vet_ffffff3620204_wlppNORMAN RETTIG, 81 died March 7, 2016 at Medicalodge in Clay Center, KS. He was born on December 1, 1934 in Hanover, KS, the son of Martin and Hilda (Allerheilgen) Rettig.  Norman was raised in the Hanover community and graduated from Hanover High School.  He served in the US Air Force from 1953 to 1957.  Norman married Mary Lou Croan on June 21, 1959.  They made their home in Nebraska while Norman worked for Allied Chemical.  They moved to Clay Center where Norman owned and operated Rettig Oil Company until his retirement.  He was a member of the American Legion and St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he served on the church trustee board as secretary and chairman.  Norman was a volunteer for the Clay Center Fire Department, Chief of the Clay County Rural Fire Department and was head of the sideline chain gang for CCCHS football games.  He was preceded in death by Mary Lou on January 27, 2015, his parents, two brothers, Orville and Merlin and a sister in law, Lula Croan.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 11, 2016 at 10:30 AM at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clay Center, KS.

Officiating the service will be Pastor Paul Tessaro.

Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery, Clay Center, KS.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2016 from 3-8PM at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church or Clay County Rural Fire Department and can be sent in care of the funeral home.

Anna “Carol” Little, 86, passed away Thursday March 3rd, 2016 at Heritage Health Care, Chanute KS. She was born July 19th, 1929 to Rex and Beulah McKibben in Ponca City, OK.

Carol was united in marriage to Jack Wesley Little September 19th 1948 in Winfield, KS. She was a beloved mother to their two children, Jacqueline and Michael. As a family they enjoyed life in many states throughout the Midwest with travel for Jack’s construction job. Carol is remembered as a dedicated homemaker and caretaker for her family. Carol enjoyed and appreciated many of the finer points in life and the world with bird watching, reading books, opera, puzzles, crosswords, games with grandkids, being outdoors-minus the snakes, and a morning cup of coffee.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband; Jack W. in 1999, daughter; Jacqueline A. Blasor in 1985 and brother; Lloyd V. McKibben 1978.

Carol is survived by her son; Michael (Karla) Little of Chanute, four grandchildren; Nikki of Lawrence, Amy of Lawrence, Brian (Kristen) Little of Bonner Springs and Jason Blasor of Parsons; two great grandchildren; Austin and Hailey of Bonner Springs, two sisters; Sylvia (Nolan) Jackson of Wichita and Marilyn Harter of Bern and several nieces and nephews.

Carol was cremated and a memorial service will held at 1:00pm, Thursday, March 10, 2016 at Roselawn Heights Memorial Chapel, 1920 E Crawford Salina. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park next to Jack. Reception will follow.

Marietta Laverne “Mickey” Siverling, 79, of Salina, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2016. Marietta was born Jan. 31, 1937, in Saline County to Lawrence “Short” and Minnie (Abrams) Reed.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Harold Reed.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Siverling; her children, David (Loretta) Perkinson, Larry Perkinson, and Shelly (Steve) Grandy, all of Salina, Michael Siverling, of Chicago, and Wayne (Sherie) Siverling, of Wichita Falls, Texas; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Bonita (Jerry) Pedersen; a sister-in-law, Margie Reed; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, at Ryan Mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 6-8.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at First Christian Church. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Accessible Home Health Care.

vet_ffffffHoward Thomas Spencer, Sr. passed away March 6, 2016, at the age of 93.

Howard was born in Concordia KS on March 5, 1923, to M. Ernest and Lillie B. McCall Spencer. Howard lived in Concordia until enrolling at Kansas State Agricultural College (now KSU) in 1941. He left school to enlist in the U.S. Army following the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Howard married Celia V. Ward on August 19, 1944. They celebrated 66 years together before Celia passed away in May 2011. After being discharged in 1946, he took up farming before changing careers to serve over 30 years as a USPS rural mail carrier in Clyde KS.

Survivors are his children, Susan (Larry) Smith, Topeka, Howard Jr. (Melba) Peachtree City GA; granddaughters, Dawn Frey, Cori (Michael) Bird, Nicole (Tim) Purtill, and Megan (JP) Barbee; great-grandchildren, Isaac and Erinn Bird; brother, James and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, 325 W 6th Street, Concordia KS 66901.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia KS.

Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, Topeka, is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Arbor Day Foundation and Trinity Presbyterian Church, sent in care of Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614.

Elden K. Nelson, age 88, died Tues., March 8, 2016 at Sunset Nursing Home, Concordia, KS. He was born on June 26, 1927 in Rural Concordia to Edwin O. & Frances (Parson) Nelson.

Elden graduated from Concordia High School. He married Anita Larsen on Sept. 19, 1953 at The Baptist Church, Concordia. Elden was a lifelong area resident, farmer and mail carrier. He retired from the postal service in 2005 after carrying mail for 42 years.

He is survived by his wife, Anita; daughter, Deanna Garlow (Don), & son, Scott Nelson (Barbara); brothers, Carl “Sam” (Regina) & Darrell (Mary Dean); sister in law, Norma Nelson; grandchildren; Dena Benfer (DeVon), Stacie LaBarge (Nathan), Michael Nelson (Marissa) & Daniel Garlow (Bailey) all of Concordia & grandchildren, Brooke Nelson (Lionel Busgith), Vista, CA & Alison Nitti (Johnny), Virginia Beach, VA; sister, Ramona Dibley, Modesto, CA & great grandchildren, Drew, Davin & Danner Benfer; Creighton Nelson; Dodger Nitti; Brady LaBarge & Cora & Maxwell Garlow.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, LaVerne; sisters, Arlene Fredrickson & Leola Doyen.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Mon., March 14, 2016 at Concordia Wesleyan Church with Rev. David Redmond officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia. Visitation will be from 12-8 pm with family greeting friends from 4-5 pm Sun., March 13, 2016 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials to Concordia Wesleyan Church or Sunset Nursing Home in care of the funeral home.
