Lawrence Randall “Randy” Lathan, Lawrence Randall “Randy” Lathan was born July 3, 1951, to Ralph and Delsie Lathan, in Salina, and passed away surrounded by family Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013.
Randy met Donna McLane in the fall of 1970, and they married March 9, 1979, in Salina. They made their home in Salina, welcoming two children, Lyle in 1979, and Laura in 1982.
Randy was a kind soul setting his own path even when it wasn’t always easy to walk.
Randy made his living by his hands doing carpentry and construction. He never knew a stranger, and his kindness to help his fellow man was unparalleled. It was said “you can’t go wrong with a man who animals and children were drawn to,” and that was definitely him.
He raised several children outside of his two. He raised many nieces and nephews, but his greatest joy came when Harper J. made him a grandpa and she gained her “giant.”
He is survived by his wife, Donna McLane Lathan; mother-in-law, Julie McLane; son, Lyle and wife Carolyn; and granddaughter, Harper, all of Salina; daughter, Laura Lathan Crawford and husband Matthew Crawford, of Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters, several nieces, nephews and friends.
The family would like to thank Nurse Holly, who showed great compassion and care during his final day.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 14, 2013, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina. Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, at Grace Baptist Fellowship. Burial will follow in Gypsum Hill Cemetery.

He attended high school in Killeen, Texas. When he was 19, Don joined the Marines and then left to fight in the Vietnam War. He did two tours in Vietnam. His father also served in the war. He was a leader and returned to the U.S. as a corporal and as one of that war’s walking casualties.
The war did not steal all of Don’s spirit, and he was a gifted man with many abilities and talents. Everything he did was with enthusiasm, if not extreme gusto. He worked in construction and managed a furniture store. He made and restored beautiful furniture. He worked briefly in law enforcement.

After daily chemo and radiation, the tumor was gone but soon it returned and spread. He fought his cancer as long as possible, but on Dec. 6, his birthday, his doctor told him he could have weeks. He was able to make it through one more holiday with his family.
Don was preceded in death by his father, Joseph; daughter, Mary; and a former wife, JoAnna.
He is survived by his current wife, Lydia Haist Shehan, of Bennington; mother, Josephine Shehan, of Salina; four sisters, Terri Usher, of Palamo, Texas, Mary Kay Cryan, of Chicago, JoAnn Donelan, of Staten Island, N.Y., and Vickie Shehan, of California; one daughter, Amy Marie Shehan, one son, Anthony Rex Shehan, and a former wife, Patty Hill, all of Manhattan; two residing stepsons, Robert and Ed Perez; one grandson, Sebastian, and one great-granddaughter, Kylie, both of Manhattan; former wife, Missy Shehan, of Bennington; several close friends; and his 22 cats, Lily, Lemon, Bravo, Boogers, Booters, Hairball, Louie I, Louie II, Louie III, Elly Mae, Red, Britches, Lola, Flower, McGregor, Little Foot, Tut, Ramseys, Pale Face, Zena, Neighbor Boy and Grey Boy.
