Bonnie ” Jean “Adams Vickers was born to George “Bud” and Ardith Adams on June 1, 1930. She and her younger twin brothers, Floyd and Lloyd grew up on a farm in southwest Sheridan Co. She married Clarence (Bill) Vickers on January 18, 1948. Bill and Jean welcomed four daughters and one son. The family lived on their farm in southeast Sheridan Co. until 1972 when they moved to Jean’s dream home in Hoxie. Her new home was her castle and she enjoyed her life there until they decided to downsize in early 2015. She was admitted to the Sheridan County Long Term Care in December of 2015 and passed away there on March 3, 2018 at the age of 87.
Not only was Jean a busy mother and farmwife but she also worked as a cook in the school cafeteria, clerked in a dress shop, and sold beauty products. Jean became an EMT in her early 50s and served for several years. Wanting to challenge herself further and fulfill her lifelong dream, at age 57 she graduated from cosmetology school. She opened “The Arranger” and operated her beauty shop out of her home for 10 years until her retirement. Jean was always fashionably dressed and if she had her way, would have worn her high heels til the last day.
Jean’s truest calling was being a grandma. She could rock babies for hours, play cards and games, have sleepovers, watch movies and whenever she went shopping the grandkids’ favorite toys and snacks just happened to jump into her cart. The grandkids and greatgrandkids were the light of her life and she made sure they all knew that. She also helped several working mothers by being an “adopted” grandma/babysitter for their children. She loved having the little ones on her lap.
Grandma Jean always had a ready wit and often would be heard complimenting those who she shared her days with. She will be long remembered as Queen Jean during her stay in the nursing home.
She was preceded in death by her father, mother, brothers, and infant grandson Lane Marcus. She leaves her husband Bill, Hoxie, daughters Melaney Hartman and husband David of Fort Collins, CO, Marci Blodgett and husband David, Lacey WA, Billi Beckman and husband Mike, Selden, KS, Becky Vickers, Hoxie, and son Kelly and wife Deb, Hoxie; 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Jean leaves a legacy of love for her family and friends.
