Albert Henry Facklam, 87, of rural Oakhill, Kansas, died Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Society – Minneapolis where he has resided the past few years while battling Alzheimer’s disease.

He was born on January 18, 1926, to Harold and Christine Facklam at the family farm home near Alida, Kansas. Albert was the oldest of four children. He was raised in the Alida area, and graduated from Dickinson County Community High School in Chapman with the class of 1944.

Albert married Lucille Ervin on June 11, 1950, at the Alida-Upland Church. To this union were born four children. The Facklams lived on a farm near Alida until 1963, at which time the Milford Lake project necessitated a move. They bought a farm near Oakhill, in rural Clay County. Mr. Facklam was very involved in serving the community. He served on the Oakland Township Board, the Oakhill Telephone Company board, and as an Elder at the Oakhill Presbyterian Church. He had also been involved with 4-H throughout his life, showing cattle as a youngster, helping with the construction of the Rock Springs 4-H Camp, and serving as an adult leader of the Sturdy Oak 4-H Club. Albert was always ready to lend a helping hand to his neighbors.

Mr. Facklam loved his family and life on the farm. He and Lucille were both strong advocates of education, even taking the children on the tractor across snowy fields to meet the school bus. They were proud that all four of their children graduated from college, and were interested in seeing that their grandchildren and great grandchildren receive a college education. Albert was always entertaining others with his poetry recitation, and telling the presidents and dates they served. He even learned new poems late in life, just to show that he could still learn something new. He will be greatly missed by his family.

He is survived by his son, Bert and wife Jeanie Facklam of Tescott, Kansas; three daughters, Catherine and husband Larry Harden of North Platte, Nebraska, Heidi and husband Frank Novotny of Louisville, Nebraska, and Vickie and husband Dee Short of Williamsburg, Kansas; grandchildren Brandy (Justin) Ladwig, LeighAnn and Frank Novotny, Caleb and Noah Short, Tara (Rick) Wilson, Rick (Kathy) Stein, Sara (Corey) Dilday, Sandra (Matt) Larsen, and Tad Harden; thirteen great grandchildren; brother Harold (Venice) Facklam of Junction City, Kansas; sister Wanda Sowell of Aiea, Hawaii; brother-in-law Bill (Reggie) Ervin of Bartlesville, OK; sisters-in-law Helen Ervin, Ida Ervin, Margie Ervin and Mary Ervin; nieces, nephews, and family friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 53 years, Lucille; his sister Marjorie Facklam; brothers-in-law Edgar (Irene), Ralph, Emery, Bob, and Jerry Ervin; and sister-in-law Waunetta (Oscar) Brott.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M., Monday, July 29 at the Oak Hill Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Rose Meron Cemetery, Longford. Visitation will be from 2 P.M. to 7 P.M. Sunday at the Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis where the family will receive friends from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. vet_ffffffCharles L. Kephart, 83, died Saturday, July 27, 2013. Charles was born Feb. 15, 1930, in Bennington to Lloyd and Bessie (Rehberg) Kephart.

He grew up on a farm south of Salina and attended country school until the seventh grade, at which time he transferred to the Salina school system. He graduated from Salina High School in 1948. In school, his interests were in music. He played trombone in the Salina High School band and sang in the chorus. After he graduated from high school, he attended Brown Mackie College for a year and then went to work for George Kaufman Insurance Co.

When the Korean War started in 1950, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he rose to the rank of staff sergeant. After four years in the service, he returned to Salina. Taking advantage of the G.I. Bill, he decided to get a college education. In the fall of 1954, he enrolled in Kansas Wesleyan University. It soon became apparent that he was drawn to the speech and drama department, and soon became a major player in Kansas Wesleyan’s drama department. When he graduated in 1958, the University of Kansas offered him a scholarship to continue his theatrical education. It was in graduate school that he became interested in community theater.

In 1960, he returned to Salina, where he and Jerry Cushman, then city librarian, founded the Salina Community Theatre. In the fall of 1960, Charles became the theater’s managingartistic director and for the next 35 years guided the theater’s artistic development. During that period, he directed 136 plays. From 1960 to 1970, the home of the theater was the old Washington High School on Mulberry Street. When that building was torn down, the theater performed its plays at Kansas Wesleyan until 1973 when it moved to its present location.

Her loving and compassionate nature was an example to aspire to. Cora enjoyed creating and sending personalized greeting cards, making regular visits to the homebound and helping friends in need. She looked forward to chats with her weekly morning coffee group.

Cora’s passion for genealogy contributed to creating a lasting legacy and sense of place for her family. Inseparable from her best friend and partner, Deane, she was the matriarch of a family that learned to live, love and laugh through her example. From tea parties with grandchildren to always providing a motherly refuge for her sons and daughters,

He was known for helping others and was often sought out for his sage advice. He was a doer and a thinker. Like his loving wife, Deane particularly enjoyed the fellowship of his various coffee groups.

Deane was the patriarch of a family that was taught to work, laugh and love. Among his pleasures were teaching his children and grandchildren to drive a tractor, sit on a horse, and play pitch. He was firm, but fair, and always loving. Deane, together with the love his life, Cora, forged a rare, beautiful and bountiful life of friends and family. Individually and together, they touched many lives in deep and profound ways.
