Maurice Hammer

With great sadness, the family of Maurice Hammer announces his passing Wednesday, July 18, 2018, at the age of 80 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Loretta, and his children, Gregory (Carolisa) and Stephen (Elizabeth). As the eldest son of Harold and Mabel Hammer, he is survived by his brothers, Loren, Gene, Gary and Don, and sister, Virginia.
A native of Norway, KS, Maurice grew up on the farm working alongside his father and brothers. There he learned about agriculture, which was the foundation for his career. Maurice graduated from Kansas State University with a graduate degree in Agricultural Economics. After several assignments with the USDA, he retired in 1998 as deputy state statistician for the Statistical Reporting Service in Athens, Ga. 
A devoted husband and father, Maurice served in the Army National Guard and was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, with family greeting friends from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Scandia.
Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 26, in the Norway Cemetery, followed by refreshments at the Norway Community Center.
In lieu of flowers, those who so desire may make memorial donations in honor of Maurice to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Norway.
