Lura “Opal” Batcheller Carroll, Minneapolis passed away at the Good Samaritan Society – Minneapolis, on August 30, 2015 at the age of 100. She was the last of the 12 children of Joel & Myrtle (Morton) Batcheller of Tescott. She was also preceded by her husbands, Herbert B. Howard, North Platte, NE and Gordon “Red” Carroll, Bennington.
Opal accepted Jesus Christ at a very young age, and attended church regularly where ever she lived. She was a member of the Episcopal Church and later the Methodist Church.
She was born December 11, 1914 in Tescott and was a Tescott High School Alumni. In 1928 she graduated Asbury Hospital Nursing School, Salina. as a Registered Nurse. She began as a nurse at a Tuberculosis sanatorium in Norton, where she met and married Herb Howard. She treated injured solders during WWII at a hospital in Kansas City, KS, and was a surgery room supervisor in North Platte, NE. She was widowed there in 1961. She retired in 1976 as an Emergency Surgery Room Supervisor in Lorenzo, TX. Shortly afterwards, she was located by her High School sweetheart, Gordon ‘Red’ Carroll. They married a year later and moved to Florence. Two years later they moved to Ottawa County State Lake, Bennington to be close to family. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, traveling in their camper across the United States and being a member of a camping club. But her passion was being with family.
She is survived by her son & daughter-in law, Herbert and Bobbie Howard, Bennington; step-son and wife, Gary and Mary Carroll, Rockwall, TX; grandchildren Vincent Howard, Victoria Howard, Stephen Howard, Patrick Ditson, Michael Carroll, Patty Carroll-Putter, Heather Carroll-Mueller; and 18 Great Grandchildren. She will also be remembered by a large multitude of nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.
There will be a Celebration of Life Service held to honor Opal’s life at the Bennington Bible Church, 824 N. Nelson St. (Across from the Bennington Cemetery), Bennington, Ks. 67422 on Saturday Sept 5, 2015, at 1:00 P.M. Snacks, beverages and fellowship will follow after the service, at the church. Memorials may be made to the Bennington Ambulance Service.

Larry E. Mangel, age 80 of New Bern, North Carolina, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2015, at Carolina East Medical Center.
He was a 22 year Air Force veteran. Following his military retirement he worked as Station manager for World Airways on Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan, and as a Contract Specialist for the U.S. Army in Frankfurt, Germany.
Larry is survived by his wife Linda; one daughter, Ronda Roberts (Philip) of Lafayette, LA; and two sons, Larry Mangel & Steve Mangel (Annette) both of Alexandria, LA; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Max Picking and his parents.
A Memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 4, 2015 at the Abilene Cemetery in Abilene, Kansas with Reverend Lindsey Brummer officiating. Honor Guard services will be provided by the McConnell Air Force Honor Guard.
Memorial donation may be made in Larry’s honor to the American Heart Association or to the charity of one’s choice and may be sent in care of Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW 3rd, Abilene, Kansas 67410.

Ruth Thorstenberg, 89 of Lindsborg, passed away August 30, 2015.
She was born July 4, 1926, in Lindsborg, KS, the daughter of Arvid and Esther (Ranseen) Wallin. On November 26, 1952, she married Roger Thorstenberg in Lindsborg, KS. She was a retired music teacher. She was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Reynolds.
Ruth leaves behind many loved ones, including husband, Roger, 2 nephews, John Reynolds, Richmond, VA., Thomas Reynolds, Tucson, AZ., and one niece, Mary Jose of Elk Grove, CA.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 3, from noon until funeral service time of 2 PM at the Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lindsborg.
Burial will be held at Elmwood Cemetery, Lindsborg.
Memorials may be designated to Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church or Bethany College in care of Christians Funeral Home 103 N. Washington, Lindsborg, KS 67456.

Sharlet E. (Fisk) Ginther, 67, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.
Celebration of Sharlet’s Life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at the St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Pastor Earl Haggard officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Cremation has preceded the services. A Memorial has been established with Pheasants Forever.
