vet_ffffffboy60228Calvin Kendall Boyce, 90, of Salina, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016. He was born in Salina on May 23, 1925, the son of George and Melba (Davis) Boyce, and raised in Salina. Following the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Calvin joined the U.S. Navy and set sail to Pearl Harbor aboard USS Waterman DE740.

After training, DE740 participated in the Marianas and Philippine Island operations surviving battle in The Pacific War and infamous Typhoon Cobra. DE740 then rescued allied POW’s after Surrender Declaration was signed by Empire of Japan.

Calvin then retuned to civilian life and was married to Gladys Fate November 26, 1949. Calvin joined the VFW and was a lifetime member for 70 years and past VFW Post 1432 commander. He retired from First State Bank Salina and Gage Finance.

He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Melba J. Gage (Burford) and father George O. Boyce.

He is survived by spouse Gladys; daughters Pamela (Alf Tiemeyer), Debra (John Young); son Scott (Julie); grand children, Jennifer Schroeder (Michael), Amy Tiemeyer, John Tiemeyer (Chelsey), Evan and Becca Young, Josh Coup(Anna), Tyler Boyce and 6 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, March 3, at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at First United Methodist Church, 122 N. Eighth, Salina, the Rev. Eric D. Rook officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park with Military Honors provided by VFW Post 1432.

Memorials may be made to VFW Post 1432 or First United Methodist Church, Salina.

Larry D. Trent Sr., 59, won his battle over cancer on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016. He was born July, 27, 1956, in Hutchinson to Arvin and Joyce Trent, of Salina. They survive.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, March 5, at 11 a.m. at Ray Avenue Baptist Church, 2801 E. Ray Ave. in Salina.

In lieu of flowers, Larry would be happy knowing contributions were going to Ray Avenue Baptist Church in his memory. He often expressed his wish that he could support the church he loved and where he met Christ “thanks to cancer.”

Survivors include sisters. Pam Trent Smith (B.J.), of Little River, and Gayle Trent Miller, of Holcomb.

GYPSUM — Jacqueline Pearl Gilbert, 65, of Gypsum, passed away Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016. She was born in Lindsborg to Rufus and Rozina (Hubele) Base.

Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Stuart Base.

She is survived by her husband, Jim Gilbert; nieces, Sandi Slaughter and Lisa Base; and numerous loving relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 4, with a visitation starting at 10:30 a.m., all at First Baptist Church, Gypsum.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Gypsum or Kansas Bible Camp of Hutchinson.

HERINGTON – Dennis D. Ryff, 59, Dennis Dean Ryff, of Ramona, departed this life, Monday, Feb. 29th, 2016, at Wichita. He was born on May 3rd, 1956, at Salina, the son of George H. and Rosetta A. (Kandt) Ryff.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, Mar. 4th, 2016, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Herington, with Pastor Bill Peterson, officiating. Burial will follow at the Lewis Cemetery of Ramona.  Calling time will be from 6:00 – 8:00pm, Thursday, at Zeiner Funeral Home-Herington Chapel.

Mr. Ryff took a medical retirement three years ago from (API) Agri Producers.  Earlier in his career he worked at Vogt Standard Service Station and Cardie Oil Company.  He was a Boy Scout leader.  He graduated from Herington High School with the class of 1974.  He attended Hope Grade School.  He was baptized at Ebenezer Baptist Church.  He is preceded in death by his parents.

He married Donita Campbell on December 27th, 1974, at Herington, and she survives of the home rural Ramona. He is survived by a son Tracy Ryff (wife-Gina) of White City; two daughters Miranda Ryff of Topeka, Alyssa Huggins of El Dorado; 3 brothers Larry Ryff (wife-Terry) of Hope, Phil Ryff of Ramona, Tim Ryff of Elmo; a sister Diane Schultz (husband-Fred) of Great Bend; five grandchildren: Brett, Payton, Madison, Kobe, and Darius.

The family requests memorials to Donor’s Choice; and they may be sent in care of the Zeiner Funeral Home, Herington Chapel, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, KS, 67449-3038.

Larry Lee Choitz, 53, passed away February 29, 2016 at his home in rural Ellsworth County. He was born August 21, 1962 in Ellsworth to Erma J. (Wehrenberg) and Lawrence C. Choitz.

A lifetime resident of Ellsworth County, Larry was a farmer and stockman and was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ellsworth. He worked at A-1 Welding for over 20 years while farming in a partnership with his father.

Larry is survived by his parents, Lawrence and Erma Choitz of Ellsworth; sister, Mary Meier (Randy) of Lincoln; brother, Bob Choitz (Megan) of Ellsworth; and 1 niece and 2 nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Rita K. Choitz.

Visitation: 1-8 p.m., Friday, March 4, 2016 at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth, with family present from 5-7 p.m.

Funeral service: 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 5, 2016 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ellsworth with burial following in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery.
