vet_ffffffGeorge L. Frisbie died on Saturday, January 26 after a very brief illness. George was raised on a farm near Roxbury, Kansas. He was born September 29, 1921. His father was Melvin (Glick) Frisbie and his mother was Anna K. Lott. He graduated from the Roxbury High School and attended Bethany College. Along with his sister, three brothers, parents and grandparents he experienced the dust bowl and tough times of the 1930s. Although the times were difficult, George remembered with appreciation the love shared and lessons learned in the Roxbury area.

Music was a constant source of enjoyment for George. Trained and encouraged by his mother, Anna, George and his brothers and sister developed their musical skills. Family gatherings always included time singing around the piano. George was best known by many people for his solos at weddings, anniversaries and funerals.

Though he had an essential work-related deferment from the military George enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1942. He was selected by his fellow cadets as the “Outstanding Cadet, Class of 44 Williams Field, Arizona”. The aircraft he flew were the AT6, B17 and B29. Because of his proficiency in flying he received orders to train pilots. He was not happy with that assignment and wanted to join his many students who flew combat missions in the Japanese and European fronts.

Falling deeply and quickly in love with Jeanne A. Howe he married Jeanne July 26, 1945. George said, “The best thing I ever did was to ask Jeanne to marry me – after only three weeks. It took her about three more weeks to get ready!” George left the service as soon as the war was over. Jeanne and George shared sixty-five years together and four children, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

George worked for the Morrison family (also of Roxbury) before and after the war buying and shipping hay and grain.

In 1949 Jeanne and George bought a cabinet shop in Gypsum, Kansas. Overnight he became a cabinet maker and soon amplified his business by building and cleaning septic tanks, indoor bathrooms, screened porches and whatever people needed to have built. Next he “grew” into building houses, then the Kipp School and in 1954, he and his able crew built a 140′ high, concrete, slip formelevator in Gypsum-mixing all of the concrete on site. From there his business expanded into building all types of grain storage and related facilities at hundreds of sites in six states. The business philosophy, procedures and practices George established continue to be the basic framework of the Frisbie Construction Company.

In addition to his construction enterprises George developed a large polled, pure bred Charolais cattle herd and cattle operation in Kansas and Oklahoma.

George Frisbie was a problem solver. When he looked at a situation, machine or problem he instinctively looked for a better way to do a job…stronger, faster, more efficient, easier. He leaves a legacy of fairness to customers and employees. The thrill for him was always in meeting a challenge. “One of the biggest things that pushed me on was someone saying to me ‘George I don’t think you can do it’. That inspired me. I did a lot of things because of that”, he often said.

George Frisbie served on numerous Salina area boards including the Planters State Bank, St Francis Boys Home, the Salina hospital foundation, the planning and organizing board of the Southeast of Saline School, the Gypsum Flood Control Committee, the trustees of the Gypsum United Methodist Church. He considered it a privilege to have been able to support many Salina area charities and institutions.

Upon learning of his induction in the 2012 Salina Area Business Hall of Fame George said, “In my opinion there is no such thing as a ‘self- made’, successful person. Many people have helped me along the way. I am grateful”.

His wife, Jeanne, his sister and his brothers all preceded him in death.

He is survived by his children and spouses, Rick and Angie of Salina, Mike and Judy of Herington, Kris and Roger of Ottawa and Kathy and Dee of Denver. His grandchildren and spouses are Jason, David, Meghan and Luke, Kelley and Tess, Kaci and Ian, Katie, Nate. His great grandchildren are Callie, Alexa, Curtis, Abby, Riley, Bailey, Kirsten, Kamden and Kirby.

Friends may pay their respects Tuesday from 1-8 p.m. at Ryan Mortuary in Salina. The family will greet friends from 6:00-7:30 p.m. and welcome friends to dress casually at the greeting and at the church service. Mr. Frisbie’s service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the Gypsum United Methodist Church. Pastors Linda Kusse-Wolfe and David Walters will officiate. Suggested memorials are to the Gypsum United Methodist Church, Roxbury United Parish, or the Southeast of Saline Endowed Scholarship Fund in care of the mortuary.
