Irman L. May, 89, of McPherson, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 15, 2018, surrounded by his family at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community in Buhler, Kansas. Irman was born on May 2, 1928 in Garden City, Kansas and raised by his grandparents, Sherwood and Stella Johnson near Trousdale, Kansas.
While at Trousdale High School, and later, at Pratt Junior College, Irman played football, a sport for which he developed an overly zealous affection. His love of sports didn’t stop there. He was a fan of the Jayhawks, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the LA Raiders (a team coached for 19 years by his friend, Ollie Spencer), and shared his love of the game with his family! His grandchildren knew not to walk in front of the TV on game day!
A lifetime Kansan, Irman spent most of the last fifty years in McPherson, where he enjoyed woodworking, and remodeling projects in his spare time. He was a great story-teller, never met a stranger, and was able to strike up a conversation with anyone, at any time, making his lifetime career in sales a perfect fit. Irman was a top salesman for Travelers Motor Club for several years, and was later district manager for MasterGuard. Irman served in the community as President of the PTA at Wickersham Elementary, and was a troop leader with the Cub Scouts. During retirement, he (and wife, Ruby) owned and operated SnoBiz, bringing the best ever shaved ice to McPherson. After selling that business, he enjoyed behind-the-scenes assembly work at Wal-Mart, putting together hundreds of bicycles, grills, and more.
Irman loved, and was loved by Ruby, his wife of nearly 50 years, and caregiver for the past several years. He loved sharing time and memories with their family and – in addition to Ruby – is survived by sons, Rick of Beaumont TX, Mike (Charlyn) of Crane TX, Jon of Buhler, and Jim (Elaine) McAllister of McPherson, and daughter Kathy (Curt) Walline of McPherson. His daughter Karen (Jim) Kromer of Toledo OH preceded him in death. Irman is also survived by twelve grandchildren, Brian Jackson, Chris (Crystal) Walline, Erika May, Mike (Lucy) Walline, Andrea May, Amy (Curtis) Baumgartel, Shawna (Tyler) Jones, Travis (Ashley) McAllister, Kerstyne Lawler, Kyler Kromer, Ashlee May, and Kaylie May, as well as many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom will miss him greatly.
Friends may call Sunday, February 18, 2018 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Glidden-Ediger Chapel.
A funeral service will be held at Glidden-Ediger Chapel, McPherson on Monday, February 19, 2018 at 10:00 a.m.
Burial will take place at McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, Kansas.
