Robert (Bob) Dean Boss, 92, Bennington, died peacefully on January 24, 2016 surrounded by family. He was born September 23, 1923 in Bennington, KS, to Glen and Ruth (Heywood) Boss. Bob graduated from Bennington High School and joined the U.S. Army where he was a sharp shooter in the Philippines and Japan during WWII.
On October 27, 1946 he was united in marriage with Edna Florence Nelson of Ada, KS. Together they farmed east of Bennington, raised sheep, and served their community where Bob was a township trustee/board member, sold insurance, and actively helped with 4-H. Bob was a member of the United Church of Bennington where he served many years on parish council and myriad committees. Bob loved to tell jokes, help others, and brighten lives with bags of his homemade caramel popcorn.
He is survived by siblings Mae (Cloyd) Fox, Longmont, CO; Max (Annabelle) Boss and sister-in-law Donna Boss, Bennington; and brother-in-law Wayne Baugh, Monument, CO. Children Barbara Powell, East Granby, CT; Patricia (Steve) Baccus, Minneapolis; and Robert N (Renee) Boss, Bennington. Grandchildren Heather Powell, Kirstin (Ryan) Powell-Williams, Mindy (Jude) Wilson, Kimberly (Jason) Bird, Michelle Baccus, Stephanie Baccus, Kenny (Missy) Baccus, Lacy Boss, Rob Boss, and Kylee (Austin) Fick. Great-grandchildren Calvin Williams; Mikaleigh, Devany, Brenna and Tug Wilson; Dakota Baccus; Keyon Baccus; and Audrey Fick. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Edna on January 21, 2016; siblings Keith, Don, Harley Ray Boss and Velda Baugh; and son-in-law David Powell.
A Visitation to Celebrate the Lives of Bob and Edna will be held January 30 at 1:30 at Ottawa County Health Center Long Term Care. Family will hold a private inurnment of ashes. A Memorial Service honoring Bob and Edna will be May 28 at 2:00, United Church of Bennington (UCB), Bennington, KS. James Robert “Jim” Hoover, Sr., 68, of Salina, passed away Friday, January 22nd, at Salina Regional Health Center.
Jim was born in Kansas City, Missouri on June 20, 1947, to the late Kathleen M. (Hauber) and Robert L. Hoover.
Jim was a twenty year veteran of the United States Army.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra (Allen) Hoover; sons, James R. Hoover, Jr., of Salina, Kansas,Scott A. Hoover, of Salina, Kansas, Shawn A. Hoover and wife Mindy, of Texarkana, Texas, Jonathan P. Hoover, of Salina, Kansas; daughter, Jaime Hoover, of Salina, Kansas; brothers, Richard Hoover, of Ohio, Gary Hoover, of California; sister, Lynn Hoover, of Ohio; and 3 grandsons.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents.
At the family’s request there will be no visitation as cremation has been chosen.
No services are planned.
Memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s name to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Larree Ann Kochevar, 77, of Salina died January 19, 2016. She was born February 18, 1939, to Lawrence and Ethel Todd of Salina.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James L. Kochevar; and her sister, Della Circe, of Yuba City, CA.
She is survived by her three children, Jimmee Kochevar of St. Louis, MO, Kyree (Tom) Maher of Montclair, CA, and Darrin (Tammie) Kochevar of Salina.
Larree is also survived by her brother, James Robert Todd of Olathe; five grandchildren who knew her fondly as “Gammy”; and numerous nieces and nephews.
When her kids were growing, Larree loved going fishing and camping at the Waterhole. She was an avid sun worshiper, and in later years loved golfing, feeding “her birds” and other wildlife. Large, colorful hats were her beloved trademark, along with her beautiful smile.
A private ceremony for family was held at Ryan Mortuary with burial following in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Humane Society or St. Jude Children’s Hospital and left in care of the mortuary.

BROOKVILLE — Constance Diane “Connie” Lill, 70, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016, at her Brookville home. Connie was born Jan. 16, 1946, in Salina. She was a lifetime member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Brookville. Connie graduated from Brookville High School, Marymount College of Salina, with a bachelor of arts in theatre and english, and Betty Bonn Modeling School, Kansas City.
Connie raised her four children in Brookville, Melissa Lill, of Brookville, John Langer, of Kansas City, Kan., Chad Langer, of Lawrence, and Jarrod (Pam) Langer, of Salina.
Connie was preceded in death by her parents, John and Nell Lill, of Brookville, and an infant brother, in Rockaway Beach, Calif.
She is survived by her brother, Jack Lill; her four children; and eight grandchildren.
Connie worked at Salina Regional Health Center as an Environmental Sanitarian and at Braum’s as a cashier.
Memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, at St. Joseph Parish, Brookville. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, with rosary at 7 p.m. at Ryan Mortuary, Salina.

Louise R. Garten, 82 of Abilene, passed away Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Salina Regional Hospital. She was born February 12, 1933 in Abilene, the daughter of Glenn and Mary (Witmer) Hampton. She grew up in the Abilene area and graduated from Abilene High in 1951. On November 9, 1952 she was united in marriage to Alvin “Buzz” Garten in Abilene. He preceded her in death February 24, 1989. Louise was a home maker and also worked at the Abilene Public Library for several years. She enjoyed volunteering for numerous organizations and was a member of the P.E.O. Chapter CZ, the Eastern Star, Ladies Literary League and the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Abilene.
Louise is survived by her daughter Terri E. Hudson and husband Steve of Wichita, Kansas; one son, Gregory D. Garten and wife Debbie of Lebanon, Oregon; Five grandchildren, Amanda, Aaron, Jeff, Kyle and Joel; Three Great-Grandchildren; one brother, Pete Hampton and wife Betty of Abilene and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and loving husband Alvin.
Funeral Services for Louise will be 10:00 A.M., Thursday, January 28, 2016 at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home with Pastor Ron Bowell officiating. Her final resting place will be in the Abilene City Cemetery. Family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7-8:30 P.M. at the funeral home. The family of Louise Garten suggests memorials be given in her name to the Red Bud Lake Memorial Fund. Ralph W. Snyder
97, passed away Saturday, January 23rd, in Abilene. He was born December 1, 1918 in northern Dickinson County, the son of Herman and Mildred (Fouse) Snyder. Growing up in the area, Ralph attended local schools and graduated from Dickinson County High School in Chapman with the class of 1937. In 1943 he was drafted into the Army Air Corps and retired from the Air Force in 1965 as a Lieutenant Colonel. On July 17, 1954 Ralph married Lucille Patterson in Ontario, California. They made their home in Azusa, California until retiring in 1965 and moving back to Dickinson county to buy a farm near Talmage in 1969. In 1997 they moved to Abilene. Lucille preceded him in death March 7, 1998. Ralph enjoyed his travels to over 60 countries, raising Simmental cattle and supporting the Talmage Community. He is also preceded in death by a sister, Avis Lane and a brother, Estel Snyder. Ralph was a member of the Talmage United Methodist Church, American Legion, V.F.W., Lions Club, Prairiedale Cemetery Board, CO-OP, and 4-H Community Leaders.
Survived by: 2 nieces, cousins and a host of friends
Ralph had requested cremation. A memorial service will be held 10:00 AM Friday, January 29th, at the Talmage United Methodist Church with Rev. Ken Stout officiating. IOWA CITY, Iowa — Carolyn “Darlene” Goodfriend, 91, of Iowa City, died Friday, Jan. 22, 2016. She was the third child born to Herbert Delano Essig and Grace Emily Markley Essig on Dec. 31, 1924, on the family farm north of Bennington, Kan. Preceding her in death were her husband, Joe Goodfriend, and siblings, June Babcock, Margaret Breazeale and Herbert Issac Essig.
Darlene is survived by her daughters, Caryn Patton (Jack), of Montgomery, Texas, and Emily Schiefer (Bill), of Iowa City; grandsons, Jon and Luke Schiefer and Mike Patton (Tomoko); and four great-grandchildren, Ben, Alec and Cate Schiefer and Mitchel Patton.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at Bennington Cemetery, Bennington. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Bennington Cemetery to perpetuate the Memorial Day recognition of all veterans and may be directed to Bennington Cemetery, P.O.
