Robert-Nelson-1459782017Robert LeRoy “Bob” Nelson, 73, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Saturday, March 26th, at St. Francis Select Specialty Hospital, Wichita, Kansas.

Bob was born in Salina, Kansas on February 19, 1943, son of the late Ethel (Snook) and Floyd Nelson.

He graduated from Solomon High School in 1961 and was a member of the Solomon High School Alumni. Bob was a volunteer fireman for the Solomon Fire Department. He worked for International Milling before going to work for Westinghouse/Philips Lighting. In 1988, Bob went to Holland for 3 months to train for Phillips. He retired after 43 years. Bob loved to remodel. He could do every aspect of the remodel from plumbing, electrical, and woodworking. He was an ace of all trades. Harvest was his favorite time of year. He took time off from Phillips to work for Swenson Farms during harvest time. He was a great father and loved spending time with his family.

He was the husband of Sharon (Bassett) Nelson.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Nelson of the home; two sons, Robert L. Nelson II, and Christine Waddle, of Salina, Kansas; Steven F. Nelson, and wife Pam, of Hutchinson, Kansas; brother, Phil Nelson and wife Linda of Salina, Kansas. He is also survived by grandchildren, Samantha, Kristan, and Connor; great-grandchildren; Aleeah and Adilyn as well as many extended family members.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter, Diana Nelson.

Cremation has been chosen. The family will receive friends for visitation Friday, April 8, 2016 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warriors or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in care of Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home, 500 S. Ohio, Salina, Kansas 67401.

vet_ffffffTroy Dean “Dink” O’Neal, 66, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 3:30 a.m., Sunday, April 3rd, 2016 surrounded by family, at his home.

Troy was born in Sulphur, Oklahoma on December 7, 1949, a son of Leta Murle (Wells) and Troy Ernest O’Neal.

Troy attended Washington Grade School and Sulphur Middle School and graduated from Sulphur High School, Sulphur, Oklahoma in 1969.

He was a member of Assembly of God of Sulpher, Oklahoma.

Troy honorably served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He started with the Army National Guard from 1969 to 1971 and U.S. Navy from 1971 to 1975 and then served in the Navel Reserve from 1977 to 1979.

Troy worked as a Project Supervisor for Hahner Foreman Harness Construction Company and later for Walz Harman Huffman Construction Company both of Wichita, Kansas.

He enjoyed his family, KU and Shocker Basketball, old western television shows and many trips to the lake camping and fishing.

Troy Dean O’Neal was united in marriage to G. Kay Brucker on August 8 1975 at the Canton United Methodist Church, Canton, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together San Pedro, California during Troy’s service then moved to Norman, Oklahoma for a year prior to moving to McPherson County.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of over forty years, Kay O’Neal, of McPherson, Kansas; his daughters, Chelsea Morris and her husband Davin, of Valley Center, Kansas and Ashley O’Neal, of Overland Park, Kansas; his brother, Lewie O’Neal, of Ardmore, Oklahoma; his two grandchildren, Abram Morris and Piper Morris; his mother-in-law, Mary E. Brucker of McPherson, Kansas; nieces and nephews, Hunter York, Brook Stetler, Harrison York, Eric York, Harper York, Hayden York, Amber York, Kristen Jackson, Ryan O’Neal, and Jennifer Wessmiller; other relatives and a host of friends.

Troy was preceded in death by his parents, Leta and Troy O’Neal.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday, April 7, 2016 from 5 to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Glidden – Ediger Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held at Glidden – Ediger Chapel, McPherson, Kansas, at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 8th, 2016 with Reverend Tom Mayse officiating.

The final resting place will be at the Canton Township Cemetery, Canton, Kansas with military honors presented by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715 and American Legion Post 24, both of McPherson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Homecare of Reno County and they can be sent in care of The Glidden – Ediger Funeral Home; 222 West Euclid Street; McPherson, Kansas 67460.

Hillsboro – Mary Jane Herbel, 72, died April 3, 2016 at Her residence in Hillsboro.  She was born January 17, 1944 in Cedar Point to Samuel and Rachel (Winter) Keller.  She worked as a nurse at Salem Home.  She married Ron Herbel July 8, 1960 in Hillsboro at Zion Lutheran Church.  Survivors include: spouse, Ron Herbel of Hillsboro; sons, Rick (Angela) of Newton, Randy Herbel of Ellsworth; daughters, Diana (Tim) Howell of Hillsboro, Janet (Gary) Kado of Sublette, Judy Hollingshead of Ellis, KS; 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.  Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 7, 2016 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hillsboro officiated by Rev. Clark M. Davis, Vicar John Werner, Rev. Aaron Filipek.  Family will receive guests from 5 to 7 on Wednesday at Jost Funeral in Hillsboro.  Memorials to Zion Lutheran Church in care of Jost Funeral Home P.O. Box 266 Hillsboro, KS 67063.

3646919Florence “Babe” Hoover, 95, of Greenleaf, KS, died Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m., April 23, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Greenleaf.

Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

She was born September 25, 1920, the youngest child of George and Gertrude (Esslinger) Wurtz, at St Mary’s, KS. When she was three years old her family moved to Clifton, where she attended country school for seven years, finishing all eight grades.

Babe received her first Holy Communion and Confirmation in St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Clifton. In 1937, she graduated from Clifton High School.

On September 25, 1939, she was united in marriage to Michael L Hoover at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Clifton. They moved to Kansas City, MO, where Mike attended radio and television school. When Mike joined the Navy, Babe worked as a secretary and bookkeeper at the Farmer’s Coop Elevator for six years. On September 25, 1949, they adopted a baby boy, Robert “Beau” Hoover, he died of cancer on October 17, 1965.

Babe worked as a licensed stock broker from 1969 thru 1976. She joined Mike’s Dance Band as a drummer from 1969 thru 1976. She was very active in the church, thirteen years in various offices of the Altar Society, Deanery offices, Cemetery and Church Council, taught C.C.D. classes for twenty-seven years, and served as a lector many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mike on December 16, 2001; son, Beau Hoover; brothers, Gerald Wurtz and Paul Wurtz; sisters, Rose Perott, Geraldine Racette, Alice Schumaker, Laura Steen, and Matilda Talbot.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

A memorial fund is established to Sacred Heart Catholic Masses or to her great niece’s foundation for metastatic breast cancer, the Cancer Couch Foundation, PO Box 1145, Southport, CT 06890. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington.
