Betty J. Oakes, 73, of Salina, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Kaye Pogue Hospice. She was born Feb. 25, 1940, in WaKeeney, the daughter of Matt and Regina Augustine. On Nov. 19, 1988, she married Michael Oakes at Sacred Heart Cathedral Church. She worked many years as a waitress and at Southgate Dillions until retirement. Betty enjoyed cooking, quilting, sewing, doll collection and her country western music.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Matt and Regina Augustine; brother, Elmer Augustine; and stepson, Charles Oakes.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Oakes Sr.; two daughters, Kathy (Jon) Stohs and Kelly (Rick) Robert; one son, Joe (Anita) Hartley; two stepchildren, Michael (Cathi) Oakes Jr. and Cheryl Becker; four brothers, Leo, Augustine, Alvin Augustine, Virgil Augustine and Irvin Augustine; three sisters, Sr. Mary Augustine, Helen Phillips and Marcie Goodwin; 21 grandchildren and six great grandchildren; and a very special friend, Carrie Lopez, who was her caregiver.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 pm, with a vigil service at 6 p.m., Monday, April 29, 2013, at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, with Father Frank Coady officiating. Interment will follow in Mount CalvaryCemetery, Salina.
Memorial contributions may be given to Ryan Mortuary to help defer funeral expenses.
