wil50725Douglas E. Wilson, 74, of Salina, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2015. He was born Feb. 7, 1941, in Battle Mountain, Nev., to Delbert and Avis (King) Wilson.

He married Carmen Crosswy on April 4, 1964, in Salina.

Doug was a member of American Legion Riders, Shrine, Blue Lodge, American Legion, St. John’s Lutheran Church, and Kansas National Guard pistol team. In his spare time, he enjoyed riding horses and motorcycles and being a part of Salina cowboy reinactment.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Carmen, of the home; children, Matthew Wilson, of Abilene, Jeffrey Wilson and wife Tracie Paylor Wilson, of Lee’s Summit, Mo., and Margaret Hucksoll and husband Kenneth, of McPherson; grandchildren, Roxanne Wilson, Morgan Wilson and Grace Hucksoll; brother, Bill Wilson, of Canyon Lake, Texas; and sister, Joann Estes and husband Werner, of Battle Mountain.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 30, at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Inurnment will follow in Gypsum Hill Cemetery with McConnell Air Force Base Honor Guard.

smi50725Harold “Joe” Smith, 85, of Ellsworth and formerly of Salina, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2015. He was born March 1, 1930, in Bogue to K.B. and Caroline Smith. He attended school in Solomon.

He worked in construction and retired from Salina Building Systems. He enjoyed being outdoors and was an avid fisherman.

Joe married Betty Nichols-Smith on June 11, 1955. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Joe is survived by his wife, Betty, of the home; daughters, Pamela Soukup and husband Jim, of Ellsworth, Penny Weis, of Salina, and Patti Thomes and husband Chris, of Overland Park; grandchildren, Steven Weis, Ashley Weis, Cody Soukup and Madison Thomes; and great-grandchildren, Bailey Weis, Blaine Shenk, Lexus Sheets and Taylor Sheets.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Irene Jones; and brothers, Leo, Jessie and Charley Smith.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 29, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, with family present from 5:30-6 at the mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Heart Association, in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401.

MiriamFranceMiriam Arlene France, 88, of Hope, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2015 at Brookdale Assisted Living Center in Salina. She was born May 19, 1927 in Carlton, the daughter of Arthur and Elsie (Ott) Walker. She grew up in the Hope area and graduated from Hope High School.

She was united in marriage to Lloyd France on June 6, 1950 in Abilene. He preceded her in death May 15, 1993.

Miriam and Lloyd owned and operated Lloyds Food Store in Hope for nearly 20 years, selling the store in 1977. She also was a school cook for Hope for many years. She was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church, and was actively involved in the community with UMW, EHU, Lion’s Club, Ladies Auxiliary, Homebuilders, Hope Community Historical Association, numerous committees, and enjoyed playing cards regularly with her group of friends.

Miriam is survived by her daughter, Darylene Hatfield and husband Rick of Miltonvale, Kansas and a son, Rodney France and wife Betty of Edmond, Oklahoma. Six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. One brother, Warren Walker and wife Lou of Wichita. She was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband Lloyd, one brother, Wallace Walker, a sister, Fern Gantenbein, and an infant sister, Carol Walker.

Funeral services for Miriam will be 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at the United Methodist Church in Hope with Pastor Don Alt officiating. Burial will follow at the Hope City Cemetery.

1641_Stoffer,Pauline_2015-07-23Pauline M. Stoffer, 86, passed away Thursday, July 23rd, in Wamego. She was born August 9, 1928, near Carlton the daughter of Howard M. and Justina M. (Schwarz) Beetch.

Growing up in the area, Pauline attended local schools, graduating from Abilene High School with the class of 1946.

On January 27, 1952, she was married to Glen E. Stoffer. Most all of their married life was spent farming north of Detroit. In 2010 they moved to Abilene and then to Wamego in 2012. Pauline enjoyed spending time with her grand and great grandchildren, raising her family on the farm and working outdoors. She was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, HPG Club, Dickinson County Farm Bureau and had met Glen in the Dickinson County Rural Life Association.

Pauline was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and Willard Beetch.

3259194_wlppCarol Maurich, 51, passed away on July 25, 2015. She was born January 18, 1964 in Tacoma, Washington to Karl Langenback and Judy Klassen. She was raised in Allentown, Pa. Carol lived in Miltonvale for many years.

She married Christopher Maurich on October 21, 1990. They made their home in Wakefield, Ks. She worked as a cook and a bartender for several area businesses. Carol enjoyed riding her motorcycle across the states before becoming sick with Rheumatoid arthritis and becoming paralyzed in 2014.

Carol was a life member of ABATE Kansas and was a former Board Member of ABATE. She also was with Motorcycle Riders Foundation. Carol enjoyed being with family and friends and always enjoyed having her grandchildren around. Carol’s favorite holiday was the 4th of July and enjoyed having family and friends at the lake for her annual 4th of July BBQ. She will be sadly missed by many friends.

She is preceded in death by her father and grandson.

Juanita LandrumJuanita C. Landrum, 79, of McPherson, Kansas, went to be with her Lord at 11:17 a.m., Saturday, July 25th, 2015 with her husband by her side, at McPherson Hospital.

Juanita was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma on September 11, 1935, a daughter of Fannie Mae (Sevier) Stillwell and James Austin Bruner.

Juanita attended Douglas grade school, Checotah, Oklahoma, and graduated from Rentiesville High School, Rentiesville, Oklahoma in 1953.

Juanita was a charter member of Morningstar Missionary Baptist Church McPherson, Kansas.

Juanita was a homemaker and she took great pride in providing for her family in this manner, she also worked as a private home cleaning lady, worked at Peter Pan and worked for U.S.D. 418 at McPherson Junior High School as a lunchroom cashier.

Juanita was a member of the O.C.A.W. union. She enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling, playing bingo, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends.

Juanita C. Bruner was united in marriage to Leonard R. Landrum on May 14, 1955 at Checotah, Oklahoma. The young couple established their first home together in Checotah. Later that year they moved to McPherson, Kansas.

Juanita is survived by her loving and devoted husband of over 60 years, Leonard Landrum, of McPherson, Kansas; her son, Leonard W. Landrum, of McPherson, Kansas; her 11 grandchildren, Christopher Landrum, Alicia Landrum, Bianca Butler, Mackenzie Higgins, Curtis E. Landrum, Jr., Lisa Hurt, Shawn Teppish, Leonard W. Landrum, Jr., Casi Landrum, William Sutton, and Ebony Wallenton, her 17 great-grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.

Juanita was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Sandra K. Fisher, a son, Curtis Eugene Landrum, Sr.; a brother James Legions; and a sister Pauline Joyce Dickey.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday, July 30, 2015 from 4 to 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Glidden – Ediger Chapel.

The funeral service will be held at Glidden – Ediger Chapel, McPherson, Kansas at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31st, 2015 with Pastor James A. Hollis, Pastor Gregory Durant, Pastor Jimmy McGee officiating.

The final resting place will be at the McPherson Cemetery McPherson, Kansas.

3255139Marcelline “Marci” Gillen, 84, died July 26, 2015 at Mt. Joseph Senior Village, Concordia, KS, surrounded by her family. She was born on Nov. 12, 1930 in St. Joe, KS to Albert L. & Catherine G. (LaBarge) Paquette.

She graduated from Notre Dame High School. She married Dewane J. Comeau, he preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 1957. She later married Edwin J. Gillen. She was a homemaker and worked at the Ben Franklin Store, Hobby Shop, and Boogaarts as a baker. She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, the Altar Society & the VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Edwin “Ed” Gillen, Concordia; son, Douglas Comeau (Karen), Boerne, TX; daughters, Deanna Reed, Emporia, Debbie Istas (Rex), Killeen, TX & Denise Barney (Gene), Tampa; brothers, Richard Paquette (Judy), Beloit and Alvin Paquette (Diane), Concordia; sisters, Pauline Benefiel (Melvin), Ft. 3254287Sister Miriam Vaughan, 86, died July 25, 2015, at Cloud County Health Center in Concordia, KS. She was a Sister of St. Joseph for 67 years. She was born in Oklahoma City, OK, on March 29, 1929, to Harold and Louise Knaup Vaughan, the third of six children, and was baptized Martha Lou. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, KS on February 2, 1948. On August 14, 1948, Martha Lou received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Miriam Edward. She pronounced first vows on August 15, 1949, and final vows on August 15, 1952.

Sister Miriam received a B.A. diploma in psychology in 1958 from Marymount College. In 1960 and 1967 she received M.A. and Ph.D. degrees respectively from St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO. In 1967 Sister Miriam returned to Marymount College as Chairperson of the Department of Psychology and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS. In 1973 Sister Miriam was appointed a Professor of Psychology. In 1980 Sister Miriam, along with her twin, Sister Louise Marie, accepted an appointment by the Bishop of the Salina Diocese to become advocates for the Salina Diocesan Marriage Tribunal. Sister Miriam served in this capacity until her retirement in 1995. In 1992 she moved to the Motherhouse in Concordia; then in 2011 she moved to Mount Joseph Senior Community.

Sister Miriam was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters. She is survived by one brother, James from Springfield, MO; and sister, Dorothy Otott of The Village, FL. A Bible Vigil Service will be held July 28, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the Nazareth Motherhouse Chapel with Sister Janet Lander as the eulogist. The Mass of Christian Burial will be July 29, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel with Rev. James Hoover presiding. The burial will be in the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery.

Gwendaline “Gwen” Alice Torr, the daughter of Edric and Alice Ellen Bichel Moate, was born October 22, 1927 at Courtland, Kansas. She departed this life of 87 years early Saturday, July 25, 2015, at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas.

“Gwen” or “Babe”, as she was known by all who knew and loved her, lived most of her life in Beloit. On November 11, 1945, she was united in marriage to Neil Junior Torr at the home of his parents in Beloit. This happy union was blessed with four children Susanna, Mark, and twins Jill and Jan. They made their home for many years at 710 North Walnut in Beloit.

In the middle 1960’s, Neil and Gwen purchased the former Eldringhoff Food Store in downtown Beloit, and eventually changed the name to Torr’s HyKlas Food Store. Her people loving personality along with a genuine desire to please customers made them very successful until their retirement in 1994.

Always happy, upbeat, Gwen was a pleasure to be around and she was genuinely interested in people. Gwen was very proud of her family and was passionate about genealogy; her father emigrated with his parents from England, and she spent many happy hours researching her family roots. She was very fond of babies and loved her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchild. Animals, especially cats and puppies always brought a smile to her face. Gwen loved traveling and enjoyed many vacations with Neil.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6242 Auxiliary.

Gwen was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Jan who died at age two months; one son Gary Mark Torr; her son-in-law David Goddard, and one granddaughter Angela Goddard.

Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her husband Neil Torr of the home; children Susanna Hogan and husband Bruce of Wichita, Kansas, Jill Goddard of Salina, Kansas; daughter-in-law Kathy Torr of Beloit; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and many friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at the McDonald Funeral Home with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church or Post Rock Humane Society. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Monday at the McDonald Funeral Home.

8a5bab_e559a9744bfb43a399a6b303752c27e0Grace (Wilkens) Johnson, 77, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2015 at her home in Holyrood. She was born November 7, 1937, in Lorraine. She was the daughter of Clarence and Helen (Kruse) Wilkens.

A resident of Holyrood since 2005, moving from the farm three miles east of town, Grace was a housewife. She was also a member of Women’s Ministry Fellowship, the First Baptist Church of Lorraine, American Legion Auxiliary of Holyrood, and Red Hat Holyrood Stars. She worked part-time at Quivira Heights Jr. High School in the computer lab.

On August 30, 1958 Grace married Richard E. Johnson. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Delbert Wilkens; and son-in-law, Andy Child.

Grace is survived by son, Dan (Sherry) of Lorraine; daughters, Debbie Deem (Tom) of Thornton, CO and Patty Child of Valley Center; brother, Garry Wilkens (Janice) of Holyrood; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be 1-8 p.m., Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at Bushton United Methodist Church.

Private graveside services will be held at Lorraine Baptist Cemetery.

Henry-Huber-1438002733Henry Huber, Jr., 86, of McPherson, KS, passed from this life on Saturday, July 25, 2015, at The Cedars, McPherson. He was born on January 9, 1929, in Durham, KS, the son of Henry Huber, Sr. and Esther (Berg) Huber.

Henry worked in the oil fields for Rossel Well, Inc. in Texas from 1954 to 1963. He then worked for McPherson BPU from 1968 until he retired in 1992. After retirement, he attended Rama Bible College of O.R.U., receiving his minister’s license in 1993. Upon receiving his license, he and his wife dedicated time to doing missionary work in India.

On November 21, 1948, Henry was united in marriage to Dora Lea Harris in McPherson, KS.

He and Dora Lea attended the New Life Foursquare Gospel Church and Word of Faith, both of McPherson.

Survivors include: his wife, Dora Lea Huber of the home; son, Jim Huber of Lindsborg, KS; two daughters, Leanna Huber of McPherson, KS and Madonna Dobbins (Buddy) of Wichita, KS; brothers, Howard Huber of McPherson, KS and Raymond Huber (Audrey) of Wichita, KS; sisters, Delores Nutter of Pryor, OK and Norma Peterson (Tommy Roberts) of Lindsborg, KS; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, July 30, 2015, at New Life Foursquare Gospel Church, McPherson with Pastor Chuck Baker officiating. Inurnment will follow at McPherson Cemetery.

Vesta-Shannon-1437923622Vesta L. Gary Shannon, 91 years and 11 months, went to her reward and to be with her many loved ones on July 25, 2015. She was born August 25, 1923, in Delphos, KS, to Everett Allison and Maud (Barrett) Allison. She cooked for many years at Miltonvale Wesleyan College, Miltonvale, KS. For almost 60 years, she made and decorated cakes for every occasion, specializing in wedding cakes.

In 1942, she married Layton O. Gary. He passed in 1985. In 1987, she married Ernest W. Shannon. He passed in 2011. She also was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers and sisters, her daughter, Coleen Mills, son-in-law, Marvin Morehead, and granddaughter, Sharnelle Singleterry.

Her surviving family includes Elaine Morehead of McPherson, KS, Frank (Marlene) Gary of Hollister, MO, Wesley (Sherleen) Shannon of Ellis, KS, Norman (Elizabeth) Shannon of Kansas City, KS. She is survived by 11 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

She will be greatly missed by her family and host of friends. She will be remembered for her kind willingness to help everyone she met. Her memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at 10:30 AM at the Free Methodist Church in McPherson, KS. Private family burial will be in Miltonvale, KS.

Darrell was born on August 20, 1950 in Superior, Nebraska, to Vernon JR Hill and Ellen Garron Hill. He grew up there and attended Superior public schools. He started working at a very young age at Superior Livestock Auction for a time until the family moved to Kansas.

He moved to Beloit in the spring of 1970 and met his wife of nearly 44 years. Darrell and June (Reiter) were united in marriage on October 5, 1971 in Belleville, KS. Darrell adopted June’s 2 children, James Lee and Rebecca Dawn. In addition three children were born of this union, Jeffery Scott, Angela, and Loren Tyrone Hill.

Darrell was self-employed for many years as a truck driver and did dirt work in his semi-retirement years. He was known as a joker and left people laughing. He was such a frequent visitor to Pump Mart, Beloit, that many referred to it as his office.

He was preceded in death by one son, James Lee, an infant daughter, Angela Mae, his parents, Vernon and Ellen Hill. One brother, LaVerne Dean and one sister, Patricia Ann Barker. Also his beloved niece Pamela Hill.

Darrell is survived by his wife, June, his children Rebecca (Becky) Parks, Jeff Hill, Simpson and Loren Hill, Beloit and 7 grandchildren. Andrew, Jonathon, Shala, and Dana Corp; Bradley, Brenden, and Cody Hill. He would have wanted special mention made of his soon to be step-grandson, Dale.

Visitation will be at Schoen Funeral Home and Monuments from 4 to 7 p.m. with family present from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday July 30th. Graveside services will be at St. John’s Cemetery, Beloit at 11 a.m. Friday July 31. Memorials to American Heart Association, or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
