Norma devoted her career to education. According to her, “education is the training of the mind for Great Thinking”. and “writing is simply the process for the refinement and dissemination of Great Thinking”. Many, many bright and talented students learned to write through immersion in Norma’s philosophical maxim, “There is no good writing; there is only good rewriting”. Many of her students went on to pursue writing careers of merit in journalism, publishing and other areas of public communications. To her great Joy, many of her students remained in touch with her and became beloved friends through the rest of her life.

Norma taught Journalism at Buhler High 1968-1971 then joined McPherson College as a teacher and Director of Publicity from 1971-1976. In 1976 she became Assoc. Her achievements lead her to be listed in Who’s Who editions: In The World, Contemporary Journalists 1977, Personalities of the West and Midwest 1979 and The World’s Who’s Who of Women in Education.

Second only to serving and educating others was Norma’s dedication to writing. Her own published works included books: Virginia Colonials and their Maryland Relatives, Clearfield Co. Baltimore and Fledgling Eagle: Captain William Tucker and the New World Colony Library Research LRC, Monroe, NY. and dozens of articles, papers and poems published in over 80 books, magazines, journals, reviews , and papers.

In addition to her contributions to her family and career, Norma was deeply committed to her Christian Spiritual Faith and it’s directives to practice charity and service. She lived her faith on all levels as an active member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, McPherson, KS. and it’s “Minister’s Scholarship Board” She served on the McPherson County Hospital Board of Directors and The McPherson County Health Foundation Board of Directors. Norma served the public as a member of the KPTS-Kansas Public Television Board of Directors for 11 years and as Chairperson of for another 3 years. 6400961_220wHenry Diaz Martinez Sr., 81, of Salina, danced into Heaven, May 21, 2016. He was born July 20, 1934 in Stamford, TX.

Henry was a loyal employee of J.S. Frank Construction for 20 years, as a heavy equipment operator. Henry and Dolores purchased, owned, and operated Dallas Cleaners for 38 years, providing first rate service for their clientele.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents, Refugio and Angela (Diaz)Martinez. His brothers, Joe and Manuel Martinez and his sister, MaryMartinez, all of whom he loved and cherished.

Henry loved and cherished his wife, Dolores, of 62 years very deeply.Henry and Dolores raised 3 daughters, Linda, Debbie, Hope, and one son,Henry Jr. The father Henry strived to be, loved his family with all of his heart, so much, that the thought of his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren made his heart ache with love, pride, and joy.

Henry danced his way through life with his cherished, Dolores. Their dancing was a sight to behold by all who had the pleasure of watching them. While dancing, they appeared to be floating on air. One of the things always mentioned by anyone who knew them is the memory of watching Dolores and Henry dance as if they were in a world of their own, filled with love.

He worked hard, his entire life, to provide and care for his wife, children, and grandchildren. He did this with a passion which they will each continue to carry as they live their lives and fulfill their destinies. He was counted on to offer advice, acceptance, and unconditional love; which he never grew tired of sharing.

Henry’s sense of humor was shared with all that came to know him. He could be counted on to have a smile on his face, an ornery twinkle in his eye, and a shared conversation that filled the air with smiles, laughter, and joy.

Henry and Dolores gave the gifts of wisdom, strength, and the ability to share love. It was, and is, their hope that these gifts will be forever remembered and that each of their loved ones continue to pass these on. He will be cherished and greatly missed.

Judy LutzJudith Elaine Lutz, 70, of Montgomery, TX, and formerly of McPherson, passed away at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 6th, 2016 peacefully while in the company of family members, at Conroe Regional Medical Center, Houston, Texas.

Judith Elaine “Judy” Lutz, the daughter of Daniel J. and Erlene Mildred (Friesen) Borth, was born on December 6, 1945 at McPherson, Kansas. She was one of seven children born to this union, Carol, Mary, Judy, Anne, Barbara, Clark, and Michael. She was baptized and became a member of the Grace Lutheran Church. She attended the McPherson schools and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson, Kansas in 1963. She was united in marriage to George R. Lutz for 20 years. Judy had a full and interesting life. She carried the Borth family trait of being honest, hard working and of strong will. Always giving her all in every situation or job she held. With only a high school degree, Judy would excel in her life. She had an early career as an electrician being promoted to Group Leader for Road Ranger, a travel trailer company. She was hired with Sterling Drug, a pharmaceutical company and started as an hourly employee but soon worked her way up to become a Supervisor. She was a great mentor and friend to all of her coworkers. After her leave from Sterling Drug, she moved to Illinois where she worked for a dental office where she was introduced to her husband George. They began vacationing in Florida and loved it so much they took up residency and lived there for 17 years. Judy enjoyed keeping busy and could never seem to fully retire. After a couple different part time jobs she acquired a position with a maxillofacial/oral surgeon for many years. At times, she would assist with procedures. Attempting retirement again didn’t last long. Through her neighbor and good friend she returned to work part time at Home Equity Realty.
Judy loved entertaining and was a master in the kitchen. She was truly a gracious hostess. She was deemed by her siblings to be the queen of making Bean Dumplings, a traditional family recipe her mother made often as a Saturday meal. During holidays she was always baking goodies, making candies, caramels, fudge and poppy seed bread. Along with baking, she could fry chicken as well as her mother did and her chicken noodle soup was the best ever made.
Judy’s husband helped her to overcome her fear of water. She learned how to swim and even enjoyed the chance to go snorkeling. Judy could often be found in her back yard enjoying her pool and her turtles, “Tina and the Triplets”. Not only did she learn to swim, she also took line dancing lessons. She became a master at her moves. She and her husband enjoyed dancing on a Saturday night.
Judy loved music and was also an avid reader. She would often be reading 2 or 3 murder mystery books at a time. Music was always playing in more than one room as well as outside in her garage, where she spent many a day with numerous neighbors stopping by for a visit. Her freezer was always full of ice cream treats for her neighborhood “grandkids”. Judy began container gardening as well. She grew tomatoes, cucumbers and many herbs. There were numerous pineapple plants she started and avocados as well right beside her beloved Foxtail Palm tree. Judy had a natural talent for home decorating. Her home was a beautiful, inviting place to be. She was known to move things around in a home where she would be visiting for a better visual.
Judy lived in Kansas, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Illinois and Florida. She traveled to Germany and Italy. Of all these places, Florida was her favorite. She loved the tropical flora, the beautiful birds, beaches and most of all, the warm weather.
Judy was a loving daughter, mother, wife, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend. She always had a warm smile and hug for those around her.

ThumbnailArchie Milton Edgell was born April 13, 1925 in Rural Gove County, Kansas to Vernon and Rilla (Brockway) Edgell. May 20, 2016 surrounded by family, holding Charlene’s hand, with his great-grandson, Evan, patting his whiskers and giving wet kisses, Archie left this world peacefully.

As we remember Archie, the things that come to mind are his strong character traits, his dedication to family and his church. At a young age Archie learned how to work. He was supporting his family as a teenager. This hard work carried him through life, passing it on to his children, nephews and grandsons. His sons remember when they wanted a day off, Archie let them know that being self-employed didn’t offer that luxury too often. He just told them, “If I don’t get my head off the pillow we don’t eat!” That was Archie.

Archie and Charlene Maupin were married November 19, 1960 in Hill City. As a family man, Archie began gathering relatives together for the “Edgell Reunions”. These are continuing today not only in Kansas, but also Oklahoma, Utah and Washington. With his family and friends, camping and water skiing brought lots of stories: boat flooding and bailing water, running into a sand bar and all those skiing lessons. Archie was always up early at the lake as he had to be the first one on the water “to stir it up.”

Archie could always be counted on to help others, whether it was moving day, repairs to homes or tragedies. This also carried on to his church mission. He would go to help victims of fires and floods, and trips to Mexico and Honduras; building churches, working circles around the younger men.

Archie will be remembered with love by all who knew him. We will never forget his infectious smile, his overalls, and the dash of his truck covered with fig newtons, licorice, Planter’s peanuts, and rattlesnake rattles. He had many “isms”. Some of them were his love for coffee, naps after lunch, reading and collecting National Geographic Magazines. His CB handle was “9 Nails” because he had planed off one pinky finger.

Archie lived his life as a carpenter and family man. He took pride in his craft and his family. His generosity, work ethic, humility and selflessness were his greatest qualities that he would want us to aspire to. Rest in the arms of the Lord, Archie. Well done, good and faithful servant.

She attended Center Hill school through the eighth grade. She attended Randolph High School where she graduated in 1937. During high school Lucile played on the basketball team. She continued to love sports throughout her life.
Lucile’s mother died when Lucile was thirteen years old. That was a very difficult time for her. Her sister, Ella, who was ten years older became the keeper of the home. Lucile didn’t like it when Ella would say, “I’m a day older, so you need to listen to me.”

Creek Church parsonage, Riley County. He and three brothers had a wheat farm in Ottawa County west of Oak Hill, Kansas. Albert and Lucile began their married life there. Later they built a new home. They lived on the farm until 1989 when they retired and moved to Miltonvale. After Albert’s death in 1996, Lucile sold the home and moved into an apartment. Then in 2007, she moved to Park Villa Nursing Home.
Lucile loved to garden, work on the farm, and raise chickens. The Lord Jesus Christ and church were very important to her. She and Albert first attended Antioch, a country church in Ottawa County, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and Bible School teacher among other things. After its closing, they attended F.C. Hill Memorial Wesleyan Church in Miltonvale where she served as treasurer for fifteen years and as a Sunday School teacher.
Lucile served as a school board member for Union School, a country school just east of their farm. Albert and Lucile played games with their neighbors and enjoyed Senior Citizens after they moved to Miltonvale. They delighted in family. They had no children but loved their nieces and nephews and often had them stay with them. Lucile also continued her family tradition of popcorn and pop on Sunday nights with family that could come.

The Proverbs writer reminds us that a woman of noble character is worth far more than earthly riches; she speaks with wisdom, watches over her family, and her children call he blessed. Shirley was a blessing in her daily life to family and friends alike. A woman of faith, hope, and love, her strength and noble character continually showed us that the greatest of these is love.

5751bb4840f66Council Grove -Elizabeth Ann Koegeboehn, 85, of Council Grove, Kansas passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at Diversicare of Council Grove.

She was born November 17, 1930 in Aulne, Kansas, the daughter of Clee and Tressie (Blankley) Ford. She graduated from Marion High School.  Elizabeth married Melvin Koegeboehn on April 8, 1951, in Marion. They moved to Council Grove in 1955.  They had three sons: Tracy, Daryl and Steven.

Elizabeth enjoyed staying at home and caring for her family.  She was devoted to Daryl when he became blind at the age of 7.  She learned braille so she could help him with his homework. After he graduated from high school in 1975, Elizabeth drove Daryl to Herington or Hope on weekday mornings to meet a bus that would take him to Salina for work at OCCK.  Then she would pick him up each afternoon.  When Daryl was no longer able to work at OCCK, she cared for him at home until his passing in 1984.

Elizabeth, or “Aunt Beth”, as some of her family fondly called her, so enjoyed her volunteer work.  Her musical talents were enjoyed by so many over the years. She played the piano at the nursing home and the Senior Center, and the piano and organ at church. Mel carried her portable piano to their Kiwanis meetings every week so she could play for them.  There wasn’t usually an old-time hymn that one could stump Elizabeth on.  She could play the songs by heart as she looked around the room or the congregation, never missing a note.  Elizabeth also played the piano for many weddings and funerals.

Her love of volunteering continued throughout her life as secretary, board member and other duties at Care and Share, and secretary for the Senior Center.  She especially loved the Kiwanis as she was secretary for the local club for more than 20 years. Among the many volunteer awards earned in Kiwanis were Kiwanian of the Year in 2000 and the George F. Hixson Fellow award in 2002.  Elizabeth also served on the election board for many years.

Elizabeth is a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church.  She loved her church work and was quite good at crafts. She was in charge of crafts for Vacation Bible School and Ladies Guild projects.

As with any mother and grandmother, family was especially important.  Throughout her life, Elizabeth enjoyed going to her sons’ and grandsons’ events and many Ford family and Koegeboehn family reunions. Her family and friends will always remember Elizabeth as one of the kindest and caring persons ever known, especially her smile and giggle.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents.  She was the youngest of 7 brothers and sisters.  Brothers: William, Jerome, Dalphas, and Leslie; sisters: Ruby and Fern; and son Daryl. She now has joined them all in heaven.

Elizabeth is survived by her husband Mel, of the home; sons, Tracy and wife Kim of Council Grove, and Steve and wife Judy of Wichita; grandsons: Ryan Pickett of Manhattan,  Michael and Justin Koegeboehn of Wichita, and many extended family.

A visitation for family and friends will be held at Zeiner Funeral Home in Council Grove on Sunday, June 5, 2016, from 5 – 7.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, June 6th, at Calvary Lutheran Church, 715 East Main, Council Grove.  Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Calvary Lutheran Church, Care and Share or Council Grove Senior Center.

ThumbnailDale Robert Dohe passed away Sunday, June 5, 2016 at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 79. He was born on February 11, 1937 in Ellsworth, Kansas, along with his twin brother Dean Arthur, to the late Benjamin Walter and Amanda Marie (Walker) Dohe. Amanda passed away in October 1942 when the boys were only 5 years old. Benjamin later married Dorothea Wacker in January 1949.

Dale grew up working on the family farm with his brother, near Bullfoot Creek, in Lincoln County, Kansas. He graduated from Vesper High School in Vesper, Kansas with the Class of 1955 and often had school friends helping with the farm work. He was married to Kay Bolte and together they had a daughter, Norma. On August 6, 1966 he was united in marriage to Marlene Louise Meyers in Stockton, Kansas. They were blessed with four children, Darin, Tonya, Kimberly, and Colleen.

Along with farming, Dale did dirt construction, before going to work for Prickett Trucking hauling cattle. He also drove truck for Schult Homes, delivering manufactured and modular homes, with Marlene driving the pilot car. Later the family worked doing custom harvesting, for a little over 5 years, until Dale’s retirement in 2006. He enjoyed coyote hunting and fishing whenever possible. He was an avid baseball fan and very talented player, having turned down the opportunity to play professional ball as a young man, because dad needed him to stay on the farm. He cheered for the Kansas City Royals, and always loved cheering even more for his grandkids at their sports and school activities.

Dale is survived by his wife Marlene Dohe of the home in Plainville; son Darin Dohe and wife Valerie of Plainville; daughters Norma Kobbeman and husband Jeff of Lincoln, Tonya Bethel of Plainville, Kimberly Houser of Plainville, and Colleen Wilkerson of Plainville; brothers Larry Dohe and wife Sharon of Lincoln, and Wayne Dohe and wife Dorene of Lincoln; sister Karen Dohe of Lincoln; grandchildren Mitchell Kobbeman, Ashton Kobbeman, Katelin Dohe, Dylan Dohe, Sterling Dohe, Tiffany Bethel, Tate Bethel, Tristan Houser, Trever Houser, Brianna Houser, Willie Wilkerson, and Reagan Wilkerson; and great-grandchildren Emily Huehl, and Lexi Plante.

He was preceded in death by his parents Benjamin and Amanda Dohe, step-mother Dorothea Burmeister, and brother Dean Dohe.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at the First Christian Church in Plainville. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00-8:00 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home. Family will receive friends from 6:00-7:30 pm.

Dale was a man who coupled faith with hard work, but also knew how to enjoy the fruits of his labors. Whether sharing a cold beer with friends, taking time to help neighbors, or just being with family at the end of a long day, he never grew tired of doing good; having fought the good fight, he has finished his race, kept the faith, and now rests from his labors.
