John Edward Brady, 90, of Salina, passed peacefully on April 24, 2018, at the Presbyterian Manor with his children by his side. John was born June 28, 1927, in Kansas City, Missouri. He was the son of the late Frances and Margaret (O’Shea) Brady.
After graduating from Sacred Heart School, Salina, Class of 1945, John enlisted in the Navy and served as a Seaman on the USS Vincennes during World War II. John and Mabel married on December 2, 1950 in Salina. John began working for the Union Pacific railroad in 1950 and retired with 40 years of service, during that time worked alongside his son Mike. He was a member St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the United Transportation Union, and the VFW Post 1432. John enjoyed RV camping with Mabel, deer hunting in Wyoming with his sons and helping others by delivering groceries and supplies to those in need.
John is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years Mabel Rogene (Dickerson) Brady, sister Marie Pendergast of Troy, NY, and his son Terry Brady. He is survived by his children, John (Judy) Brady, Cheyenne, WY, Michael Brady, Atchison, KS, Steven Brady, Lawrence, KS, Gary (Robin) Brady, Smolan, KS, Janice Stein, and Chris (Kara) Brady, all of Salina, KS; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, April 26, with a vigil and rosary at 7 p.m. at Ryan Mortuary.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 27, at St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church. Father Luke Thielen will be the celebrant. An interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery and luncheon at St. Mary’s Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Church, North Central Region Special Olympics Kansas, or Salina Animal Shelter in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401.
