Irene Martin

Irene Martin, of Salina, died Friday, May 25, 2018. She was born on March 6, 1930, to Rose (Bachofer) and Alexander Burghart. She was born in Salina and remained most of her life in the area. After graduating from Sacred Heart High School, she graduated from Marymount College and became a registered dietitian. She spent over 40 years in the profession spending the last 35 of years of her career at St. John’s Hospital in Salina assisting patients and enjoying their friendship.

On November 23, 1953, she married James F. Martin. Together they raised six children on a farm in rural Saline County with the children graduating from Sacred Heart High School in Salina. Irene was an active member of the Solomon parish until moving to Salina after her husband’s death in May of 1996. In retirement Irene undertook the custodial assignments for two elderly individuals without family, plus volunteered as a reader at Oakdale Elementary School and spent time assisting patients at Salina Cares.

Irene is preceded in death by her parents, and infant brother, her husband, son Joe, granddaughter Samantha, grandson Jonah and great-grandson Aidan.

Irene is survived by her daughter Susan Raccagno of St. Louis; son Jim (Sandy) of Topeka; daughter-in-law Lynn of Solomon; daughter Andrea Trupp (Rob) of Scottsdale, Arizona; son Brad (Jennifer) of Plymouth, Minnesota; son Bob (Michelle) of Solomon. Survivors also include 18 grandchildren (Joy, Melody, Matthew, Angel, Sarah, Megan, James, Bradley, Ali, Mariah, Maeve, Katy, Andrew, Grace, Adam, Noah, Ben and Thomas) and 10 great-grandchildren (Michael, Killian, Miranda, Sheamus, Ruby, Elio, Cecilia, Ella, Lyndee and Sawyer).

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Solomon, on June 6th with a rosary at 7 p.m. The Rite of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on June 7th at the church followed by internment at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Solomon. Ryan Mortuary is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Catholic Community Foundation for the Jonah Thomas Martin Memorial Fund, 103 N. Ninth, Salina, Kansas 67401.
