and enjoyed sewing, traveling, spending time with friends and especially her family.
Joan is survived by her sons Jeff Johnson and his wife Sandy of Abilene, Brad Johnson and his wife Kim of San Diego, California; three grandchildren Michelle Ringer and her husband Kolt, Matt Johnson and his wife Jaci, and Minh Johnson; and two great grandchildren Jessa and Weston Ringer. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Darrell on September 28, 2004, brothers David and John Williamson, and her parents.
Joan’s final resting place will be in the Abilene Cemetery. Her family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Joan’s memory to the Abilene School System and may be sent in care of the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW 3rd, Abilene, Kansas 67410.

Fern M. Waters, age 74, rural Concordia resident, entered into rest on December 14, 2016 at the Cloud County Health Center. She was born on July 13, 1942 in Concordia, KS to Levi and Lena (Donnelly) Doyen.
Fern graduated from Clyde High School in 1960. She married Charles Keith Waters on September 22, 1962 in Concordia, KS. Fern was a Lab Technician for many years and retired from Cloud County Health Center in 2014. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Concordia, American Legion Post #76 Auxiliary, a past member of the Moose Lodge #1428 and the Elks Club. Fern loved bowling, Bunco and attending the monthly women’s club.

She is survived by 2 sons, Jeff Waters (Karla), Salina, KS & Jim Waters (Jeannie), Concordia; daughter, Jennifer Swihart (Butch), Clay Center, KS; brother, Larry Doyen, Salina, KS; 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Keith Waters; parents; sister, Ruth Ann Jones and infant son, Bradley.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 17, 2016 at the Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home in Concordia with Rev. Barry Dundas officiating. Burial will follow in the Rice Cemetery, Rice, Kansas.
Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Friday, December 16, 2016. Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00p.m all at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home.
Memorial Contributions may be given to Cloud County Health Center c/o Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home.

Dennis Dale McKale, 76 years died December 12, 2016 at in , KS. He was born on June 3, 1940 in Clay Center, KS, the son of Dale and Nadine (Faulkner) McKale. Dennis was raised in the Longford Community and graduated from Longford High School in 1958. He married Diane Cooney on July 25, 1960. Dennis was a farmer and a rural mail carrier from 1965 until his retirement in 2002. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Longford, Masonic Lodge, ISIS Shrine and former School Board member. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Frederick J. “Fritz” Mog, 87, passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2016 in Ellsworth. He was born March 1, 1929 in Ellsworth County to Frederick F. and Elizabeth B. Mog.

A lifetime resident of the Wilson area, Fritz was a farmer and stockman and member of the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Ellsworth. He was a past board member of the Noble Township, the co-op, and the credit union. He was also a past commander of the American Legion Post 200 of Holyrood and member of the Knights of Columbus. Fritz proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He married Betty Lou Wanek in Wilson on September 12, 1950. She preceded him in death in 2012. He was also preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Shay Mog; brother, John; and sisters, Hubertine, Clare, Suzanne, Betty Rae, and Loyola.

Fritz is survived by daughters, Sandra Branda of Salina, Kathleene Carreon (Hank) of Wilson, and Brenda Mog of Ellsworth; son, Craig Mog (Deb) of Ellsworth; twin brother, Francis Mog of Round Hill, VA; seven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Visitation: 1-7 p.m., Thursday, December 15, 2016 at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. A rosary will follow at 7:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 16, 2016 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church with burial following in the Wilson Catholic Cemetery.
