Roy David (Dave) Stevens, age 78, Abilene, passed away on Tuesday, June 19, 2018. He was born in Junction City, Kansas on November 28, 1939, the son of Roy Raymond and Amy Chlolene (Cox) Stevens. Both proceeded him in death.
He grew up in rural Geary County attending country schools (Kansas Falls and Acker) and graduating from Junction City High School in 1957. He had a BS and MS from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas.
Dave married Sandra Chamberlin on November 1, 1959 at the Sutphen Mill Christian Church, rural Chapman, Kansas. Most of their married life was spent in the home Dave built in rural Dickinson County on Sandra’s parents’ farm. They had four children, Timothy, Debra, Scott, and Amy. Dave was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, dearly loved by his family.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra of Abilene, Kansas, son Timothy Stevens and wife Karen of Woodbine Maryland, daughter Debra Stevens of Junction City, Kansas, son Scott Stevens and wife Christy of Abilene, Kansas, daughter Amy Wahl of Junction City, Kansas, and granddaughters Kelsey Stevens, Halee Wahl, and Peyton Wahl as well as seven step-grandchildren and three step, great-grandchildren. Dave is also survived by his sister Patsy Schultis and husband Estel of Loveland, Colorado and brother Thomas Stevens and wife Sharon of Meriden, Kansas.
Mr. Stevens (as he was fondly known) touched many lives as an elementary school teacher (Chapman Elementary, Chapman, Kansas, Morris Hill Elementary, Fort Riley, Kansas, Milford Elementary, Milford, Kansas, and Westwood Elementary, Junction City, Kansas), as well as customers at RHV Do-It-Best, and as a Title 1 math aide at Garfield Elementary and Eisenhower Elementary, Abilene, Kansas.
Dave was a member of the Chapman I.O.O.F. Lodge and Abilene Lion’s Club. He was also a member of the Sutphen Mill Christian Church where he previously played the organ and served as an elder, board member, board chairman, Sunday School secretary, and treasurer. Dave volunteered at the Abilene Public Library delivering books to the Abilene Senior Center and visited residents at the Chapman Valley Manor.
His hobbies included woodworking, lawn and gardening work, and fieldwork on the farm. His favorite things were his tractors, reading, music of most kinds (but especially jazz), and Kansas.
Visitation will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 22, at Danner Funeral Home in Abilene, Kansas. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 23 at Danner Funeral Home with Pastor Greg Schmidt officiating. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kansas Kids in Crisis and the Chapman Valley Manor. They may be left at or sent in care of the Danner Funeral Home, P.O. Box 758, Abilene, Kansas 67410.
