He was born on November 10, 1925 to Floyd Hostetter and LaVinnie Alice (nee Applegate) Fike at their farm house one and three-quarters mile west of Ramona, KS. In 1938, they moved to the Joseph Fike homestead one mile west and a one-quarter mile south of Ramona. He attended grade and high school at Ramona, and graduated with the Ramona Rural High School class of 1943, where he played basketball and ran track. He also played trumpet in the high school band.

Following his 18th birthday in 1943, he volunteered for the US Navy and served overseas in both the Pacific and Atlantic theatres. He entered service in May of 1944 and was honorably discharged in 1946, when he returned home and began farming with his father and uncle, Kenneth Fike. On July 4, 1946, he met Paula Mueller at a picnic in Hope, KS that honored returning veterans of WW II. They were married on December 28, 1949 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Tampa, KS.
