Obituaries 17 November, 2015

dic51115Bettie M. Dick, 82, of Salina, passed away Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015. Bettie was born Jan. 31, 1933, in rural Marquette to Ted and Marie Reissig.

She married Melvin Dick. Bettie was a food service manager for Roosevelt Lincoln Middle School and Lakewood Middle School. Bettie very much loved her children, grandkids, and great-grandkids, she loved KU along with visits to Las Vegas to gamble. Bettie was extremely lucky at Gold Fish slot machines. She enjoyed going to the movies, going out to eat and her friends. Bettie was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Gary Dick; son in-law, Allan Edwards; and brother, Marlin Reissig.

Survivors include a daughter, Connie Edwards; grandkids, Lindsey Edwards, Kolby Edwards, Chris (Kylie) Hurting, and Michael Smith; great-grandkids, Lawson Oeser, Lexi Oeser, Lauren Oeser, Lestyn Hurtig and Addison Hurtig; and brother, James Reissig.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, at Ryan Mortuary.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. at Ryan Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to breast cancer or donor’s choice and sent in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina 67401.

mau51113Charles J. Mauer, 80, of Salina and formerly of Topeka, passed away Friday, Nov. 13, 2015. He was born March 19, 1935, in Topeka, to John and Emma (Hefner) Mauer.

Survivors include: wife, Ruby, of the home; son, Brian Mauer; daughter, Brenda (Kyle) Sandefur; brothers, Frank and Raymond Mauer; sisters, Anna Harmes, Lavina McCall and Delores Mauer; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Predeceased by: son, Douglas; three brothers; five sisters; and a daughter-in-law.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church, Salina. Committal service: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Topeka. Visitation: 4–8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina 67401.

Viola Odgers, 69, of Salina, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2015. She was born June 11, 1946, in Gridley, the daughter of Roy and Ethel (Baysinger) Lingenfelter.

She was a registered nurse and worked for Smoky Hill Rehabilitation Center in Salina and the Newman Hospital in Emporia.

Survivors include two daughters, Shelly Parks, of Salina, and Teri Odgers, of Strong City; son, Kevin Odgers, of Wichita; former husband and friend, LaVern Odgers, of Strong City; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Cremation was chosen; no services are planned.

Memorials may be given to the family for planting of a memorial tree in Jerry Ivy Park.

Ryan Mortuary, Salina, is in charge of arrangements.

90, passed away Monday, November 16th. He was born January 12, 1925 in Bakersfield, California, the son of Frank A. and Alice G. (Gates) Weiss. Growing up in Grapevine, California and Grants Pass Oregon, George attended local schools and joined the U.S. Navy in 1942. He retired from the Navy after 28 years. On November 29, 1969 He married Louise Mayes. All of their married life was spent in rural Abilene. George had been employed by Ehrsam’s, later becoming C.E., retiring in the 1980’s. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family, hunting and fishing, reading and his library of about 3000 books. George was preceded in death by infant daughters Carol Ann and Susan Marie Weiss.

Graveside services and interment will be 2:00 PM Thursday, November 19th, at the Bethel Cemetery with Pastor Jason Kohler officiating. The family suggests memorial contributions in his name be made to the Hospice of Dickinson County. They may be left at or sent in care of the Danner Funeral Home, POB 758 Abilene, Kansas 67410.

564a9d97b7fdbJulia Luna, age 88, passed away Friday, November 13, 2015 at Salem Home, Hillsboro where she had been a resident for seven weeks.  She was born February 26, 1927 at Herington, one of eleven children born to Gabino and Maria Ramos Nunez.  At age 3 1/2 she moved to Mexico City with her family where she grew to adulthood.   Julia was a homemaker, an excellent cook, and did house cleaning.

Manuel Luna, age 86, passed away Sunday, November 15, 2015, at Salem Home, of Hillsboro, just two days after his wife of 62 years.  He was born December 24, 1928, in Mexico City, Mexico.  Manuel worked for the Rock Island Railroad doing maintenance.

They were united in marriage on August 11, 1953, in Mexico City, Mexico.

They were preceded in death by their parents; twin infant daughters, Graciela and Thedora; all but one of each of their siblings; and a grandson, Jason Luna.

They are survived by their sons: Victor and his wife Pat of Elko, Nevada; Ernie and his wife Aurea of Xilitla, San Luis Potosi, Mexico; Tony and his wife Debbie of Lowell, Massachusetts; and George and his wife Dawn of Marion; Manuel’s brother, Edward Alvarez of Mexico City, Mexico; 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

A Graveside Service will be held for both Manuel and Julia, at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 2015, at the Lost Springs Cemetery.  A Visitation with family will be held Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion. Memorials have been suggested for Good Shepherd Hospice or Salem Home in care of the Zeiner Funeral Home, 205 Elm, Marion, KS, 66861.

Jill Marie (Johnston) Merritt passed away Saturday, November 14, 2015 at the age of 41. She was born on August 28, 1974 in Emporia, Kansas. She graduated from Evanston High School in Evanston, Wyoming with the Class of 1992 and went on to Vocational Technical School in order to obtain an Associate’s Degree in Business.

Jill was a member of the Nazarene Church in Plainville and enjoyed listening to country music as well as 80’s rock. She loved socializing and being around friends and family. She looked forward to daily visits with customers at Alta where she worked as an Assistant Manager, and was a huge fan of Facebook and Snapchat. Never a stranger to anyone, she couldn’t go anywhere without seeing somebody she knew. Recently, she was able to introduce Justina to her father and Johnston Grandparents.

Jill is survived by her daughter Justina L. Merritt of Plainville; parents Richard and Glenda Palmberg of Plainville; and brother Jason Palmberg and wife Laurissa of Henderson, NV.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents Jack Kennard, and Fred and Winifred Palmberg.

Words are not enough to describe the unconditional love between Jill and her daughter Justina. Justina was the love of her life and the treasure of her heart. Jill will be greatly missed, but the legacy of her life and love will last forever.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at the First Christian Church in Plainville. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery near Palco.
