Phyllis Marie Flaherty, 85, of Salina, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014. She was born April 26, 1929, in Arnold, the daughter of Henry and Cathryn (Sargeant) Ummel.
Phyllis graduated from Arnold High School and attended Fort Hays State University, earning her teaching certificate. She taught school in several western Kansas schools before moving to Salina. She attended Kansas Wesleyan University while teaching full time. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education and music in 1968 and completed her master’s degree in 1974 from Kansas State University. Phyllis taught fourth grade at Bennington Grade School for more than 20 years.
She was a member of University United Methodist Church. She enjoyed cooking, canning and quilting.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Flaherty, in 1989, and one brother, Ralph.
Survivors include a son, Duane; daughter, Jolene; granddaughter, Kylee; three brothers, Donald, Kenneth and Marvin; and three sisters, Evelyn Clark, Mildred Fink and Eunice Ummel.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today, with family greeting visitors from 6-8, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Ryan Mortuary.
