Donald L. “Don” Johnson, 87, of Salina, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2018. He was born July 4, 1930 to Walter and Mary Johnson in Plainville. Don was united in marriage with Shirley A. Carpenter, Jan. 5, 1954 at the courthouse in Salina.
He attended and graduated Brookville High School and played in the band and on the basketball team. After graduation he joined the Air Force and was sent to the Philippine Islands where he was promoted to Sargent and was a military policeman. As a young man he loved cars. He drove fast and wrecked many vehicles but was always happy to get a new set of wheels. As an adult, Don loved to go dancing with Shirley on Saturday nights at the Eagles. He loved to fish, camp, and boat. He taught all his children and grandchildren to fish and spent many hours helping them reel in the big ones. Don was forever fixing something. There was never a problem that he couldn’t figure out a solution for. He was a regular MacGyver. He was the best grandfather anyone could ask for and loved to spend time with his grandkids. Don spent most of his working career in the grocery business. He worked many years for Ashton’s Supermarket in the produce department. He then went to work for Gibson’s where he did everything from produce manager to store manager before retiring. Don was very active in the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He held all the officer positions in the organization and is a past President.
Survivors include: his children, Donald Wayne Johnson, Debra Shirack, Dennis Johnson (Candy), Dale Johnson (Linda), all of Salina; grandchildren, Tess Crawford, Rachel Shirack, Katie Scaduto, Thomas Gray, Holly Bycroft, Kelsey Johnson, Lindsey Sotomayor, and Tiffany Johnson; ten great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary Jane Wilson of Salina. In addition to his family, Don is survived by his very good friends, Al and Kari McCall. Don will be missed by his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends. Love you more!!
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 18, at Ryan Mortuary. Private interment will follow at Gypsum Hill Cemetery.
