Elbing – LaVern James Wedel was born on October 25, 1962, the son of Lester and Delila Wedel. LaVern was a gentle person who loved animals, especially the dogs and cats on the farm. He enjoyed music and was often whistling and singing as he went about his day. Caregiving was a special gift of LaVern’s. One of his virtues was patience which helped him in this work. He took care of his grandparents as their health declined and was a huge help as his parents aged as well. As a young adult, LaVern joined VS and worked on the MCC Canner. That experience held a special place in his heart. Following those years, he and his brother Lynn took a motorcycle trip across Canada, visiting many of the friends he had made during that time.
Motorcycle riding was a favorite activity in LaVern’s younger years. Many an enjoyable Sunday afternoon found him riding with the Wedel cousins. He would also take his younger siblings for rides until they were able to ride on their own. LaVern was a member of Zion Mennonite Church his whole life. He served as worship leader and enjoyed participating in Sunday School. He welcomed a good theological discussion and was not afraid to ask hard questions.
LaVern went home to be with his Savior on February 1, 2018. Those left to cherish his memory are his parents, Lester and Delila Wedel; brother Lynn and sister-in-law Kathleen Wedel; sister Rachel and brother-in-law Todd Nicholson; brother Lyle Wedel; nieces Mikayla and Marlee Nicholson; nephew Lucas Nicholson and extended family and friends.
