Rodger Scott Howard

Rodger Scott Howard was born on June 23, 1942 in Denver, Colorado, the son of Victor and Grace Biggs Howard. He died on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at his home in Cawker City, Kansas at the age of 75 years.

Rodger grew up in Arvada, Colorado and enjoyed summers on the family farm near Colby, Kansas. He later attended John Brown University and then from 1964-1968 served in the United States Air Force, where he was an Airman 3rd Class, working as a psychiatric medic in helping returning veterans from the service. Following his service, he moved to Wichita, worked for Gene Fields Mobile Homes and Bray Trucking Company. He and a friend later started their own truck line out of Dodge City, The Girls Inc. Many years later he moved to Downs, where he worked for Cary Trucking and then started his own truck line, Rodger S. Howard Trucking.

In September 1964, he was united in marriage with Marlene Marrs, and three daughters were born to this union, which later dissolved. Rodger was very proud of his daughters, and grandchildren, and all of their accomplishments, and made a great effort to visit and make an impact in their lives.

Rodger was a member of the Cawker City Baptist Church and the Cawker City American Legion Post #379, as well as a member of the Masons and Shriners organizations. He also greatly enjoyed his social coffee time at the Cawker City Senior Center, and was a strong supporter of various other community organizations. He also took great pride in his coin collection, and took great pleasure in sharing them with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Larry who died in infancy.

Rodger is survived by his daughters, Darla Hammar of Winfield, Brenda High and husband Dean of Overland Park, KS, and Jana Burjes and husband Roger of Cedar Falls, IA; three grandsons, Caleb and Joshua Burjes, and Zachary Hammar; a sister, Nancy Saddler and her husband Gary of Denver, CO; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 11 AM Tuesday, May 15 at the Cawker City Baptist Church. The casket will remain closed. Graveside services will be at 11 AM Wednesday, May 16 at the Colby Cemetery in Colby, KS. Memorials may be given to the Cawker City First Baptist Church or the Cawker City Senior Center.
