Herbert Harrison Herb Glidden, Jr.

Herbert Harrison Herb Glidden, Jr. 91, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 5:41 p.m., Tuesday, February 27, 2018 while in the company of family members, at Cedars Health Care Center.

Herbert was born in Beloit, Kansas on September 23, 1926, a son of Dorothy Elizabeth (Johnson) and Herbert Harrison Glidden, Sr.

Herb attended the Osborne grade schools and Junior High, Osborne, Kansas. He then attended the Roosevelt Junior High and Topeka High School, Topeka, Kansas and Benson High School, Omaha Nebraska and graduated from Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri in 1944. After his service to his country he attended Kansas University, Lawrence, Kansas and Kansas City College of Mortuary Science, Kansas City, Kansas where he graduated 1949.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, McPherson.

Herb honorably served in the U.S. Army as a CPT in WW II.

Herb started working for Tibbetts Brother’s Funeral Home in Belleville, Kansas. In 1951 Herb became partners with Virgil Mills and bought the Holt-Goede Furniture Store in Ellsworth, Kansas and changed the name to Mills and Glidden Furniture Store. That same year, Herb moved to Abilene, Kansas where he worked for the Tufts – Danner Funeral Home prior to moving to Manhattan, Kansas where he went to work for the Hardman Lumber Company as a traveling salesman. In 1962 Herb and Mary purchased the Quiring Funeral Home in McPherson, Kansas. They changed the name to Quiring-Glidden and later changed the name to Glidden Funeral Home. They sold the funeral home to his son-in-law and son in 1990.

Herb was a Life member of the American Legion Post 24 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715, Masonic Lodge #172; Elks Lodge # 502 B.P.O.E., Lions Club, all of McPherson, Kansas. He was a member of the IsIs Temple of Salina, Kansas. He was a member of the Kansas Funeral Directors Association, and Kansas Embalmers Association for 50 years.

Herbert Harrison Glidden was united in marriage to Mary Louise Tibbetts on June 25, 1950 at Marion, Kansas. Mary died January 8, 2018

He is survived by his children, D. Jeanne Ediger and husband Ed, of McPherson, Kansas, Herbert H.”Trey” Glidden III and wife SueLyn, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Troy D. Glidden and wife Rhonda, of McPherson, Kansas; his 8 grandchildren, Josh Ediger (Teri), Beau Ediger, Sam Ediger (Sarah), Tyler Glidden (Chelsea Holm), Justin Glidden (Kelsey Hammett), Treyce Glidden, Jakob Glidden, and Alex Glidden; his 12 great-grandchildren, Logan Ediger, Braeden Ediger, Collin Ediger, Laeton Ediger, Addison Ediger, Landen Ediger, Lawson Ediger, Britton Ediger, Sophia Collins, Bradon Holm, Berkley Holm, and Ensley Glidden.; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents; a stillborn son Baby Glidden; his sister Elizabeth Betty Weatherell; and his wife Mary Glidden

Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2018 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, McPherson.

The funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, McPherson, Kansas, at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 5, 2018 with Reverend H. Dick Reynolds, Jr. officiating.

Interment at McPherson Cemetery McPherson, Kansas with military honors presented by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2718 and American Legion Post 24 both of McPherson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in memory of Herb and they can be sent in care of the Glidden – Ediger Funeral Home; 222 West Euclid Street; McPherson, Kansas 67460.
