Dick McKinney, 80, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015, in his cherished hometown of Salina at Salina Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family. He had suffered a stroke.
A son of Salina, Dick was born July 16, 1935, to Mildred (Richardson) McKinney and Richard McKinney. He attended Lincoln Junior High School and graduated with the Class of 54 from Salina High School. He made many friendships along the way, most of which continued throughout his life.
He had trucking in his blood. His grandfather, Ray Richardson, pioneered coast-to-coast transfer hauling when he founded Richardson Transfer and Storage Co. in 1927. Dick grew up around trucks, and by the age of 16, was driving coast-to-coast for Richardson. He started as a billing clerk with Graves Truck Lines in 1963 and spent 16 years there, diligently working his way up to vice president. In 1980, he founded Capital City Truck Lines, operating this business for several years with partners Dwayne Sanders and Ron Smith.
He was thankful for the many blessings he received in his life and dedicated his retirement to public service and giving back to his community. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels, RSVP and the Suicide Hotline and served on the Board of Saline County Commission on Aging.
He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1960 at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He loved long walks with beloved pets, spending time with family, road trips and playing poker with the Class of 54. Generous to a fault, he never let anyone else pick up a check when dining out.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mildred E. and Harry O. Sinsabaugh. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janice McKinney; six children, Kevin, of Los Angeles, Kelly (Monica), of New York City, Shawn (Cindy), of Little Rock, Ark., Kyle (Erick), of Seattle, Timothy (Angie), of Salt Lake City, and Heather, of Kansas City; grandchildren, Paul, Zachary, Erin, Megan, James, Olivia, Henry, Finn and Hattie; sister, Patricia McKinney Corum, of Loveland, Colo.; and nephews, Gregory (Cheri) and Jeffrey Corum, all of Fort Collins, Colo.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. with vigil at 5, Sunday, Dec. 27, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina. Funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, at Sacred Heart Cathedral Catholic Church, Salina. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Saline County Commission on Aging, 245 N. Ninth St., Salina 67401, or Salina Animal Shelter, 329 N. Second St., Salina 67401.
The takeaways from his life and legacy are many: 1. Always buy the first round. 2. Be the world’s best listener and chili-maker. 3. Hug hard and let the tears flow when you say hello or goodbye to someone you love. 4. Seasoned flour is the secret to the best biscuits and gravy.
He was so deeply loved, and he leaves a void in this world and our lives. A celebration of his life will be held at Martinelli’s Little Italy (158 S. Santa Fe, Salina 67401) at noon Monday, Dec. 28, preceding the funeral services.
