Dora A. (Criswell) Quathamer, 75, of Salina, passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2016. She was born April 13, 1941 in Odense, KS.

Dora worked for 30 years as an RN around the Wamego and Alma area.

Dora met the love of her life; Geard D. Quathamer and were married July 17, 1966 in Humboldt, KS. Out of this union came four children whomDora loved and adored; Geard J., Jane, Tina and Jennifer.

Dora instilled in her children the same moral and integrity code as she was raised. She was raised to have the courage of a lion, but with the gentleness of a teddy bear. She was known to be outspoken to the public, but gentle within her family. Within the confines of her home and family,Dora was known as “a spit fire.” She was not only known for her ability to raise a vegetable garden, but her ability to can and preserve that same garden every year. Which went hand in hand with Dora’s ability and talent to make and bake things from scratch, never store bought, and again, continued to install these same values to her children. Of all the things that Dora will be remembered most for is how very family oriented she was and how very much she loved each and every one of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Again, installing in her children these old fashioned, gentle morals.

Dora’s love and passion for animals is another endearing memory in each of her children’s memories. Sharing one particular memory where Dorawas driving along and observed someone throwing a “bag” out of a car.Dora stopped and looked inside the bag to discover four (4) baby puppies. Three of the puppies passed away, but Dora continued to hand feed the lone puppy remaining.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Thelma (Keyser) Criswell; grandson, Jaustin Riley, sister, Dr. Mildred Criswell; and brothers, Allen and Walter Criswell.

Survivors include her loving husband of 50 plus years; Geard D.Quathamer, who is known to frequently refer to Dora as “The Mrs.”; of the home, son; Geard J. Stinchcombpaperpicvet_ffffffDr. Charles Lowell Stinchcomb, 70, of Russell, Kansas,
passed away Monday morning, August 15, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer at his home with his family by his side.

Charles was born January 24, 1946 in Marion County, Kansas to Charles F. and Rosalene (Higgins) Stinchcomb.  On June 12, 1966, he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Barbara Ann Weber, and together they had two children, Angela and Jason.

Charles served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve from 1964 until 1985.  He achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  He was a Distinguished Military Graduate of the U.S. Army Artillery and Missile School, Ft. Sill.  Attended the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth.  He was deployed to Vietnam and received the Bronze Star.  He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post #6240 and the American Legion William Roe Post.

Charles was the first person in his family to go to college and graduated from Kansas State University in 1975 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.  He moved his family to Russell in 1976, and together with his wife Barbara, opened Town and Country Animal Hospital.

For more than 30 years, Charles served as a beloved country veterinarian who cared for both small and large animals.  He traveled country roads in inclement weather and was always available after hours to help animals in need, offering compassion and comfort to their owners too.  Along the way, he developed strong friendships with those who admired his integrity, hard work and kindness.

Charles was a natural leader with a strong desire to make a difference in Russell and his profession.  He served as the co-chairman of the 2001 Prairiesta and helped found the Sunrise Kiwanis Club.  He was active in St. John Lutheran Church, a member of the USD 407 Board of Education, and Russell County Citizen of the Year.  Charles was appointed in 1998 to the Kansas Board of Veterinary Examiners by Gov. Bill Graves.  He was a pioneer in the Kansas Veterinary Medical Association (KVMA) and elected president in 2005 and 2006.  He was honored as Kansas Veterinarian of the Year and received the KVMA’s lifetime achievement award.  He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Charles enjoyed flying and had a private pilot’s license.  He liked to fly his airplane simply for the pleasure of soaring through the sky and often would fly across Wilson Lake to enjoy the view.  He served as President of the Russell Airport Advisory Board.

Charles took special delight helping children.  For 13 years, he helped coach summer recreational baseball.  In the 1980’s, he coached his son Jason and other young boys on the Shields baseball team to an undefeated season.  He was a Boy Scout Master, Cub Scout Master, and led a trip of young leaders to Philmont Scout Camp.  He was very proud that his son would later become an Eagle Scout.  Charles also served as the Russell County 4-H Veterinary Science Leader.  Throughout his life, he mentored numerous young adults who would later go on to become veterinarians and veterinary assistants in their own right.

Recently, Charles began writing charming children’s books that imparted lessons about living an exemplary life.  The books featured his grandchildren as the main characters and were illustrated by young artists.  They include a Tale about Santa, the Reindeer and Christmas, The Great Frog Race, the Daring Rescue of the Pirate Princess, and Field Manual for Success.  He enjoyed dressing up as Santa Claus at Christmastime and amusing children with his stories.
In his later years, Charles enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow.  He proudly watched soccer, baseball and
basketball games, and quietly coached kids on things they might do better.  He enjoyed teaching his grandchildren about the great outdoors, how to hunt for frogs, the art of fishing, and the magic of the wild world around them.  He instilled in them his secret to being successful which was to live your life by the Three D’s – Desire, Dedication and Determination.

He left this world a person who touched many lives and who will be remembered for his generosity, kindness, and leadership.  In his final days, he shared that he always strove to live by the words of Sister Mary Rose
McGeady, “There is no greater joy nor greater reward than to make a fundamental difference in someone’s life.”

Surviving family include his wife of 50 years, Barbara of the home; daughter, Angela Muller (Kai) of Russell, Kansas; son, Lt. Col. Jason Stinchcomb (Tricia) of Carrollton, Virginia; four grandchildren, Diego, Edwin, Jenna and Charles H.; father, Charles F. Stinchcomb of Marion, Kansas; sister Sue Mueller (Richard) of Mentor, Kansas; brothers, Blaine Stinchcomb of Marion, Kansas and Mike Stinchcomb (Emma) of Solomon, Kansas; and many beloved nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by
his mother; sister Charlene and brother Robert.

Celebration of Dr. Charles L. Stinchcomb’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, August 18, 2016 at St. John Lutheran Church of Russell.  Military Rites will be conducted by the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Honor Guard.  A private family burial of ashes will take place at Claney Cemetery in Marion, Kansas.  Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.  The family request Memorial donations to be made to Dr. Charles and Barbara Stinchcomb Fund at the Russell County Area Community Foundation.  Condolences and contributions may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Thumbnail (1)Edward Claude Olden passed away Wednesday August 10, 2016 at his home in Hays, Kansas. He was born February 9, 1980 in Denver, Colorado, to Claude Edward Olden and Kathleen Odella Wellington. He was one of 19 children.

Ed began his school years in Hill City, Kansas, beginning with kindergarten and graduating with the Hill City High School Class of 1999. Ed made friends quickly and as teachers recall was a willing student who practiced following the rules. He could always be seen in the middle of a rag-tag playground football game during recess. He grew up loving football.

Wray Petrie, Ed’s grandmother raised him to manhood. She and Ed were especially close. He always enjoyed spending time with family. He was the Brother Bear to his cherished sister, Jamie, and his other siblings as well. He was a man of faith and had an essential relationship with Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Throughout his childhood and teenage years, Big Ed loved sports and avidly participated in football, wrestling, and track both at Longfellow Middle School and HHS. He was greatly inspired by the athlete his father was, and football soon became his favorite sport. Ed had a successful football career at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas. If you spent even a short time with Ed, you knew he was a die-hard Denver Broncos fan.

Big Ed (as he was lovingly called) never met a stranger. Wherever he went, he seemed to know everyone and became instant friends with all. He had a heart of gold and was always looking out for other people. His six year employment with Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas was very important to him. He sincerely enjoyed caring for people. He was a sort of “super hero” to many. Before Ed’s untimely death, Ed had begun making future plans to establish a Youth Boys’ Home, to be named Hands of Strength, Inc. Maybe that is why he enjoyed superhero movies. If there was one playing at the local theatre, you would find Ed buying a ticket or two, as he often took his nephew, Davian, to catch the show.

He was preceded in death by his adored father, Claude Edward Olden, and his beloved grandmother, Wray Petrie.

Ed leaves behind to mourn, seven brothers: Rodger Swanson, Ali Swanson, Claude E. Olden, Jr., Isaiah Claypool, Xavier Claypool, Dominique Brown, and Quintin Brown; sisters: Jamie Alexander, Linda Olden, Sherry Olden, Brenda A. Olden, Angela Cassidy, Tamara D. Wilson, Sarah M. Olden, Tawanna Olden, Trashasans Graves (Renaldo), Miasha Brown, and Nikolya Brown: a large extended family and many friends.

Those who had the privilege of knowing Ed will remember his unselfish heart, his contagious smile, and gentle kindness. Ed, you are dearly loved and missed, but we are at peace knowing that you are smiling down on us from your heavenly home.

Loren graduated from Linn High School in 1941. He served with the Merchant Marines from 1944 until 1946, hauling military supplies, primarily in the Pacific area. One trip took him around the world, starting from California, to the Philippines, Singapore, India, through the Red Sea and Suez Canal. The ship then traveled the Mediterranean through the Rock of Gibraltar, back to New York.

Since the war had ended and the demand for such seamen dropped quickly, Loren returned home. The Merchant Marines, at that time, was not considered military, so he was subject to the draft. Loren enlisted in the Army and served nearly two years in the Philippines as a military policeman.

Following the war, Loren farmed with his father and worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation. He was a member of the American Legion.

His parents and brother, Raymond Lange, preceded him in death.

Survivors include nephew, John Lange, New York; and nieces, Linda Metz, Texas and Deborah Lange, Ohio.

A memorial fund has been established to the Palmer Café. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, Washington.

Thumbnail (2)vet_ffffffGail Leon McComb passed away Sunday, August 21, 2016 at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 87. He was born on November 12, 1928 in the home of his late parents, Leon and Florence (Proeger) McComb, in Stockton, Kansas. Growing up during the Great Depression, in 1934 the family moved to the McComb farm near Igo, Kansas southwest of present day Woodston. He attended the Igo and Survey country schools before graduating Magna Cum Laude from Stockton High School with the Class of 1946.

Gail grew up farming and ranching, raising cattle and horses, and helping to drive herds sometimes up to 20 miles or more. By 1948 he began competing in rodeos and renting livestock to them. This eventually led to the formation of Leon McComb and Sons Rodeo which was a livestock contracting and rodeo producing company in Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska until 1972. On May 17, 1952 he was united in marriage to Donna Nadine Miller from Alton, Kansas. They were blessed with three daughters, Kathryn Gail, Michele Lee, and Melanie Ann. Together they raised their family on a rented farm southeast of Stockton until moving to town in 1972 when he was elected sheriff.

Gail served as Rooks County Sheriff for two years and the Stockton Police Department for three more years. From 1978 until 1991, he was a licensed real estate agent and also served on the Stockton City Council from 1993 to 1998. During most of those years he worked at area sale barns sorting, moving, and weighing cattle and served as Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the Open Class Horse show at the Rooks County Free Fair. All this time, he kept his own herd of cattle until his retirement in 1995.

After retiring, Gail and Donna spent time traveling together and taking bus tours. He was able to pursue his passion for history and family genealogy, as well as writing numerous articles for the Kansas Cowboy, Stockton Sentinel, and the Solomon Valley Highway 24 Heritage Alliance. Although one of the greatest honors of his life was being inducted into the Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame in Dodge City in 2011, his greatest love was his wife, family and friends. He enjoyed the coffee group talks, attending his grandchildren’s events, and taking care of Donna in their later years together.

Gail is survived by his wife Donna; daughters Kathy Rees and husband Howard of Dodge City, Michele Kee of Stockton, and Melanie Hoch and husband Charlie of Topeka; grandchildren Brandi Kee of Salina, Brian Kee of Assaria, Brianne (Jez) Rush, of Stockton, Brooke Clayton of Stockton, Andy (Erin) Rees of Arvada, CO, and Kinsey (Jake) Bruton of Gunnison, CO; thirteen great grandchildren; and sister-in-law Gwen Brown of Stockton.
He was preceded in death by his parents Leon and Florence McComb, and brother Keith McComb.

Gail spent his life working to take care of what was entrusted to him and loving the people who were closest to him. The lifeblood of the McComb family was found in the rolling hills of grass and the freedom of country life that gave strength and encouragement to his heart and spirit. For those left to cherish his memory, we will be forever grateful for the time we shared together and the memories we hold so dear.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 25, 2016 at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home with burial to follow in Survey Cemetery near Woodston. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Thumbnailvet_ffffffLaurence LeRoy Hull went to be with his Lord on August 27, 2016, at his home in Woodston, Kansas at the age 91. He was born on January 19, 1925 to the late Downer and Elsie (Thomas) Hull on the family farm just northeast of Woodston. He attended his first seven years of grade school at the Spring Branch country school until its closing when he began attending school in Woodston, where he graduated high school with the Class of 1942. After graduation he attended Fort Hays State College for one year before being drafted into the United States Army during World War II.

After being discharged from the Army in the spring of 1946, Laurence was united in marriage to Marvel Stanfield on August 22, 1946. Together they attended Fort Hays State and both of them graduated in January of 1950. He majored in Music Education and taught music in the Alton and Woodston, Kansas schools, and later in the Arkansas City, Kansas senior high school and junior college. After four years of teaching, he returned to what he knew and loved most – farming. It was a joy and an honor to him to be farming the same ground that his great-grandfather had homesteaded in 1878.

Laurence had a beautiful tenor voice and was often called upon to sing solos at church, community functions, and funerals up until a year ago. He loved to read, and he loved to tinker. He could repair nearly anything that was broken. He loved spending time with his family, especially family dinners, and camping in the Rocky Mountains. He was a member of the Woodston United Methodist church, and served on the Stockton School Board and Rooks County Conservation Board for many years.

Marvel and Laurence moved to their present home in Woodston back in 1957. It was here they raised their three children, Elizabeth, Cynthia, and Downer. Earlier this month they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with their family at home.

He was preceded in death by his parents Downer and Elsie Hull, daughter Cynthia Sarian, son-in-law Ron Marcotte, and siblings Frances VanGundy, Lucille Stanfield, and Lee Hull.

Laurence was a man of strong faith, abiding hope, and deep love for God, his wife, his family, and his farm. Although we will miss him greatly for now, we take comfort knowing that today he is with Jesus, and those who went before him. Our hearts rejoice because we look forward with anticipation to the day we shall all be reunited in Heaven.

Joseph Pate.jpegvet_ffffffJoseph E. “Joe” Pate, Jr., 87, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away surrounded by his family at 5:40 PM, Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at the McPherson Hospital.

Joe was born February 20, 1929 at Independence, Kansas to Joseph Earl Pate, Sr. and Effie Mae (Snyder) Pate. He grew up and attended grade school in Independence and graduated from the Independence High School in 1947. Joe then attended the Independence Junior College where he played football. In 1949, Joe began attending the McPherson College where he was an all-conference football player. He graduated from McPherson with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. He later continued his education and received a Master of Science degree in education from the Fort Hays State University.

Joe was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Ball on June 30, 1951. Their wedding was held at 6:00 am since Mary thought that was the most beautiful time of the day! Joe and Mary were blessed with four children, T.J., Lee, Beth and Joy. Joe and Mary celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary on June 30th of this year.

One month after their wedding, Joe entered the United States Army, serving in the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, Joe began his teaching career at Randall, Kansas. Later, he taught and coached sports at the Esbon High School, then the Phillipsburg Junior High School and became the Superintendent of Schools at Bird City, Kansas. In 1967, Joe and his family moved to Clearwater, Kansas where Joe was the principal of the elementary and middle school. Joe retired from the educational field in 1989 after serving for over 35 years.

In 1990, Joe and Mary moved to their current home in McPherson, Kansas. Always being a “real people person”, Joe began his second career as a stocker and carry-out person at the Dillon’s grocery in McPherson. He continued working there for 23 years and finally retired the second time.

Joe and Mary were devoted Christians. Joe’s spiritual walk began when, as a young boy, living in Independence he was invited to Sunday School by a neighbor. Joe gave his life to Christ as a young boy and began to faithfully walk with Jesus. Through the years, Joe became more devoted in his walk with Jesus and exhibited that by his faithful leadership, commitment and membership to the local churches where they lived. Joe and Mary were an integral part of the Clearwater Church of the Nazarene followed by many years of faithful service at the McPherson Church of the Nazarene. Joe and Mary were recognized by the General Church of the Nazarene on two occasions, when they were given the Distinguished Service Award for their consistent servant hearts, both in the churches and the communities in which they served.

Joe loved working in his yard and building and maintaining the landscaping areas of their home. He also loved working on and repairing all kinds of antiques, along with making toys for their grandchildren. Joe was a real family man. If anyone ever asked Joe if he loved his family, his response was a resounding, “You Betcha!” One of the best things Joe ever did was to end his prayers asking God to “be with our big ones and little ones.”

Joe Pate was known throughout his teaching career as “Mr. Pate”, however after moving to McPherson, he was just known as “Joe.” However, as his family grew, his grandkids called him “Papa”.

Joe is survived by: His loving wife, Mary of the home. One Son, Lee Pate and his wife, Jann of Newport, Oregon. Two Daughters, Beth Norman and her husband, Stan of Abilene, Kansas and Joy Hoffman and her husband, Marlan of Parsons, Kansas; Eight Grandchildren: Joseph Charles, “J.C.” Norman and his wife, Melissa; Erica (Hoffman) Shrout and her husband, Nathan; Kendra Norman, Lynn Hoffman and his wife, Melissa; Bryce Norman; Aaron Hoffman; Carter Pate and Carson Pate. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his oldest son, T.J. who died in 1959, as well as five brothers, James, Raymond, Carl, Bobby and Ronnie Pate.

The family will receive friends at the Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home from 5 to 7 PM, Friday.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, September 3, 2016 at the Church of the Nazarene in McPherson.

ThumbnailWilma Artille (Breckenridge) Bartholomew passed away Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Kenwood View Health and Rehabilitation Center in Salina, Kansas due to complications from ovarian cancer, which she had fought for almost a year, at the age of 96. She was born on December 30, 1919 on the family farm southwest of Woodston, Kansas to the late Gorden and Edna (Grimes) Breckenridge. She grew up on the farm southeast of Woodston and attended Rose Hill country school from 1926 – 1933, taking 3rd and 4th grade studies in the same year. She then spent her first three years of high school in Woodston, living with her grandparents Cliff and Alice Grimes during the winter months, until her family moved to Pittsburg, Kansas where she graduated from College High School.

Wilma’s parents moved to Pittsburg where her father found work in the iron foundry and operated a small farm so the girls could go to college, an opportunity he never had. Wilma graduated from Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg (now Pittsburg State University) in 1939, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Vocational Home Economics and a minor in English and Science. She began teaching school in Louisburg and Paola schools in Miami County, Kansas and became engaged to Kenneth Bartholomew before he joined the United States Army Air Corps during WWII. Before his discharge from the service, she returned home and began teaching at Woodston Rural High School. On March 8, 1946 she and Kenneth were united in marriage and lived in rural Osborne County, Kansas near his family farm. They were blessed with four children, Ruth, Patsy, Ray, and John.

Wilma was a teacher at heart. She did extended substitute teaching in Alton, and later became a full-time teacher in Woodston teaching a variety of classes and subjects, including the elementary school whenever needed. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and served as president and in several district offices within the Conference of the UMW. She was a 4-H leader for many years and enjoyed judging food projects at the county fairs. She was a tutor for Volunteers for Literacy with a passion for helping people learn to read, and in later years continued to be a Sunday School teacher, was a member of the Alton American Legion Auxiliary, and stayed active in the community, helping with all of the local events.

During the last 15 months of her life, Wilma lived with her daughter and son-in-law Patsy and Galen Redden near Gypsum, Kansas. She continued to do activities that were reported in her column, “Wilma’s Outings” in the Woodston Free Press, and during the Summer of 2015 she went on an extended trip to Wyoming and Idaho to attend the Bartholomew Family Reunion. The highlight of the trip was fulfilling her dream of seeing “old Faithful” in Yellowstone National Park.

Wilma is survived by her children Patsy L. Redden and husband Galen of Gypsum, Ray E. Bartholomew and wife Candy of Hutchinson, and John W. Bartholomew of Los Lunas, NM; son-in-law Troy Zachary of Salina; sisters Elma Auchard of Bryan, OH, and Grace Merkey and husband Robert “Bob” of Monte Vista, CO; grandchildren LeeAnn and Travis Carlson, Sam and Lori Zachary, Daniel and Andrea Zachary, Heidi and Chad Crist, Trevor and Gayle Redden, Arlen and Hayley Redden, Elina and Tyler Charvet, Casey Bartholomew, Corey and Julie Bartholomew, Kayla Bartholomew, Brianna Bartholomew, and Marisa Bartholomew; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Gorden and Edna Breckenridge, husband Kenneth Bartholomew, brother-in-law Edward Auchard, and daughter Ruth Ann Zachary

It has been said that teachers are the greatest of all artists because their medium is the hearts, minds, and spirits of our children. The artistry Wilma leaves with us is a beautiful work made up of the thousands of lives she has touched and the difference she has made in our world because she was a faithful and loving wife, mother, friend, and teacher. She will live for generations to come in the hearts and minds of all who were blessed to know her.

Funeral Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2016 at Woodston United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 2:00pm-8:00pm at the funeral home, with family receiving friends from 6:00-7:30pm.
