Melvin Lyle Wienck,
 86, passed away peacefully at Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice in Manhattan, Kansas on December 14, 2017.

He was born in rural Greenleaf, Kansas on June 28, 1931 to Fred and Olga (Stigge) Wienck. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Barnes, KS. He attended Shaw School. He served in the US Marine Corps from 1951 to 1953. On April 12, 1952 he married Frances Worthington in Oceanside, California while he was in the Marine Corps.

He was predeceased by his parents, a brother Howard Wienck, a sister, Vivian Vickerman, and two grandsons, Joel Bickel and Jeremiah Bickel.

He is survived by Frances, his wife of 65 years, two brothers, Donald (Lorna) Wienck, of Hanover, and Ivan (Irene) Wienck, of Blue Rapids, and six children; Susan (Ron) Graham, of Council Grove; Linda (Tim) Poell, of Manhattan; Dennis (Lynn) Wienck, of Duncan, Oklahoma; Carol (Doug) Bickel, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; David (Tonja) Wienck, of Austin, Texas; and Sharon (Bradley) Goering, of Seneca, eleven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Melvin was a life member and current Vice President of the Washington County Historical Society, a life member of the Marine Corps League and a charter member of the Desert Storm Detachment of the Marine Corps League, a member of John Doerr Post 145 of the American Legion in Barnes and former Lincoln Township board trustee. In addition he served his community as a board member of the Barnes Coop Oil Association and the Barnes Coop Elevator Association.

In 2009 Melvin’s farm was recognized as a Farm Bureau Century farm. His grandfather John Wienck, Jr. was the original owner of the farm. In 2006 he and Frances were recognized as Soil Conservation Award winners for their work in conserving the land.

Viewing is from noon to 8:00 pm, Sunday, at Terry-Christie Funeral Home in Waterville.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Terry-Christie Funeral Home in Waterville, on December 18, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating. Kim Oatney is the organist and will sing “Rock of Ages” and “How Great Thou Art”. Casket Bearers are Travis Hynek, Jacob Hynek, Gary Wienck, Ryan Wieters, Donald Honig and Paul Cassity. Burial is at the Maplewood Cemetery west of Barnes. Military honors will be provided by a detail from the United States Marine Corps and John Doerr Post 145 of the American Legion in Barnes.

Memorials are suggested to either, Good Shepherd Hospice House or the Washington County Historical Society, and may be sent in care of the funeral home at PO Box 61, Waterville, Kansas 66548.
