Joan Marie Pahls was born June 5, 1931, at the family home south of Beloit, Kansas, seventh child and first daughter of Anthony and Anna Budke Eilert . She had six older brothers to welcome her, Harold, Paul, Robert, Richard, Ralph and George. Her sisters Anna Marie, Marcella, Maxine and another brother Donald soon arrived to complete the family of eleven. Joan passed away peacefully with her family present, Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the age of 86.
Joan attended Marymount College and graduated as a Registered Nurse from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, Concordia, where she worked before marrying Walter Pahls on June 9, 1953. The couple moved to Bryan Air Force Base in Texas. She worked at St Joseph’s Hospital and they welcomed their first child. After returning to Salina, she worked in Pediatrics at St. John’s Hospital until her retirement. During this time they were blessed with six more children. Joan and Walt enjoyed 65 years of marriage. Her greatest love was for her family which she held so dear to her heart.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Walter; children: Sharon and Byron Johnston, Ken and Vicky Pahls, Laurie and Greg McLaughlin, Ron and Mary Pahls, Margie and Kevin Hilkemann, Doug Pahls and Kevin Pahls; grandchildren: Stacey (Brian) Chance, Jeffrey, and Amanda Johnston, Kendra (Dustin) Sylvester, Sara Pahls, Jennifer (Benny) Lopez, Paul, William, and Laura McLaughlin, Lisa (Kanean) Wendell, Kellie, Michelle, and Christy Pahls, Brett, Corey and Curtis Hilkemann, Jacqueline, Sean, and Eric Pahls; great grandchildren: Jordyn, Joshua, and Nolan Johnston, Brookelynn Valeka/Pahls, Aria Wendell, and Carter Ryan.
Preceded in death by grandchildren Brian Hilkemann and Bradley Johnston.
Visitation: Noon-7 p.m. Friday, March 2, with family receiving friends at 6 p.m. and a Rosary beginning at 7 p.m. at Ryan Mortuary, Salina.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 3, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Salina.
Memorials are suggested to: St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or Mosaic Ellsworth Home (home of Jeffrey Johnston.)
