4929967_220wIsaac Xavier Howard IV, 22, of Salina, passed away Sunday, August 2, 2015. He was born July 8, 1993 in Chicago, IL.

He was preceded in death by his biological mother, Felecia Howard, 1995.

Survivors include his mother; Kimberley Howard of Herington, father; IsaacHoward, III of Tavares, FL, sisters; Jessica Howard, Jennifer Howard, Jaimee Howard all of Salina, Shannon Ivery of Chicago, IL, Diamond Howardof Tavares,FL, and Nyshayona Howard of Minneapolis, MN; brothers; JustinHoward, Jason Howard both of Salina, Darryl Ivery, Richard Ivery both of Chicago, IL and Jabari Thompson of Tulsa, OK; children of his heart; Mia Tayshiana Rose Ross and Mya Tawshiana Rose Ross; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Wednesday from 1-7 with family to receive guests from 5-7 at Roselawn Heights Memorial Chapel, 1920 East Crawford, Salina, KS.

Funeral services will be held at 10am, Thursday, August 13, 2015 at the chapel.

4927773_220w_1Betty J. Just, 93 of Salina, passed away Friday, August 7, 2015. She was born June 28, 1922 in Lorraine, KS.

She retired from the State of Kansas as a Clerk of the District Courts in Saline County after 33 years.

Betty was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, First Presbyterian Women, Marion Rebekah Lodge, Social Order of the Beauceant, Smoky Valley Genealogical Society, Elks Ladies, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, D.A.R., (Past) President of Kansas District Clerks Assocation, Soroptimist, Business and Professional Women’s Club and the League of Women Voters. Betty also performed a great deal of volunteer work.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Clarence and Rose Mary (Blades) Willms, and her husband; Robert “Bud” Just, two brothers; Donald and Robert Willms.

Survivors include her children; Cynthia (Troy) Wiseman of Topeka and Steven Just, two sisters; Mary Ottiwell of Topeka and Joanne (Cloyd) Ikenberry of Quinter, four grandchildren; Shawn (Justin) Clark, Adria (Brent) Hintz, Michael (Brittany) Wiseman and Ryan Wiseman, all of Topeka, six great grandchildren; Kaitlyn Monell, Matthew Monell, Jr., Makenzie Hintz, J’Lynn Wiseman, Mathius Wiseman, and Londan Wiseman.

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 11, 2015 from 11:00am until 1:00pm, prior to the start of the funeral service at 1:00pm, at the First Presbyterian Church, 308 S Eighth St, Salina

Roxanne Marie Mitchell, 42, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Thursday, August 6th.

Roxanne was born in Torrance, California on February 6, 1973, a daughter of Cindy Delgado, of Salina, Kansas and Jeff Kelton, of Hawaii.

Survivors include husband, Ron Mitchell; daughter, Amanda Mitchell, of Salina, Kansas; son,Michael Kidd; parents, Jeff Kelton of Hawaii and Cindy Delgado of Salina, Kansas; brothers, Jeffery Kelton, Nick Kelton, Matt Kelton; sister, Mari Kelton; grandfather, Juan Delgado; granddaughter, Lillian Burkenbine.

She is preceded in death by her grandmother, Betty Delgado.

A Memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Family request donations be made to help with funeral expenses.

Carolyn J. Allen, 79, Minneapolis, died Saturday, August 8, 2015. She was born October 24, 1935 in Kansas City, MO to James and Beulah (Mayfield) Dial.

Carolyn worked as a C.N.A. and she was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband Larry and a granddaughter.
Survivors include her children Larry Bickford of Wichita; Debi McConnell of Blackhawk, SD, and Cindy Hauck of Ada; 11 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, August 13 at Highland Cemetery, Minneapolis. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis where the family will receive friends from 6-8. Memorials may be made to the MHS FFA.

coo50808vet_ffffffJoseph R. Cooke, 86, of Salina, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015. He was born Sept. 17, 1928, in Simpson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert C. and Anna Lucille (Ditto) Cooke; and sisters, Maxine (Cooke) Poe, Virginia (Cooke) Urbanek and Joyce (Cooke) Massey.

Survivors include his wife, companion, and friend of 63 years, Bonnie J. (Kitterman) Cooke; daughter, Cynthia (Cooke) Arvelo, of Salina; two sons, Craig Cooke, of Clearlake, Calif., and Curtis Cooke, of Tampa, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Jan Cooke, of Tampa; five grandchildren, Jennifer McNeal, Joe Wigg, Katrina (Cooke) Ringler, Greggory Cooke and Curtis Jay Cooke; five great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Joe served in the U.S. military for 22 years, retiring with a distinguished record. He later retired from the Salina School District as building operator and coordinator of shop services. He also retired as director of maintenance for Asbury Hospitals.

Joe was a member of Salina Kiwanis Club for 25 years, serving as president for two terms, lieutenant governor of District 4, Kansas District of Kiwanis, and was awarded distinguished lieutenant governor. In addition, Joe also served as secretary for Kansas Kiwanis Foundation for 11 years.

A funeral service will be held at First Covenant Church, Salina, where Joe served as an active member for many years. The service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, with luncheon to follow. Private burial will be in Gypsum Cemetery, Gypsum.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sunflower Adult Day Services, 401 W. Iron Ave., Salina 67401.

vet_ffffffPaul Loren, “Johnny”, Whitehair, farmer-stockman, former county commissioner and insurance agent, passed away on Monday, August 10 at Abilene Memorial Hospital, Abilene, Kansas. He was 83 years old.
Paul was born February 23, 1932 in Abilene, the son of Paul Xavier and Mary (Rauch) Whitehair. On August 8, 1959 he married JoAnne Curran. She survives of the home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mary, and siblings, Norman, Donald, Patricia, Mary Virginia and Richard.
Paul received a Bachelor of Science in Milling Administration from Kansas State University in 1955. He proudly served his country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army, Infantry from 1955-1957. He began his professional career as an assistant production manager with ADM, Larabee Mills in Kansas City, Missouri. He also held positions of territory manager and consulting engineer with J.B. Ehrsam Company, Continental Engineering and Kansas Sales Service, Hutchison, Kansas. Paul was a project engineer with Pratt Industrial Development with the primary project being completion of a 30,000 head feed lot in Pratt. He returned to Abilene in 1962 to become a farmer-stockman with Whitehair Brothers, an operation he co-owned and operated with his brother, Richard J. Whitehair from 1962-1990. Upon his retirement from farming, Paul began his crop adjusting career with Rain/ Hail Company from 1993-1997 and continued with Great American Insurance, Lawrence, Kansas from 1997 to present.
Paul was a life-long member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus and a former BPOE member. He was active in farming organizations including the American Agriculture Movement, Dickinson County Farmers Union, Abilene Co-op Association and the Dickinson County Farm Bureau. He served on the Dickinson County Commission from 1996-2004 and was also an agricultural advisor to US Representative Martha Keyes and Jim Jeffries.
In later life, Paul developed a love of flying and skydiving. He completed two tandem jumps and was in the process of learning to pilot the plane as well. He had many wonderful days with members of the Kansas State University skydiving club.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, JoAnne, Abilene, Kansas; two sons, Paul R., Abilene, and Jon G.(Karen), Fairfield, California; three daughters, Jana E. (Greg) Ultzsch, Wichita, Kansas, Lori A. (J.D.) Erskin, Johnson City, Kansas, and Lisa M. (Draque) Whitehair-Carver, Ozawkie, Kansas; fourteen grandchildren – Kaleb, Reilly, Lindsey, Kasey, Isabel, Alex, Kyle, Aidan, Garrett (Sarah), Ryan (Tanya), Dalton, Brady, Maggie and Brett.
A rosary and visitation will be Wednesday, August 12 at 6:00 p.m. at Martin Becker Carlson Funeral Home, Abilene. Mass of Christian Burial will be St. Andrew’s Catholic Church on Thursday, August 13 at 10:00 a.m. Graveside services will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Abilene. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in Paul’s name to St. Andrew’s Catholic School, Abilene, Kansas. Memorial contributions may left in care of Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW 3rd, Abilene, Kansas 67410.

32, passed away Friday, August 7th, in Abilene. She was born March 1, 1983 in Lewiston, Idaho, the daughter of Doug and Ginger (Bergamo) Gill. Growing up in Idaho, she attended local schools, graduated from Lewiston High School and attended Lewis and Clark State College and Kansas State University. She had been employed by various retail business. In 2014, Jennifer married Shawn Humphrey. She enjoyed her children, horseback riding, playing games and swimming.

Carl Harris.jpegvet_ffffffCarl Curtis Harris, died Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at Grand Island, Nebraska, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.

Carl Curtis Harris, son of Eugene Dale and Ellen Marie (Karns) Harris, was born February 23, 1927, in Dodge City, KS, the fourth of eight children; he died Tuesday, July , 21, 2015, at Grand Island, Nebraska, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.

After graduating from high school in Dodge City, Carl served in the United States Army at Ft. Benning, Georgia, during WWII and was honorably discharged in December 1946. He then moved to McPherson, KS, where he earned a mathematics education degree from McPherson College.

On October 14, 1951, Carl married Helen Irene Osmer. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage before Helen’s death in 2007. This union was blessed with three children and eight grandchildren.

Carl taught high school math and science for one year in Hanston, KS, and five years in Burrton, KS, before returning to McPherson in 1958. He taught math at McPherson High School for the next 33 years, retiring in 1991.

Upon retirement, Carl’s days were spent meeting his fellow retirees for coffee twice daily, gardening, playing dominoes and cards, and traveling with Helen. He was a devoted husband and beloved father and grandfather. Carl was a kindhearted, caring person who always looked for the positive in people and situations, and his bright smile and deep, jovial laugh were contagious. His family always looked forward to his freshly baked cookies, warm hugs, and sage advice. He enjoyed a good pipe, a crisp pastry, and a new shirt. He especially took pleasure in mornings on his deck, sipping a cup of coffee as he surveyed his flowers and listened to the birds.

As his Alzheimer’s advanced, Carl moved to Nebraska to be near family in 2009. He died peacefully at the Nebraska Veteran’s Home in Grand Island, NE, on July 21, 2015.

Carl was preceded in death by his wife Helen; brothers Ernest (Mariam) and Gene (Eileen); sisters Grace Embers, Naomi Cook (Bryce), Esther Martin (Dale), and Rena Ruth Pyle (Don).

He is survived by his sister Joan Smith(Edgar); brother-in-law Bob Embers; daughter Linda Allman (Dale) from Texas; sons Curtis (Sherrie) of Granbury, TX, and Drew (Amy) of Hebron, NE; grandchildren Scott, Roslyn, Nathaniel (Lauren), Zachary (Megan), Benjamin Carl, Cole, Hank, and Maggie; great-grandchildren Marcus and Paxton; and a host of nephews, nieces, friends, and former students.

Graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, August 15, 2015 at the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, Kansas.

Memorials in memory of Carl are suggested to the MHS (McPherson High School) Math Department, McPherson, Kansas or the Alzheimer’s Association and they can be sent in care of the Glidden – Ediger Funeral Home; 222 West Euclid Street; McPherson, Kansas 67460.

Leonard_A_Mattasvet_ffffffLeonard A. Mattas, 86, passed away August 6, 2015 at Golden Living Center in Wilson, Kansas. He was born September 7, 1928 on the family farm in Ellsworth County, the son of Anton and Matilda (Soukup) Mattas.

A lifetime resident of Wilson, Leonard was a farmer and rancher. He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954 then granted an Honorable Discharge. He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson, Knights of Columbus Council #1924 in Wilson, Wilson American Legion Post #262, life member of Russell V.F.W. Post #6240, and served on the Board of Directors for AGCO in Russell. On April 10, 1956 he married Irene Demel at Holy Family Church in Odin. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Mike Mattas and wife Mary of Wilson; daughter Norma Schneweis and husband David of Claflin; brother Raymond Mattas of Russell; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two daughters; Nancy Mattas in 1968 and Mary Mattas in 1979.

Vigil with Knights of Columbus Rosary will be Friday, August 7, 2015 at 7:00pm at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00am Saturday, August 8, 2015 at the church celebrated by Fr. Mathew Chacko. Burial will follow in the St. Wenceslaus Church Cemetery with Fort Riley Honor Guard, Russell V.F.W. Post #6240, and Wilson American Legion Post #262. Friends may call from 1:00pm to 5:00pm at Foster Mortuary in Wilson.
