Obituaries 23 January, 2015

LINCOLN, Neb. — Betty Marie (Lewis) Warta was born Jan. 4, 1921, on her family’s farmstead near Bavaria, Kan. She died peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015, in Lincoln. She was 94 years old.

Betty married Lawrence C. Warta on June 8, 1947. They lived in Salina, Kan., and raised two daughters, Ruth Elaine Warta and Carol Sue Coughlin, both now of Lincoln. Lawrence and Betty owned and operated Warta Buick in Salina.

Betty’s parents were Bruce and Ida (Seusy) Lewis, of Bavaria. Betty attended Bavaria schools and Southwest College, in Winfield, Kan. She taught high school in Beverly, Alta Vista and Brookville, Kan.

Betty was preceded in death by Lawrence (1987), an infant son, Bruce Charles Warta, and her parents. She is survived by her daughters, Ruth and Carol Sue; three grandchildren, Brian, Bradley and Jenna Coughlin; six great-grandchildren; her sister, Marilyn (Kenneth) Will; and extended relations in the Lewis, Seusy and Warta families.

In addition to teaching, Betty served as the primary accountant for Warta Buick. She and Lawrence attended Village Bible Church in Salina and belonged to Salina Country Club. Betty enjoyed her piano music, crocheting, growing roses, reading and doing crosswords.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.- noon Saturday, Jan. 24, with family greeting friends from 10-11:30 a.m., at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina, 67401. Private memorial Celebration of Life services for Betty will follow. Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery, Salina.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family, to be distributed according to Betty’s wishes.

Jennie L. Shublom , 76, of Salina, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2015. She was born Sept. 8, 1938, in Salina, the daughter of Dr. Donald and Berta (Wilhelmy) Anderson.

Jennie attended schools in Salina, Fremont, Neb., and Marburg, Germany, and graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Jennie provided social work services for Saline County, Riley County and Reno County welfare departments. She started the social work department at Asbury/Salina Regional Health Center in 1970 and served as director for many years, until her retirement in 2001.

Jennie was instrumental in starting the Hotline Crisis program in Salina, she was board member of Central Kansas Foundation, and member and Sunday school teacher at St. John’s Lutheran Church. She was a member of numerous social work organizations, welfare associations and crisis hotline boards. She was also a member of Farm Wives of America, National Hot Rod Association, Sports Car Club of America and Bethany College Booster Club. She was a huge K-State fan. Her favorite job was being a farm wife.

Jennie was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Donald “Toc” Anderson.

She is survived by her husband, Herman; daughter, Polly Adams Matherly (Kevin); grandchildren, Kolton and Madison Matherly; and brother-in-law, Edward Shublom.

Visitation will be from 4-8 this evening, Jan. 23, with family greeting visitors from 5-7, at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth St., Salina 67401. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, with burial in Smolan Cemetery. Memorials are to the church or the Salina Animal Shelter.
