Anthony C. “Tony” Fiedler, 66, of McPherson, Kansas, surrounded by family passed away at 7:45 p.m., Tuesday, November 28th, 2017 at McPherson Hospital.
Anthony was born in Great Bend, Kansas on February 27, 1951, a son of Geraldine “Gerry” Catherine (Leiker) Fiedler and Anthony Carl Fiedler, Sr.
Tony attended the St. James Catholic School in Augusta, St. Joseph’s Catholic School, McPherson Junior High and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson, Kansas in 1969. Tony then enlisted in the United States Army with the 101st Airborne “Air Mobile” during Vietnam and honorably served his country he received the NDSM, EXP M-14, MKM M-16, VCM, VSM, Bronze Star, GCMDL, ARCOM. He then attended and graduated with his Associates of Art Degree from Hutchinson Community College, Hutchinson, Kansas and finished with his Bachelors Degree in Education from Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church McPherson, Kansas.
Tony started his teaching career in 1975 as a student teacher at McPherson Senior High School, McPherson, Kansas and taught history, political science and government; then taught at Cedar Vale High School, Cedar Vale, Kansas for 2 years and coached basketball and football, taught 2 years at Hesston Middle School and coached basketball; he owned and operated Miss Peggy’s Barbeque Restaurant in Conway, Kansas and later moved it to McPherson, Kansas; in 1988 was the Commissioner of Finance and Revenue for the City of McPherson for 18 years; and in 1991 was Vocational Director at M.C.D.S. until his retirement in 2008. He also was a substitute teacher through most of these years.
Tony was a member of the American Legion Post 24; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715; Chairman of the McPherson Recreation Commission; Board of Directors of the Kansas Work Force One; Board member of Operation Warmth; Vice President of the McPherson Scottish Society and served as Past President of the Kansas League of Municipalities; taught Flag Etiquette; and served on numerous boards and organizations through the years. Tony’s 3 greatest accomplishments were his wife and two sons. He enjoyed life to the fullest, loved music and some of his favorites were Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Johnny Lee Hooker, Johnny Cash, and Delbert McClinton to name a few, and he served his country as well as the community in which he lived, and his family and friends helped to make a great life to live.
Anthony Carl “Tony” Fiedler was united in marriage to Peggy Jean Cooke on May 25, 1974 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, McPherson, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in Emporia.
He is survived by his wife Peggy Fiedler, of McPherson, Kansas; his sons, Dylan Fiedler and his wife Jennifer, of McPherson and John Fiedler and his wife Brittney, of Olathe, Kansas; his siblings, Roger Fiedler and his wife Garnet, of McPherson, Kansas, Gail Gill and her husband Tim, of Stanley, New Mexico, Sheryl Ann Fiedler, of McPherson, Kansas, Janet Stine and her husband Dan, of Roscoe, Illinois, Ronald Fiedler and his wife Dee, of McPherson, Kansas, Gregory Fiedler, of McPherson, Kansas, Annette Fiedler, of McPherson, Kansas, Duane Fiedler, of McPherson, Kansas, and Randy Fiedler, of McPherson, Kansas; his 3 grandchildren, Trey Anthony Kenneth Fiedler, Cooper Sims Fiedler, and Giles Joshua Fiedler; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Tony Sr. and Gerry Fiedler; his sister, Kim Fiedler; and a nephew, Cullen Gill.
Friends are invited to call on Friday, December 1, 2017 from 6 to 8 p.m. with Rosary at 8:15 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, McPherson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, McPherson, Kansas, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 2nd, 2017 with Fr. Hien Nguyen officiating.
Burial will be in the McPherson Cemetery McPherson, Kansas with military honors presented by members of the American Legion Post 24 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715.
