, 95, of Salina, died Jan. 30, 2013. She was born Sept. 8, 1917, in Council Grove to William and Peggy Harding Kibble. On April 29, 1939, she married Carl E. Broils.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl E. Broils, in 1996; three brothers; three sisters; son-in-law, Alexander E. Scott; and an infant great-grandson.

She is survived by three daughters, Anita K. Scott, of Salina, Arlene Glenn, of Topeka, and Irma Martin, of Papillion, Neb.; sisterin-law, Betty Kibble, of St. Paul, Minn.; three grandsons; nine great-grandchildren; and eight great-greatgrandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, Salina. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday in Greenwood Cemetery, Council Grove.

The family suggests memorials to the church.

man30205Norman E. Mann, 69, of Salina, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2013. He was born October 22, 1943 in Salina, the son of Leroy J. and Luclille G. (Larson) Mann, Sr. Norman retired after 40 years from the Union Pacific Railroad as a brakeman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Lucille and a brother, Leroy J. Mann, Jr. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Linda Mann; three children, Kimberly Mann, Timothy S. (Diane) Mann, and Rebecca J. Russell (Emmett); eight siblings, Larry Mann, Carolyn Gaston, Charles Mann, Gloria Szymoniak, Marvin Mann, Linda Sue Ballard, David Mann and Diane Bethe; nine grandchildren, Demetria (Juan) Garcia, Kendra Oberle, Evan Clinage, Bridgette Oberle, Kristen Mann, Sierra Mann, Lenora Dyke, Penny Dyke and Lindsey Drush; and two great-grandchildren, Julian and Mia Espino.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N Eighth, Salina. Burial will follow in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Tammy Walker Cancer Center or First Southern Baptist Church in care of the mortuary.

1959444vet_ffffffArliene Berkley Matthews, 90, Tescott, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at her home. Arliene was born June 28, 1922, at Bunker Hill, Kansas, to H. J. “Jack” and Paulina Boller Berkley. She was the oldest of eight children.

In October 1924 the family moved to Tescott. Arliene graduated from Tescott Grade School in 1936 and from Tescott High in 1940. She attended Salt City Business College in Hutchinson, Kansas. She received a civil service appointment to work in Washington, D.C. and went there in October 1941 and was assigned to the Office of Chief of Ordnance, War Department on 4 November 1941. She was working there on December 7, 1941 and on the 8th of December she walked to the Capitol and watched President Roosevelt being driven to the Capitol to ask Congress to declare war on Japan. Her Department was transferred to the Pentagon when two floors of the Pentagon were completed.

After about a year, she resigned and went to Kansas City and worked at the Inter-State National Bank. In June 1943 on her 21st birthday she enlisted in the Women Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC). She was called to active duty in October 1943 and was sworn in to the WAC (Women Army Corps. She took her basic training at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. After basic she was sent to WAC Detachment SCSU #1104, Harbor Defenses of Portland, Fort Williams, Maine. In September 1944 she was transferred to Headquarters Company, 2525th Service Unit, South Post, Fort Myer, Virginia and worked for the Logistics Operations Section, War Department General Staff, in the Pentagon. She was discharged at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, having served two years and three months.

She worked many years as a teller at The Bank of Tescott and was a Director of the Bank from 1978 until her retirement at the end of 2011.

She married Lyle Matthews of Tescott in October 1948. He preceded her in death on July 24, 1978. They were the parents of five children. The surviving children are Dr. Earl Matthews, Salina; Paula (John) Nelson, Tescott; Jayne (Rick) Hunt, Manhattan; Burke Matthews, Salina; Mary Beth (Wesley) Phelps, Tescott. She is survived by 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and one step great grandchild. She is survived by brothers, Paul (JoAnn) Berkley, Salina; Hal J. (Eleanor) Berkley, Tescott; Don (Pat) Berkley, Abilene; Kent (Debbie) Berkley, Salina; and two sisters-in-law, Lila Berkley, Salina; and Eleanor A. Berkley, Downs. She was also preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Jack B., Robert B., and Jerry J.

Arliene was a member of the Tescott Methodist Church, Lincoln County Historical Society, Smoky Valley Genealogical Society, Tescott Museum and Historical Society, American Legion Post #255 and American Legion Auxiliary, AMVETS, Charter member of the Women in Military Service for America, Mary Wade Strother Chapter of the DAR, Rolling Hills Wildlife and Museum.

A celebration of Arliene’s life will be at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, February 13, at the Tescott United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Franklin Cemetery, Tescott. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tescott United Methodist Church, Rolling Hills Wildlife and Museum, or the donor’s choice.

Thelma “June” Ramirez, 64, of Salina, passed away Thursday, February 7th, at Salina Regional Health Center.

June was born in Coolidge, Arizona on June 6, 1948, a daughter of the late Ruby (Thomas) and Everet  Lee.

She was the wife of Frederick “Art” Ramirez, they were married October 9, 1965 in El Rio, Califonia.

June is  survived by  her husband, Art; son, Eric A. Ramirez, of Salina ; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters.

Cremation has been selected and no services are planned.

1959944Gerald S. Plush, 69, Minneapolis, passed away Saturday, February 9, 2013 near Minneapolis. He was born August 29, 1943 in Beloit, KS to Lloyd and Dorothy Plush. Gerald was a 1961 graduate of Glasco High School. He was united in marriage with Diana K. Gaskill on August 29, 1960. He worked for many years as a corrections officer in Ellsworth.

Survivors include his wife Di of the home; son Gerry Plush and his wife Sara of Minneapolis; daughter Kelly Lott and her husband Wayne of Sterling; brothers Ken Plush of Dodge City and Graydon Plush of Denver, CO; sister Jeane Cadman of Little Rock, AR; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. on Wednesday at Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis. Private memorial services will be held on Thursday. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Minneapolis Golf Course or the American Red Cross.

Eileen F. Bolte, 73, of Salina, passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013. She was born Dec. 2, 1939, in Lincoln to Edwin and Anna (Panzer) Reinert.

Eileen worked as a dental assistant and later as a homemaker. She was an active member in the St. John’s Lutheran Church. She held various offices at the church, was a member of the choir and ladies organization. In her free time, she loved to be outdoors. Eileen enjoyed golfing, gardening and traveling. The love of her life though, were her grandchildren.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jerald Reinert; and daughter, Sheri Gleeson.

She is survived by her husband, Emerson Bolte, of Salina; son, Ben (Leslie) Bolte, of Valley Center; brothers, Ervin (Kathy) Reinert, of Inman, and Lonnie Reinert, of Lincoln; sister, Lois McClelland, of Wichita; three grandchildren, Taylor, Connor and Lillian Bolte; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina. Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m..

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 111 W. Magnolia Road, Salina. The Rev. Gerald Radtke and the Rev. Leroy Pralle will be officiating.

Inurnment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Lutheran Hour Ministries or Kaye Pogue Hospice Center.

LINCOLN – Dennis L. Ahlvers, lost his battle to cancer Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013. He was born in Colony on Dec. 14, 1952, to Johnnie Dale and Margie (Reischick) Ahlvers.

Dennis worked as a computer operator at the St. Anothony Hospital, Denver. He also worked in the public school system there. While living in Denver, Dennis met his future wife, Karen Rose (Melvin) Ahlvers. The two were married Jan. 8, 1982. After moving to Kansas, Dennis worked at the D & S Convience store in Ellsworth.

In his free time, Dennis spent time with his family. He especially loved his grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, camping, spending time with his dogs, riding motorcycles and raising and rescuing dogs (animals).

He is preceded in death by his son, Jessie Ahlvers; his father, Johnnie; and father and mother-in-law, George B. and JoAnn Melvin.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; son, Johnathan (Tina) Ahlvers; daughter, Jolene and fiance Shawn; his mother; Margie; brother, Dale Eugene (Judy) Ahlvers; brother-in-law, George Melvin; and grandchildren, Cameron, Rose, Jasmine, Brooke and Lily Ahlvers.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12 at Ryan Mortuary.

A vigil/rosary will be at 5:30 p.m. with the Rev. Gale Hammerschmidt as Celebrant.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Sacred Hearth Cathedral, Salina. The Rev. Frank Coady will be Celebrant.

Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at the Elmwood Cemetery, Beloit.

Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association.

William E. ‘Bill’ Dearing, 76, of Salina, died Saturday, February 9, 2013. He was born January 23, 1937 in Salina, the son of Ralph W. and Gladys E. (Leonard) Dearing. Bill worked as a sales managerfor Sears for 37 years, retiring in 1993. He also owned and operated Bill’s Auto Sales for seven years.

During his retirement, Bill was an active member of the community; he volunteered his time to church activities, the Big Brothers program, visiting people in nursing homes, and lending a hand to families less fortunate than he. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping, fishing, and hunting. He loved making people laugh and would often introduce himself as “Over-the-Hill Bill” or “Wild Bill”.

Bill is survived by two daughters, Shelley and Sherry; and three grandchildren, Andrea, Kyle, and David.

Memorial services will be held at 12:15 p.m. Sunday, February 17, 2013 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 845 S. Ohio, Salina. Private burial took place in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina

Gerald J. Godbout, 72, passed to his Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, surrounded by his family. He was born Aug. 2, 1940, in Seneca, the son of Gerald and Dorothy (Baker) Godbout. Jerry was a construction superintendent for more than 40 years and celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife, Karan Seyler Godbout, in July 2010. He was a past exalted ruler of Salina Elks Lodge No. 718, a DDGER and former member of the board of directors of Elks KETCH.

Jerry was preceded in death by a younger brother; two younger sisters; and his mother and father. He is survived by his wife, Karan; his five children, Joe, Jim (Trina), Bryan (Anita), Denise Elmore (John) and Catherine Godbout. His grandchildren are Jeremy, Chassy, Hope, Chaz, Danielle, Ciara, Sondra, Carson, Charlee, Ryan and Shelby. His great-granddaughter is Skylar. A brother, Paul Godbout, and a sister, Sharon DeVince (Francis) also survive.

There will be a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday Feb. 16, 2013, at St. Mary’s Queen of the Universe Catholic Church. Inurnment will be in the All Saints Catholic Cemetery. Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Ryan Mortuary, where friends may call. Memorials are suggested to KETCH or the Tammy Walker Cancer Center.

LINDSBORG — William F. Rathlef, 98, was born in Omaha, Neb., on Aug. 10, 1914, and died Jan. 30, 2013. He was a lifelong resident of Cheyenne, Wyo., until joining his son, John, and family six years ago.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, who died in 1983. Survivors include one sister, Evelyn McDonald, of Oklahoma; son, John A. Rathlef and wife Janice, of Lindsborg; three grandchildren, Jeff, Joy and Jacob; five great-grandchildren; and a loving niece, Donna Sue Brinson.

During WWII, Bill was employed by United Airlines, in Cheyenne, as a mechanic and worked on C-47s and DC-3s. After the war, he worked as a mechanic for Mobil Oil out of Horse Creek, Wyo., and Kimball, Neb. He retired in 1978. During life in Cheyenne, he worked for the Hutchinson Greenhouse and other greenhouses in the same location. He was laid off at age 90.

He and his wife were proud of the fact they had provided a college education for their son. Survivors of the Great Depression and World War II, they were content with the life God had given them. He attended the Evangelical Covenant Church in Lindsborg. Bill spent the last two years of his life in Riverview Estates Nursing Home, Marquette.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at Evangelical Covenant Church, Lindsborg. Memorials may be made to the church or Riverview Estates Nursing Home, in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina 67401.

Ila E. Swanson, 89, of Salina, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013. She was born March 14, 1923, in Bennington, to Ernest and Ola (Novis) Turner. On July 14, 1944, she married Ernest V. Swanson.

She was a member of University United Methodist Church and was a wellknown quilter, displaying quilts at the Smoky Hill Museum. She also made ceramics, taught cooking classes, taught 4-H clubs, worked as a cook in elementary and high schools, and was a hard worker on the family farm.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Olivia; a son, Clyde; a granddaughter Maria; and a grandson, Tony.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest V.; a daughter, Ina Swanson, of Salina; a granddaughter, Stephanie Robertson and husband Jeffrey; and three great-granddaughters, Ashlee Payne, Jilian and Hailee Robertson, all of Salina.

There will be no visitation. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at University United Methodist Church, Salina, with the Rev. Mike Rose officiating. Private inurnment will be at a later date. Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina, is handling arrangements.

vet_ffffffDavid Kipp Conover Jr., 72, of Salina, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013. He was born Feb. 7, 1941, at Montclair, N.J., to David Sr. and Virginia (Swift) Conover. He married Diane Joleen Sisler on Feb. 19, 2001.

Dave began his military service at Fort Dix, N.J., in 1962 and served in Korea. On Sept. 27, 2000, he retired from Wholly Genes Software — a genealogy software program company who makes TMG — The Master Genealogist, where he was a support technician.

He leaves behind his wife, Diane Conover, of the home; two sons, Richard and David III; stepson, Eric Kupar; two sisters-in-law, Kathy Lowman and Cindy Sisler; brother-in-law, Bryan Sisler and wife Therese; mother-in-law, Ruth Sisler; father-in-law, Jerry Sisler; and two granddaughters, Asia and Katie Conover.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 743 E. Magnolia, Salina. Memorial contributions may be made to the church, in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina 67401.

reg30212Jeffery Lind Regan Jr., 60, of Salina, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013. He was born Dec. 30, 1952, the son of Frederick and JoAnn (Chapman) Regan. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Joshua, and a son-in-law, Sid Young.

Jeffery is survived by his wife, Louise Regan, of the home; son, Sean Regan and wife Brandy Sacco, of Topeka; daughter, Angelina Young, of Salina; two sisters, Cat Dyer and husband Allen, of Kent, Wash., and Terri Bradley and husband David, of Middleton, Ohio; and six grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at Salina Church of Christ, 1646 N. Ninth St., Salina.

He is survived by his wife, Beth (Saunders) of the home. 3 daughters; Joyce (Ted) WIlliams; Sheree (Dave) Spratlen of Salina, Sandy ( Jim) Lumb of Manhattan. 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Andy and Gayle Williams, Gleason, Harper, and Hampton; Joe Williams; Sam and Abby Williams, Mabel and Gus; Anne (Lumb) and Caleb Rubash and Ivan; Bonnie Lumb; Becky and Luke Schoenecker, Dawson and Kaison; Mike Griffin; Stephanie Spratlen, Whitley and Trey; Slade Spratlen and Yvonne Baker, Trevor, Emily, Brody and Brylee. Sister, Clena Green, Salina.

LeRoy and Beth were married on December 1, 1951 in Wichita Falls, TX while he was stationed in the Air Force. A veteran of the Korean War; a lifetime member of the Elks; member of the American Legion Post #1040, Lindsborg.

LeRoy was a farmer, worked for Cook’s Paint as a tile and flooring installer, and retired from the Salina County Appraiser’s Office.

Friends may pay their respect Monday, from 7-9 pm at the family home in Salina. The celebration of LeRoy’s life is at the Ryan Mortuary, Salina, Tuesday, February 19, 11am. Inurnment at the Gypsum Cemetery will be at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to the V.F.W. Ladies Aux.

Opal A. Percival, 95 died Feb. 11, 2013. She was born Oct 1, 1917 in Shady Bend, the daughter of Frank & Ruby (Galloup) Crooks. She was a cook and baker for Salina USD #305 Schools for over 25 years and an active R.S.V.P. volunteer. Opal loved quilting.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Clay Percival.

Opal is survived by her son Bob (Cindy) Percival, San Francisco, CA, and two daughters, Suzy (Larry) Yeagley, Lee’s Summit, Mo and Carol Fritz, Salina. She has 8 grandchildren, 14 great and 4 great great grandchildren.

1970536William B. “Bill” Blake, 67, Minneapolis, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2013 at his home. He was born August 20, 1945 in Concordia to Bryce and Wilma (Tipton) Blake. Bill was a 1963 graduate of Ada High School. He was custom harvester from 1975 to 1983 and he was the owner and operator of B&B Waste Management in Minneapolis. On September 5, 1981 he was united in marriage with Brenda Belvill in Delphos.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife Brenda of the home; sons Brady Blake and his wife Jennifer of Abilene, Barry Blake and his wife Tara of Minneapolis, and Wade Blake and his wife Lori also of Minneapolis; brothers Dale Blake and his wife Robin of Salina and Jon Blake and his wife Jolene of Minneapolis; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, February 20, at the Wilson Family Funeral Home, Minneapolis. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Minneapolis. Visitation will be from 2 P.M. to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. ABILENE — Mary Helen Jared, 95, of Abilene, formerly of Salina, died Feb. 6, 2013, at VillageManor, Abilene. She was born March 24, 1917, the daughter of Fred and Lillian (Lowell) Utt. She was a homemaker.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Louis. She is survived by a son, Tim Jared (Cindy), of Manhattan; three grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

Mary’s ashes will be inurned in the columbarium in Christ Cathedral Episcopal Church, Salina. No services are planned.

breault__c_278x424Christie Michelle Breault, 45, of Benton, Kansas, passed away Sunday, February 17th, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

Christie was born in Salina, Kansas on July 12, 1967, daughter of Bonnie (Robb) and Larry Merriman.

Christie was an author of children’s books, an elementary school teacher, and a longtime substitue teacher.

She was a member of the Kansas Authors Club,  authored two books and was involved with her writing group “writer gals”.

On August 20, 1988, Christie married Bradley L. Breault in Salina, Kansas.

Survivors include two sons, Logan Breault, of Benton, Kansas, Joshua Merriman, of El Dorado, Kansas; sisters, Deborah L. Shelton and husband Jack of Hugoton, Kansas, Jennifer Enochs of Olathe, Kansas, Laurie Schmidt of Portland, Oregon; grandsons, Gunner and Brogan.

At the family’s request there will be no visitation.

A memorial service will be held at First Southern Baptist Church, Salina, Kansas, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 23rd, 2013.

Inurnment will take place at Smoky Hill Cemetery in Rural Saline County, Kansas following the memorial service.

Clara M. Wagner, 106, of Brookville, died Saturday, Feb.16, 2013. She was born Nov. 15, 1906, in Ellsworth County to Frank E. and Marie (Schultz) Warta. She was a member of the Brookville United Methodist Church, Fidelity Rebekah Lodge No. 169 of Brookville, the P.M.O. Club, D.W.T. Club and the Brookville Senior Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George E. Wagner, in 1975; a son, Joe Ray Wagner; a daughter, Mary (Wagner) Lolley; two sisters, Rose Wikoff and Marguerite Schroeder; two brothers, Carl Warta and Frank Warta; a grandchild; and a great-great grandchild. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at Brookville United Methodist Church with Pastor Lori Persigehl officiating. Burial will follow in the Brookville Cemetery. vet_ffffffJohn V. Swiercinsky, 65, of Salina, went to be with his heavenly Father on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013. He was born Jan. 10, 1948, in Concordia, the son of L.T. and Ruth (Falk) Swiercinsky.

Started his education at Union Valley Country School and received his high school diploma from Belleville High School. Continued his education at Cloud County Community College. He served his country in Vietnam and received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Later graduated from Kansas State University and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Agronomy.

He married Lois Meyer on Aug. 4, 1973, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, in Byron, Neb. John was an avid bridge player and received his Life Master. John considered himself as Bill Synder’s right-hand man. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Salina and active in the United Methodist Men.

John was preceded in death by his parents; son, Steven Swiercinsky; and his brother, Jim Swiercinsky.

John is survived by his wife, Lois, of the home; two sons, Michael Swiercinsky and wife Stephanie, of Leonardville, and Thomas Swiercinsky, of Salina; one brother, Ken Swiercinsky and wife Karen, of Maple Hill; one grandchild, Paige Swiercinsky, of Leonardville; and multiple nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. at Ryan Mortuary.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at First United Methodist Church, Salina.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. in Union Valley Cemetery, near Belleville.

Eulora “Lori” Allen, 88, of Salina, passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at Presbyterian Manor. She was born Feb. 6, 1925, in Salina, the daughter of Horace A. and Thelma J. Drawbaugh.

She was a 1946 graduate of Beloit High School, attended Marymount College and graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1950. While in college she served as a secretary to Hugh Chittenden, minister of First Baptist Church in Salina, and followed him to Baptist Church in Ottawa at his request. In 1955, she started working for the Mobil Oil Co. for 22 years. After retiring in 1977, she married Don Allen on July 17. She was a member of AARP, Salina Community Theater Guild, Elks Ladies Golf, Salina Arts Center and First Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Don, on Jan. 18, 2013.

She is survived by one sister, Shirley Drawbaugh, of Salina.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 19, at Salina Presbyterian Manor Chapel.

Inurnment will be in Gypsum Hill Cemetery.

Richard was born in Washington D.C. on January 10, 1935, to the late Margaret Elizabeth (Young) and Earl Leroy Adams.
He was an iron worker for 40 years in the Washington D.C. area.
Richard served in the Navy during the Korean War as a flight mechanic.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years Karen (Lupher) Adams.
Richard is also survived by three sons; Richard Adams Jr. of Lindsborg, Rodney Adams and Ronald Adams both of Salina.
Also surving him are two granddaughters, Jennifer Adams of Jacksonville, Florida and Ashleigh Adams of Hays, Kansas.

all30221James Ronald Allen, 75 Salina, died Thursday, February 21, 2013, of natural causes at Salina Regional Health Center.Mr. Allen was born on July 3, 1937, at Newton, Kansas, to Everett and Mildred Allen. He was an outstanding athlete at Newton High School. After high school, he attended and graduated from Kansas State University in 1959 and immediately began his employment with Research Products Company, Salina, with an eight-month pregnant wife in tow and $200 in their pocket. He retired from the company as President/CEO after over 43+ years, at the end of 2002.

During his lifetime, he served on a number of local boards including Sunflower Bank, St John’s Regional Health Center, Salina Regional Health Center, Greater Salina Community Foundation, YWCA Endowment and the Salina Country Club. During his career, he had been a member of the Kansas Grain and Feed Assn., Assn. of Operative Miller’s, Assn. of Cereal Chemists and the North American Miller’s Assn. Additionally, he was chosen to be a member of the Salina Business Hall of Fame. Jim was a man who never hesitated to invest when he saw there was a need. His philanthropic efforts in Salina were legendary and will be sorely missed. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and member of the First Presbyterian Church of Salina.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; wife of 42 years, Janice J. Allen; a sister, Elaine Sauerwein; and a grandson, Destry Greer Allen. He is survived by a son, Bart J. Allen (Theresa), two daughters, Jennifer Allen (Kat) and Brenda Wohler, all of Salina, 6 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 25, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church, 308 S. Eighth, with the Rev. Edith Gause officiating. berneta_leaf_burnamBerneta Elaine Leaf was born in Lindsborg, Kansas, on
December 11, 1928, daughter of Bernard and Judith (Valine) Leaf. She graduated
from Lindsborg High School, attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, and the
Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was married to Roy P.
Burnam, Jr., December 23, 1951. Two daughters were born to them: Sonja Lynn and
Pamela Joan. Berneta died at Bethany Home in Lindsborg on February 23, 2013.

In Hickory, North Carolina, for almost 30 years Berneta developed a music
studio in her home, teaching stringed instruments, piano, and voice, with
additional locations in Morganton, Lexington, and Salisbury. Her special
emphases were collaborative playing and the study of music theory. Many of Mrs.
Burnam’s students continued with their musical studies professionally and
avocationally. Berneta was one of the co-founders of the Hickory Symphony
Orchestra which still exists today as the Western Piedmont Symphony. She was an
active member of St. Cecelia Music Club, led church choirs at Christ Lutheran
and Miller Lutheran Churches, and served on the inaugural board of the Hickory
Civil Rights Committee during the critical and beginning stages of
desegregation in North Carolina.

In 1981, she moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she was deeply involved
in the lives of her daughters and three grandsons. She was active in Woodland
Presbyterian Church and Lutheran Church of the Holy Communion. In 2005, she
moved back to Lindsborg where she reconnected with family and friends from the
past and attended the many special events and concerts offered in Lindsborg.
She moved into Bethany Home in 2011.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Joanna, and brother Robert
(Barbara). She is survived by her daughters Sonja Lynne Brown (Thomas Tuson)
and Pamela Jenkins; grandsons Dorian Brown, Derek Jenkins, and Andre Jenkins
(Jamie); great-granddaughter Joelle Jenkins; brothers Edward and Alan (Karen)
Leaf, and sister Ruth Ann Leaf.

There will be a memorial service at the Bethany Home Chapel in Lindsborg, on
Friday, March 1, at 2:00. Additionally, a service and inurnment will be held
later this year, also in Lindsborg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made
in Berneta’s name to Bethany Home in Lindsborg, or to the Lutheran Church of

Ann was born in Salina, on June 19, 1953, to Phyllis Roberta (Blank) Miles and the late Lewis George Miles, Jr.
Ann worked as a commercial graphic designer and was a talented artist throughout her life.

zim30228Richard H. “Dick” Zimmerman was born Feb. 8, 1921, in rural Harvey County, south of Burrton. He was the son of Samuel R. and Alice E. (Vollweider) Zimmerman. He graduated from Mount Hope High School, Business College and Wisconsin School of Banking. He was a member of Mount Hope Lodge No. 238, Scottish Rite and Shriners, a member of First United Methodist Church of Salina, and a charter member of First United Methodist Church of Fountain Hills, Ariz.

He married C. Earlene Blubaugh on July 14, 1940, in Preston.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Alice; an infant daughter, Anita Kay; a brother, Fred L. Zimmerman; and sisters, Pauline Crawford and Nadine Zimmerman.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Earlene; a son, the Rev. Richard E. Zimmerman and Carolyn, of McPherson; two daughters, Paula and Robert Trimble, of Mukilteo, Wash., and Terri Zimmerman, of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Terri Trimble and Dilip Argarwal, of Twickenham, England, Susan McCoy and Jon, of El Dorado, Galen R. Zimmerman and Kim, of Killeen, Texas, Christi Kreutz and Steve, of Everett, Wash., Stephen Zimmerman, of Hutchinson, and Bryan Trimble, of Louisiana; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-granddaughters.

In 1948, he purchased a grocery store in Harper and later was employed by First National Bank of Harper. He served as president of the chamber of commerce; Harper school board; Scout leader; secretary-treasurer of Tri-County Bankers Association; and served on the Harper County fair board.

Later he was hired to run Bentley Kansas State Bank and Home State Bank of Lewis.

In 1967, at the age of 46, he purchased controlling interest in First State Bank of Salina. As in every community in which he lived, he gave of his time and talent. He was a member of Kansas Banker’s Association; vice president of Salina Chamber of Commerce; chairman of the board of Asbury Hospital Association and later Salina Regional Health; advisory board of the Presbyterian Manor; chairman of the board of Kansas Wesleyan; and was active in many other civic organizations, as well as his church.

There will be no visitation.

On June 2, 1949, she married Joseph H. Crawford in Abilene. She received a Bachelor’s Degree from Marymount College and a Master’s Degree from Kansas State University. Rosemary was a teacher and Head of the Secretarial Science Department at Brown Mackie College in Salina for 30 years.

Rosemary was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; brothers, Ray, John, Bill and Leo; sisters, Ethel, Dorothy, Margaret and Sr. Mary Mark.

She is survived by her children, Bill (Kay) Crawford, of Carmel, IN, Mary Pat Wood, of Salina, Mark Crawford, of Salina and Ann (Gary) Dowdy, of Woodward, OK; seven grandchildren, Sarah and Joe Crawford, Katie, Kelly and Andrew Wood and Trinity and Tone Crawford; and one great-grandchild, Penny Lane Baker.

Ethlyn had been a designer at Dwight Putnam’s and Don Loader’s in Salina. She was an active community member, participating in projects, both public and private, that promoted communityeducation and awareness of the need for equality. She took that compassion and dedication to her church, where she and her family were active for many years. A self-taught seamstress, Ethlyn was making quilts for her family until she could no longer see to stitch.

Ethlyn was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Tacha, in 2008; son, Thomas Craig Tacha; and a sister, Garrah Lillian Gaumer.

She is survived by a daughter, Toni Lynn Graham, of Wichita; brother, Virgil Boyd Bainter, of Hutchinson; daughter-in-law, Martha (Carlisle) Tacha, of Grand Island, Neb.; seven grandchildren, Bill Tacha, Anne Tacha, Lindsay Graham Frack, Katie Graham, Kelly Graham, Hanna Graham Hentzen, and Jeffrey Graham; and a great-granddaughter, Isabel Rhys Frack.

He was the husband of Connie L. (Bennett) Adkins.  They were married June 3, 1978.
Gene is  survived by his wife Connie, of the home;  daughter, Laura L. Adkins-Rico, of Salina; sisters, Charlotte (Jack) Allen, of Council Grove, Kansas and Dorothy (Wayne) Owen, of Salina; brother, Josh Adkins, of Salina; grandchildren, Meagan, Emily, and Brittanie Rico; as well as niece, Dawnetta Bennett; and nephews, David and John Owen, Robert, Brian, Christopher, and Aaron Bennett.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Shirley was a member of Church of Christ, Salina. She retired from Coronado Engineering, where she was an accountant. In her spare time, she enjoyed needlepoint. She loved to vacation, especially to Arizona, where she would visit her grandchildren.

Russell was a lifetime resident of northwest Saline County and had resided at Eaglecrest Retirement Community the last few years of his life. Russell was born in Lucas, Kansas, on October 10, 1928 to Alva Lee and Winiferd Edith (Kressly) Burger. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Marcella Walle on August 10, 1947 at the Culver United Methodist Church in Culver, Kansas. Together, they shared 52 years of marriage.

Russell graduated from Culver High School and farmed the family homestead in the Culver area until he retired. During his lifetime he was a member of First United Methodist Church and Peacemakers Sunday School class, Salina Moose Lodge and Culver Lions Club. He served on the Ell- Saline School Board and 40 years on the Saline County Soil Conversation District board.

Russell is survived by his sister Loa Page, Las Vegas, Nevada, daughter Candace (Rick) Langley, sons Terry (Shelda) Burger, Paul (Gale) Burger all of Salina, and son-in-law Scott Ross of Centennial, Colorado. He has nine surviving grandchildren: Arianne Burger, Joshua (Lauren) Burger, Marcus Ross, Krista Langley (Bradley Robinson fiance’) all of Colorado. Kyle (Rebecca) Langley, Lindsay (J.D.) Garber of Salina, Carly Burger of Kansas City, April (David) Roberts, Cody Burger and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Evelyn, daughter Patricia (Burger) Ross, and grandsons Kelly Langley, Jake Ross, and Conner Ross.

Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 122 N. 8th, Salina, KS at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 11, 2013. A private inurnment at Crown Point Cemetery will take place at a later date. Kathryn R. Curran, 98, of Salina, passed away Friday, March 8, 2013. She was born December 1, 1914, in Elk Falls, KS, the daughter of John J. and Hanora A. (Roach) Eisenbeis. She was raised in Olpe, KS, then moved to Kansas City, MO, lived there until retirement and then returned to Olpe, KS. Kathryn was a homemaker and worked in retail sales at the Jones Store in Kansas City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter E. Curran in 1964; son, William J. Curran, in 2012; daughter, Ruth Ann Curran, in 1955; great-granddaughter, Samantha Rose Martin, in 1994; and five siblings, Sr. Aline Eisenbeis OSF, Jim Eisenbeis, Margaret Hayes, Ruth Dorty and Frances Bruce.

Survivors include three daughters, Janet (Arthur) Brake of Salina, Cheryl (Louis) Armstrong of Kansas City, KS and Patricia Curran and husband T.J. A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1000 Burr Oak Lane. A rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth. Private family inurnment will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Kansas City, MO.

Memorials may be made to the Adopt a Student Program, Sacred Heart Jr. Sr. High School, in care of Ryan Mortuary.

adams_289x405George Neal Adams, age 100, died on March 12, 2013 at Salina Presbyterian Manor in Salina, Kansas. He was born December 7, 1912, in Delphos, KS, the son of George H. and Bessie (Peet) Adams.  He married Elda P. Zeller, October 25, 1935, at Manhattan, Kansas.  Prior to Elda’s death in 2011, they celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.  George has been a resident at the Salina Presbyterian Manor for two years.  The family moved to Salina over 50 years ago.

George attended the Manhattan, Kansas, schools and Kansas State University.   During his working years, he was involved in supervision of motor freight transportation.  He joined Graves Truck Line in 1958 and retired as Senior Vice-President in 1980.  Previous to that, he was employed for twenty years by Santa Fe Trail Transportation.  He was a member of the Kansas Motor Carrier’s Association and enjoyed leadership roles.  Mr. Adams was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as an elder and trustee. He and Elda were active members of Presbyterian Mariners.

George and Elda spent much time researching their ancestors.  They also enjoyed gardening and attending Kansas State basketball and football games.

George was preceded in death by his parents, hiswife, Elda, a brother, Don R. Adams, and a sister, Myrna M. Ross.

George is survived by a daughter, Kay Elda Winter and her husband William C. of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and a son, Richard George Adams and his wife, Carolyn, of Topeka, Kansas.  He leaves four grandchildren, David S. Adams and his wife, Jill, of Topeka, Kansas, Mark A. Adams and his wife, Casey, of Overland Park, Kansas, Dr. Nancy (Winter) Monsen and her husband, Kristan, of Los Altos, California, and Frederick W. Winter of Denver, Colorado. Also surviving is a sister, Hazel Maxine Porche of Leesville, Louisiana, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am, Saturday, March 16, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church in Salina.  Burial will be at the Delphos Cemetery, Delphos, Kansas.  Memorials may be made to The First Presbyterian Church or to the donor’s choice.
