Gene was born west of Clifton on the family farm to Emery L. and Laura E. Iverson (Lyon) on October 26, 1938. In childhood Gene and his brothers spent many hours working the family farm with their parents. As a boy he attended Clifton High School and participated in many high school sports including track, basketball and football. He also played the clarinet in the high school band. He graduated from CHS in 1957. During his last summer in high school and the year after, he worked on a harvesting crew starting in the panhandle of Texas and finishing in southern Canada.
After high school, due to an interest in flying their father had ingrained in them by his ownership of a J-2 Cub, Gene and Larry attended airline business school in Kansas City, MO. Following graduation, Gene went to work for Frontier Airlines and brother Larry to Braniff Airlines in 1959. Gene worked for Frontier in various stations in Denver, CO, Lincoln, NE and Kansas City, MO. He also worked for People’s Express and Continental Airlines and finished his airline career in 1986. Also, he participated in the movement of the main downtown airport in Kansas City to the new airport at MCI.
Gene stayed aligned with the transportation industry by going into trucking in 1986. He started as a safety officer for a transport company in Kansas City and progressed to driving a truck for Crete Carrier Corporation. He truly enjoyed being “on the road” driving transcons from East coast to West Coast and back again. During his time at Crete he was awarded the “Highway Angel Award” for actions he took to help others during a highway accident. He retired from Crete in 2006.
Gene loved to be outdoors whether it be camping or mowing his lawn. He also loved to travel with his favorite spots being Hawaii and the beaches of Mexico. He was an avid supporter of the Boy Scouts of America and a former Assistant Scoutmaster in Platte Woods, MO.
Gene loved the Lord and Jesus Christ was his Savior and he had mentioned that he was looking forward to that meeting someday. He frequently attended church and participated in many church events and Bible studies. Even when on the road, Gene made it a priority to attend church each Sunday.
