Phillip W. “Opa” Hanson, 73, passed away Sunday, March 18th, in Manhattan. He was born May 16, 1944 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Orvan J. and Corrinne M. (Cusick) Hanson. Growing up in Soldier, Iowa, Phil attended local schools, graduated from Soldier High School and attended Agustana College. In 1967, he married Erika G. Engel. The first half of their married life was spent following his military career before settling in Abilene. Phil was a Viet Nam and Desert Storm Army Veteran. He had been an E.M.T. and was a L.P.N. in the Army until retiring in 1997. Phil enjoyed his grandchildren and fishing. He was a volunteer at the Heritage Center and other community services. Phil was preceded in death by his parents and three grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Erika of Abilene; three daughters, Corinne (Tom) Srsen of Olympia, Washington, Phyllis (Michael) Tolzmann of Owings, Maryland, Jessica (Brian) Barton of Nine Mile Falls, Washington; a son, Rainer P. Hanson of Lake Zurich, Illinois; seven grandchildren; Sister, Cheryl Hallquist of St. Joseph, Missouri and brother, Jerry Hanson of Mesa, Arizona.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 PM Friday, March 23rd at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Dr. Keith Less officiating. The family has chosen cremation to follow. The family will receive friends 5:30 – 6:30 PM Thursday, March 22nd at the Danner funeral Home. The family suggests memorial contributions in his name be made to the Phil Hanson Memorial Fund. They may be left at the church the day of the service or left at or sent in care of the Danner Funeral Home POB 758 Abilene, Kansas 67410.
