Audrey-Colyn-1467800463Audrey L. Colyn , beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, departed this world to enter heaven on July 5, 2016. Born Audrey Lavon Duke on October 2, 1923, to Timothy Duke and Beatrice (Ward) Duke in Ottumwa, Iowa, Audrey grew up loving animals and dancing. In high school, she was a drum majorette and was an aspiring ballerina until the war erupted and she worked as a riveter.

After the family relocated to Lenox, Iowa, Audrey met and ultimately married Charles Junior Colyn on March 13, 1943, in Ft Smith, Arkansas, where he was stationed. Although he went by Junior in those days, she called him “Chuck” and that is what everyone else began to call him too. Chuck Colyn owned his own welding and industrial x-ray business, and he welded hundreds of highway bridges during his successful career before being tragically killed in a work-related accident.

Over their forty-one year marriage, they had four children:

Charles Craig Colyn, born in 1943, was one of the first special needs children (Down’s Syndrome) who attended public school in Ottumwa, Iowa where he learned how to read and write. Charles preceded his mother in death and passed away in 1993.

Audrey is survived by her remaining three daughters and their families:

Carmela Leach (spouse Dale); Grandson Fielding Snyder; and Granddaughter Dacia Snyder and great- grandson Aiden.

Cozette Christian (spouse Tim); Grandson Jacob Christian (spouse Billi) and great-granddaughters Tyler and Ryan; Granddaughter Amber Durst (spouse Drue) and great-granddaughters Alea and Aubree and great-grandson Lane; and Granddaughter Cherith Johnson (spouse Brad) and great-grandson Zeke and great-granddaughter Eilee.

Callista Gregg (spouse Gene); Grandson Ethan (spouse Megan) and great-granddaughter Parker; Granddaughter Talitha Jacobs (spouse Keith) and great-grandson Theo and great-granddaughter Wren; Granddaughter Charis Clopton and great-grandson Andres and great-granddaughter Elyn; and Grandson Sterling (spouse Marissa).

Audrey was devoted to her family and loved living in the country with her horses and at one time had a goat and a donkey as well. She was always on the go and stayed busy. Audrey enjoyed watching birds and usually had a bird feeder by a window, where ever she was. She was actively involved in church life at First Baptist Church, 4-H, McPherson City Council, and she was a Paso Fino Association ring steward.

During the last four years of her life, she resided at the Tolbert Care Home under the direction of Mike and Marla Tolbert. Marla was an enormous blessing to Audrey during that time.

She will be sorely missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a multitude of friends.

The memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM, Friday, July 8, 2016, at First Baptist Church, McPherson.

Marynell Reece PictureAs if emphasizing one of the foremost priorities of her life, Marynell Dyatt Reece died on July 4, 2016. Kansas and the nation lost a dedicated patriot and tireless worker for the values she firmly believed in. Born on April 6, 1920 to Verne and Nellie Taylor Dyatt, Marynell spent her early years in Kanorado, Kansas, and always treasured the vast golden wheat land of western Kansas where she returned almost every summer for harvest on the high plains. Somehow, her death at harvest is itself a statement.
Marynell loved the University of Kansas and the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She spent her freshman year at the University of Colorado but transferred to KU for the remainder of her college years. She majored in journalism, participated in Jay Jaynes, was a Panhellenic officer, and led students in many other organizations. At KU, she met and fell in love with H.W. (Bill) Reece, the son of a highway contractor from Scandia, Kansas. As World War II loomed over the KU campus, Bill and Marynell were married on May 20, 1942 in the Presbyterian Church in Lawrence. Bill then immediately shipped out as an ensign in the US Navy. Marynell followed him from Neah Bay, Washington to Miami Florida and other ports between until her beloved brother, John Taylor Dyatt, was killed in an aircraft accident in England. She returned to Kanorado to be with her parents until the end of the war.
When Bill returned from the Navy, he joined his father and brother, Jack, in the highway contracting business. Bill eventually returned to Scandia, Kansas, where he and Jack built one of the most successful highway contracting businesses in Kansas: Reece Construction Company. Marynell became an active participant in the business and a leader in the Scandia community. She served on the local school board during a very difficult period of reorganization and consolidation of school districts in Kansas. She was a lifelong member and active worker in the United Methodist Church in Scandia where she was famously willing to sponsor the youth group for rowdy teen-agers for many years. She was the Scandia church’s delegate to the Annual Conference for many decades. She belonged to Sorosis Study Club, Chapter BM of PEO, Kansas Republican Women, and a host of other community and philanthropic organizations. For her service, she was named Kansan of the Year in 1991 and received both the Distinguished Service Citation and the Ellsworth Medallion from KU.
Marynell’s lifelong commitment was to government that served the people of Kansas. She was the Republican National Committeewoman from Kansas for many years. During that time, she served on several convention site selection committees, on the Executive Committee, and was vice chairwoman during the turbulent challenges of the Watergate era. She was proud to serve in several important national campaigns, most notably those of Senators Bob Dole and Nancy Kassebaum Baker. She was once quoted as saying that she “never believed that politics is a dirty business–if conducted properly, politics is the business of a free people”.
Above all, Marynell was fiercely devoted to her family. As the mother of four girls, she stimulated, inspired, challenged, and cheered them to undertake careers and life patterns that were far ahead of her time. She truly believed and relentlessly modeled and encouraged her daughters and the many women she touched to seek new heights of achievement and service.
Marynell was a Jayhawk who served her University in many capacities. She was a member of the KU Endowment Association Board of Trustees. She served on numerous boards and campaign committees and hardly ever missed a meeting of any of them.
Marynell was a lot of fun. She loved attending KU athletic events stretching from shortly after World War II until the year of her death. She loved the family’s cabin at Lovewell Lake, where three generations of the family have waterskied endlessly, kept the Kansas beef industry in business, sailed and sunk scoreless water vehicles, lit up the skies with fireworks, and made a lifetime of memories. In a likely gift from God, she spent her last holiday weekend there playing with the newest generation of great grandchildren.
Marynell is survived by her four daughters, Deanell Reece Tacha, Jane Ann Reece Ewy, Saralyn Reece Hardy, and Mary Lou Reece; their husbands John Tacha, Ken Ewy, and Scott Jones; and 14 grandchildren: John Reece Tacha and wife Ryann, David Andrew Tacha and wife Diana, Sarah Tacha Bergman and husband Joel, Leah Tacha Kenealy and husband Sean, Jennifer Jane Davenport and husband Shane Mahoney, Christopher Reece Davenport and partner Clayton Scherf, Casey Ewy and husband Oscar Montenegro, Greg Ewy and wife Sara, Stephen Reece Hardy and wife Kathleen Ryan, William Renfrow Hardy and wife Brooke, Thomas Carl Hardy, Jameson Reece Jones and wife Malena Wiggin, Marynell Taylor Popst and husband Reese, and Arthur Dyatt Jones and wife Rebecca. Great Grandmother Marynell was blessed to welcome 15 great grandchildren in whom she delighted. She is also survived by one cousin, Lynn Dyatt of Colorado Springs, Co.
Just as the fireworks spin skyward and the harvested wheat provides new life, the life of Marynell Dyatt Reece gives energy to our lives. We are confident that she is welcomed into a new and nourishing life where she is no doubt preaching the importance of good government, women’s opportunities, and good Kansas values.
Funeral services will be held at the Scandia United Methodist Church in Scandia, Kansas at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 9. Interment will follow at the Riverview Cemetery, Scandia, KS. Friends may call at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, 324 Kansas Ave, Scandia, KS, from 1 PM until 9 PM on Friday.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Scandia United Methodist Church or the KU Endowment Association for the Spencer Museum of Art.

vet_ffffffcra60706Warren Monroe Craft was born in Edson, Kansas on Thursday June 23, 1932 to Addie (Conarty) and Earl Craft. He was their only child, but had many aunts, uncles, and cousins to grow up with.

When Warren was 3, he moved with his parents to Arkansas to live with his paternal grandparents, while his father traveled as an itinerant farm worker during the Great Depression. Warren learned the important skills of gardening and saving during the “dirty thirties” – skills which would shape his entire life. Warren often visited his Conarty relatives back in Kansas on the 101 Ranch outside of Kanorado.

In 1942 the family moved back to Kansas and settled in Kanorado. There he started 3rd grade and met some lifelong friends and his future wife, Georgia Lea Sprinkle.

In 1945, they opened the Craft Confectionary store on Main Street in Kanorado. Warren discovered he had an after school job, and a weekend job, and a summer vacation job. He learned the value of hard work. The store was a meeting place for the community.

In 1951, Warren graduated high school in May and enlisted in the Army in October instead of waiting to be drafted. The army took him to faraway exotic places, like New Jersey, Germany, and Korea.

Warren was an Infantry Sergeant. He realized he had an opportunity with the army, and worked hard to learn every job. The army taught him to raise the bar of performance. If the army expected a certain thing done to a certain standard, Warren made sure he always did it a little bit better.

It wasn’t always easy for him to make friends, being such a know-it-all, until they needed someone they could count on. And they could count on Warren. One of his specialties was acting as an Advance Observer – locating his own men (and the enemy) on the frontline using 1 coordinate. This special skill got him involved in the battle at Porkchop Hill in Korea. Some of you may have seen the movie. Warren was one of the few to make it off Porkchop Hill with no injuries, and came safely home. He rarely talked about his experiences in the war, but he was proud to serve his country when they needed it.

In 1960 he finally convinced Georgia Lea to marry him. They eloped to Raton, New Mexico on September 12. They lived as newlyweds in Colorado Springs on the military base. Once the kids started arriving, Warren left the army. They had 5 children from 1963 – 1968 (Cinda, Linda, Paul, Catherine, and John). Warren had a plan, and knew if he wanted to raise kids (and he did), he needed a job where he and Georgia could be at home full time. He looked for motels in the little tourist towns in Colorado, and finally settled on the Parkview Motel in Gunnison. He packed up his wife, 5 kids, and mother and drove to Gunnison in his 1954 Chevy Bel-Air in June of 1969.

Now June in Gunnison, Colorado is magnificent. The days are warm and sunny. There is often a short rainstorm in the afternoon – enough so you don’t have to worry about watering your lawn or flowers. With a 6 week growing season, not many people bothered with a garden, but Warren would not let a little thing like that stop him. He grew garlic and horseradish in a small plot behind the motel.

Winter in Gunnison was also magnificent, but very different than winters in western Kansas or Arkansas. That first winter the snow started falling, and it kept falling for 3 days. Warren had all the kids outside with shovels keeping the parking lot and sidewalks clear. By the time they got to the end, the entire thing was covered again. The snowplows would pile all the snow into the middle of the streets. He had wondered why in the world the streets in that small town were so wide – and now he knew.

The kids started school, but having a family business meant that they also had weekend, and after school, and summer vacation jobs. He taught his kids to set the bar high in whatever they did, and to be proud when they accomplished their goals.

In 1978, their family was complete with the birth of their youngest, Elaine. With 6 kids, it was a good thing they had the motel – each kid got their own room in the winter months once they were in high school. In the summers, they frequently all shared a room. It was kind of like summer camp, but with work instead of camp activities.

A favorite time for the entire family was getting a Christmas tree. Warren never seemed too interested in having a tree, but when he saw how much it meant to Georgia and the kids, he made sure he got the license to cut his own tree early. The whole family would pile into the old red station wagon and head up to Pitkin. Warren would drive as far as he could on the road to Tin Cup, then lead a hike up the hill in search of the best tree. There were complaints – frozen toes and fingers, the hike was too far and there was too much snow to walk through. He often shared a story from his army days, saying if anyone in his platoon complained of having to walk, they would be ordered to run. That tended to quiet the complainers (a little).

Once they had selected and cut the perfect tree, Warren tied a rope to the trunk and the kids would all pull it back to the car. Georgia had hot cocoa waiting when they got home, and the family decorated the tree. Then the real fun of Christmas would start – making (and eating) candy, and making the lists for Santa.

One year Warren got a little grouchy at how demanding the kids were, and how much they all wanted for Christmas, so he took over. He was going to be Santa. The family still had to have Santa, since they still had a couple of younger kids. He got everyone a pair of mini-skis. He knew the kids would love them. Having so many kids, skiing wasn’t a sport that the family could afford. They all had ice-skates, but had never gotten to ski. Well, the kids were disappointed at first that they got one thing from Santa – all the same thing! There were tears. Doors got slammed. By the time the sun was bright in the sky, everyone had snow boots and warm coats and gloves, and Warren was strapping on mini-skis. That was another record snowfall year, and the kids skied for months.

In 1978, the Crafts bought the Silver Plume Country Store in Pitkin, Colorado. Pitkin is 30 miles outside of Gunnison, even farther into the mountains. Warren moved his mother into the store (with accommodation on site). Addie’s brothers bought a cabin in town, where they visited for holidays and hunting season. Warren’s uncles, Dave and Tom Conarty, did not always know how to entertain 6 kids (and eventually teenagers), so they bought a snowmobile to keep at the cabin. The snowmobile would keep 2 or 3 of them occupied at any one time, and was a fun toy to have. Many family get-togethers would happen there, most often at Easter, when the weather was normally a bit nicer. Warren’s aunts, uncles, and cousins would come.

In 1987 they sold the Motel and bought a house in town. This was a 2-story, 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom house with a 2 car garage. They had only one child left at home at this time. But as is the case with many families, Warren’s kids would come back home to live for a time, then fly to coop again. The kids were getting to be adults. There were marriages, and in 1987 their first grandchildren were born – twin girls! After that, the family slowly blossomed to include 18 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

In 1999, Warren and Georgia moved to Goodland Kansas to provide support for Warren’s Uncle Tom. They longed to be closer to some of their family. No one lived in Gunnison anymore – they had kids in Grand Junction, Co; Boise, ID; and Salina, KS.

In 2001 their youngest daughter graduated from college and Warren and Georgia moved to Salina. Warren enjoyed tracking local politics and was happy to have a bigger garden. He liked to keep active and walked all over town through all kinds of weather. He enjoyed the milder winters in Salina and got a pool table to enjoy a game with the kids and grandkids when they visited.

Warren enjoyed playing cards and made time to teach his kids and grandkids the joys of cribbage and poker. They fondly remember their grandpa who taught them so many things and spoiled them just a little. He worked the Sudoku puzzle in the paper every day to keep his mind sharp – and his mind was sharp until the very end.

Warren passed away peacefully at home with his wife, Georgia, by his side early on the morning of July 6, 2016 at the age of 84.

No services are planned. Memorials may be made to Kanorado Senior Center or Kanorado Museum, both in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401.

Darrell was almost 7 when his sister Darline was born and in 1931, the family moved to Section 21-10-19 which was four miles south of Zurich. Both farmsteads were owned by the Sutor brothers.

Darrell graduated from Palco High School in Placo, Kansas with the Class of 1938 and went on to attend Fort Hays State College for one year. The Sutor brother’s estate sale took place in 1938 where Darrell’s father purchased the main ranch headquarters. The family moved to the ranch and Sutor Hereford Farms was born. On May 14, 1943 Darrell was united in marriage to Joy Jennings in Plainville, out in the yard of his uncle Rev. A.W. Dick, who officiated the ceremony. Darrell and Joy then made their home ½ mile north of the ranch on Section 12-10-20.

At the start of World War II, Darrell went at least twice to Stockton, Kansas to get his physical and was sent home both times by the doctor, because a few boys needed to stay in order to help feed those that went. During that time, with the shortage of men at home, German Prisoners of War were hired to work in rural areas that posed minimal security risk. So it was that a large crew of POW’s came to build the sale barn on the ranch headquarters.

To say that cattle ranching was their life would be an understatement. After the war, Linda, Darla and Lorna were born as the ranch continued to expand. As newlyweds Darrell and Joy went by boxcar to Bellville, Kansas to the Republic County Fair with the show cattle. Joy didn’t much care for riding with the cattle so she didn’t go again. In 1961 Kansas Senators Bob Dole and Harry Darby, along with Kansas Governor John Anderson, Jr. all attended the much celebrated Centennial Sale with a large party held in the ranch house when the sale was over. In 1966 the Champion Hereford Bull, in the newly built Houston Astrodome, was none other than SHF True Onward 44. Through the Hereford business, Darrell knew people from all over the country.

Darrell was a lifetime member of the American Hereford Association, the Kansas Hereford Association and the Kansas Livestock Association even serving as President of the KHA in 1963. He served on the Western Cooperative Board for forty years, the Pleasant View Cemetery Board for many years, was a long time Board Member of the Rooks County Free Fair, and was active in both the Plainville and Palco United Methodist Churches.

Darrell is survived by daughters Linda Sutor of Smolan, Darla Moore and husband Charlie of Modoc, and Lorna Pelton of Palco; grandchildren Jessica Hall and husband Kelly, Heather Renier and husband Dan, Dana Pieper and husband David, Kevin Moore, Shellie Collins and husband Colby, and Chan Pelton and wife Amanda; 12 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; and one sister-in-law.

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Eliza Sutor, wife of 71 years Joy, step-mother Luella Sutor, sister Darline Marcotte, sister-in-law Alberta Stull, and three brothers-in-law Harold Marcotte, Max Stull, and Clive Felderman.

It has been said the Cattleman’s Motto is: “If it’s not yours, don’t take it. If it’s not true, don’t say it. If it’s not right, don’t do it.” Darrell lived every day of his life, teaching us by example, how to work hard and be thankful for what we have, and how to love one another through everything we say and do. Not just because it’s right, but because it’s the only way a true cattleman should live.
